Praise is not enough by Lumasi Games

[raw]
made by Lumasi Games for LD 40 (JAM)

Praise is not enough is a game of theatrical duels. Engage your opponent and strike him down. But look close at your praise level. Too low and public will denounce you, too much and you'll face an opponent you are not yet ready to battle.

How to play:

Drag the cards at you opponent to defeat him. You have two parameters to look after health and praise. For the smoothest playthrough try to keep your praise in the required praise range.

In between fights you can purchase new skills in Collections. To equip a card, purchase it and drop it on the card in your deck to swap them.

You can also upgrade your armor, that will provide additional health to you.

I like the visuals of the game, but the enemies look a little out of place. Nice concept with the cards!

The environment art looks great. The store wasn't very intuitive to me, I think the UI could be improved to be a bit clearer which was unfortunate because that was essential step in building your deck. Some more sizzle when playing cards would've gone a long way to up the presentation. I'm curious, what engine you're using?

The game feels awkward to play, and the disparate visuals between the enemies and the background art is just too noticeable. It feels like a hodgepodge as opposed to a unified entry. I couldn't really tell what was going on when I used a card, no effects just one of the lumps of cubes in the distance shifted about.

The long and short is, I feel like the best things about the game, the music and the background art and the card art, all feel like stuff that was made before the Jam, it may even be allowed free assets, however when those things are used you aren't supposed to be rated on them (that's why you can opt out of graphics/sound). If they were made in the Jam, great job, they look good. Otherwise you shouldn't be judged on them.

Hey @ilseroth, despite the fact that I appreciate your effort in trying the game and leaving the comment, I deeply disagree with your comment. ALL art, music and basically all assets used in the game were completely done from scratch during jam time period. We thought about some game design ideas beforehand but that's it. We did not use any marketplace assets whatsoever.

I agree that some aspects of the game feels unpolished and that's due to time constraints and scope of the project. We had plans on enemies visuals as well as animations, sounds and effects of course.

@ilseroth Hey, thank you for the feedback. Everything was produced in 72 hours. Sadly we did not have enough time to produce effects for cards, but hopefully it can be enjoyable the way it is.

P.S. Sorry for the second comment. Haven't seen that one of team members had replied.

Fair enough; there is an issue with a lot of people using premade assets and getting rated based on them, so if it was made by scratch,as I said earlier, good job to the artists. My comment was purely for *if* you had done it, then to opt out of graphics/audio. Otherwise, it has solid environment art, music and the UI is pretty good too. It's just that when you get something as different as your character art and your environmental art, something shady is usually afoot.

I must say, that I like the idea of theatrical duels and need to keep balance between health and praise. I although appreciate the fact, that all the visuals were made from scratch. But, at the same time, I feel like more attention was given to graphics, rather than gameplay and general feeling from the game. It makes pretty beautiful game feel boring as there is no impact from your actions. Although, there should be more praise-lowering cards, most of the time you don't have a choiсe but to spam attacks. Music is unentertaining as well. I am truly sorry to say that, because game looks very good and the concept of it sounds fun.

Gorgeous background visuals and music, but everything else seems subpar with them. Gameplay isn’t very engaging, most time spent just checking out the numbers so visuals feel just add-on. It felt bit more like I was playing blackjack than duelling. I really like the idea and atmosphere but the game part needs something more.

Nice concept, visuals and ambience.
The combat effects could use some more visual feedback, I wish the attacks were more flashy! Still, the deck building system is cool, and it had me going for a while! With some work, this game could become really great!

ALso, I have not been able to deduce how the game ties to the topic, But I have not put that much thought into it, still would be cool to know :D

Keep up the hard work! :)

Can't tell how much is my opponent damaging me or adding to the praise meter. More feedback to action on screen please.

I really like the background (should I say "set/stage"), well done there. The idea itself is unique so brilliant choice there and the music was pleasant.

@multiplexor Hey, thank you for some praise=) The idea behind the theme was, the more praise you get the harder the next opponent will be, so you'll have to balance damage/praise to not greatly exceed praise range.

Nicely dressed up card game. I think you should re-organize the UI a bit, so that the playing cards don't cover up the combatants when you're picking which card to play. The combatants are a bit hard to see against the background, so do something about that. And the music is great, but keeps getting interrupted abruptly when scene changing. Leave it playing so we can enjoy it. Overall this is a very good entry. Well done!
