Baby Shrimp by Maskrosen

[raw]
made by Maskrosen for LD 41 (JAM)

Have you ever dreamt of having a pet baby shrimp? You said yes, didn’t you? Well, today is your lucky day! Take care of your new-found best buddy by feeding him and handing him his favourite toy. As we all know baby shrimps poops a lot, so don’t forget to keep the water nice and clean. But be careful not to make him exhausted from all the playing, too full or poison the water. Your friendship may not survive that. Also the baby shrimp will die.

Baby Shrimp is a virtual pet game combined with match three. Match three symbols to get the item your pet baby shrimp needs and keep the meters green. The difficulty increases over time so don’t sleep on it. Happy gaming!

baby-shrimp_poster.png

How to play: Click on one of the symbols on the board and then click on another adjacent one to swap them. The swap only goes through if it would create a match of 3 or more of the same symbols vertically or horizontally. Match the symbols shown in the meters to keep the meters from going down too far. Just be careful to not fill them up too much.

This is our first time doing a Ludum Dare and we had so much fun! Next up we would like to add sound and polish the animations and game feel. Let us know what you think in the comments 🙂

Known bug: if there are no more moves you're stuck and you will lose when the meters go down.

This has to be one of the cutest thing I've seen on this ludum dare haha! I love the concept, simple but works really well. Some music and sound effects would've definitely make it better but nevertheless it's a great game. Well done! Now I need a baby shrimp in my life.

I love the artwork, but I can't manage to play the game. Can you please provide a short description on how to play?

@FrauKauz Hi thanks for your comment, just click on one of the pieces on the board and click on another and they will swap if that would create a match of 3 or more of the same symbol. Apologies for not having any user feedback for showing which piece is selected.

Ahh okay, now I get it. I haven't played a Match Three game yet, which makes me now feel a bit embarassed :D. It's a fun game and I enjoy it! Well done :)

I love it! It's super good and a great combo of the two ideas. The art reminds of something I'd play on a phone or tablet, and if it was on mobile, it'd be super cute and addicting!

Good game, you should update the game description with the controls for the game, I was a bit confused at first :-)

What a game, for a first jam! The arts are great, the idea is fun, and the realisation is working - even if some kind of feedback when clicking tiles would have been more player friendly. But well done, and I will follow your future LD's with attention :D

I like shrimps. And this one was extra cute.

According to the files, I assume that you used Java to make this game. Did you use JavaFX or a game framework? Just curious because I also used Java for my game.

@Bros. Yes, we used a framework called libgdx. It is a Java framework for making games for desktop and mobile devices

Nice little game. Kinda challenging to be honest. It was really hard for me to keep an eye on the needs and the "gems" in the same time. But I'm also a noob, so... It was fun though. There are just two details I would change: 1) Some kind of animation of the gems would be nice for better coordination during the gameplay. 2) Music or at least some sound effects would come a long way :)

awwww, Cute Pet, the most important part of a pet sim. Since it requires two clicks to move it be nice if I had a highlight or something for my first click.
I haven't seen a game requiring the JRE in awhile and like to use gamejams for new tech. I hadn't heard of libgdx, seems cool.

It's hard to take care of a baby shrimp :) The title took my attention and it's a nice game with a really cute shrimp. Great job with the art. It would be great if you can add some music. I like that when things go wrong the face expression changes. A solid and entertaining game mechanim. As an improvement i think that some visual feedback when a symbol is selected would be nice

Nice combination of genres. You've created a cute looking atmosphere and I like how polished the game actually looks. With our game for example, we did the UI really quick, while yours seems to fit really well with the game. It's a simple yet entertaining gameplay. Would love to hear if you had any more features planned or other sea creatures in your mind. Thanks for checking out my game as well :)

Cute game! I liked how the shrimp changes expression, but I had hardly time to look at it, since it's quite stressful to care for a baby shrimp. ;) Cool that you can also have to much of something!

I would have liked a visual indicator that I selected an item. Furthermore, I twice missed my score because I accidently clicked too fast and started again - a personal highscore would be nice. I got till 354 later on. :)

Overall, well done! :shrimp: Congrats with your first LD game.

Well match 3 is match 3, I think the combination of that with a kind of virtual pet thing has got a lot of potential, not sure if there are any popular games that do it already, but if not then you should polish it up and get it out there ASAP, you would probably make a fortune. For me the main thing missing is just juiciness, I want to see nice animations when you match 3 things, even more cute expressions from the baby shrimp, sound fx etc. etc. Basically all the usual stuff as covered in e.g https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fy0aCDmgnxg. The artwork is really good though. Overall Pretty solid, congrats on your first LD.
