SnakeTD by Klerembot

[raw]
made by Klerembot for LD 41 (JAM)

Snake Tower Defense, something you didn't even know you need. Until now. This game builds on the mechanic that you are playing regular game of Snake, while you have turrets on each of your body parts. With these you have to protect both yourself (smashing head first into something kills you, if you have no remaining body parts) AND a core. If you smash into something, you release one body part, which will now be a stationary turret and an obstacle.

Controls: WASD/Arrow keys: movement

For real though, this is actually my first jam, and that together with not enough time is a recipe for not good game. Still, I've enjoyed making this little thing and I've learned quite a bit.

EDIT: There seems to be problems with loading the game. It is usually solved by refreshing the page.

Yeah I think the game needed a little bit more time. BUT, that said, you have a pretty solid foundation here. Mechanics for placing turrents is interesting (would have preferred a button instead of hitting into a wall, as it becomes quite hard to place turrents then quickly move before the wall kills you), and it played fairly well.

For some reason I had to refresh the screen before it would load, and every time I died the screen seemed to keep zooming in, but apart from that it was all good.

I really like this take on snake. Could use some more polish, but the basic idea is amazing, and is already pretty fun as is.

That's an original mashup ! The game lacks some "fluidity", but it's fun and it have a good feeling of progression. Congrats for your first jam, hope you'll be at the next one !

Took forever to get the first kill... That said I played it a couple of times so there is definitely something there :)

It's a really cool idea and is pretty fun to play! I agree that it could be better with a tad more polish (all of ours can :P), but overall it was quite a nice game. Good job!

The idea is interesting and it can definetely have some future! Something to do with the towers, maybe upgrades, since the snake is fairly slow and there's time for that. And it needs some technical polish :)

Interesting, but I got bored far, far before it got challenging. Ramming my head into a wall to release a turret is a very... unusual method. I didn't like it.

Due to everything moving along the grid it felt bad. Having smooth motion would make it feel a lot better.

Very fun idea! I think the difficulty needs to be smoothed out a bit and if there was more defined spawn points for enemies, but I'd like to see a post jam update to this. Also I dig that funky beat.

Very smooth combination. I really want you dig this gameplay and create fast and challanging expereance. So please don't leave this game and finish it after ludum dare.

A really interesting concept. Pretty fun overall.
Took a bit of time at the beginning to "understand" the game, but the moment it clicked it I enjoyed it a lot. I wish the gameplay was a bit more "smooth". I think that with a bit more of polish it can be a way better game.

Again, I love the mashup of these themes.

Really cool combination and a solid foundation. With some additional polish and mechanics I could easily get addicted to this.

FYI to others, press up/down on the arrow keys to force the game to display after loading.

Very interesting idea! It fits the theme very well.

I think that would be great if it had more tower defense elements like, have the change to build before each wave starts, know the path that the enemies will take. Maybe more space too, so the player have more time to react to the enemies.
