Diner Dive by pebkac

[raw]
made by pebkac for LD 41 (JAM)

Welcome to Diner Dive, in which you play as Scuba Doo, proprietor of the Fishy Foods Restaurant.

What do I do

Clients will place orders, shown as yellow cards at the left of the screen. Each orer asks for a type of fish, and how to prepare it. You'll need to dive into the ocean to catch the fish, then use the stove to make 'm just right. Cooking takes time, but be careful not to burn anything. Place finished dishes on one of the two counters on the left. As soon as the contents of that counter match a order, that order is served out.

Scuba can carry only 1 thing. If you need a place to put that down and grab something else, use the countertop at the right. If you have cooked something that wasn't ordered, you can always throw it away in the trashcan outside.

How to play

Move using either WSAD or arrow keys. Interact with spacebar. If there are interactions available to you it will be shown as text near Scuba.

Couldn't seem to get it to run, gives me a "windows cannot access the specified device" error. Don't know if it's something on my side or not. Maybe try downloading it yourself and let me know :D

@GameSmartt Game download works fine when I download it. I can't look into this any further, so I hope others don't have the same issue...

I like the idea of diveing and cooking combined

nice combo, I guess the food here is as fresh as it gets. I did find it a bit tricky when catching fish, If I grabbed the wrong kind by mistake then i didn't see anyway to let it go other than coming to the surface to ditch it in the trash can?

@Dark Roast Studios Yeah, there's no other way to let a fish go.

It is cool that you have managed to have playable product.

Although there are a few thoughts to consider:

- It looks to be pretty challenging, especially to remember what fish did I put on which dish.
I have to get close to it to see the hint.

- Also it would be nice to have some visual indicator of how long it takes for the fish to get prepared.

- Maybe one order at a time (instead of five) at the beginning of the game could serve as some sort of tutorial and/or introduction.

I like the concept and the mechanics are all working as intended! Fits the theme nicely too. I agree that if the game was introduced a bit more slowly, and the collision boxes were a bit more...forgiving...then it would improve the player experience a bit.

Otherwise, I like it! Nice entry!

I actually really enjoyed your game. Thought here a few things which could be fixed and polished, it was a really cool concept and was fun to play. Though its a bit challenging thats what i found fun about the game. Good Job

Cool game, but I was surprised when I saw that I had not money or done commands count. Cool concept though.

Keep coding :)

@Mathiouza Thanks. Yeah, getting paid, and then spending that money on better diving equipment and kitchen utensils to reach deeper fish and prepare new dishes to make more money to ... etc ... didn't make it into the prototype.

This is an amazing idea. Prototype has some inperfections in terms of difficulcy and controls, but there's a lot of potential here!

__Fun__
It was a really enjoyable game. I did find a few things I didn't like not being able to get all the orders on screen done on time. (Maybe it's just me being slow but it was just too fast for me.) A raw fish order felt a bit intuitive by having to cook it for a second the serve it. More progression would have been better, but time is never on our side during jams.

__Innovation__
I've seen quite a few cooking games, but never played one. I liked the fact that I had to catch my own fish then cook it. It seems rather new to me.

__Theme__
I guess the genres are fishing and cooking? They work well together so they are not incompatible, and it's not very clear that there are two genres. While I think that it makes for a good game, it doesn't quite work for the theme.

__Graphics__
You opted out for graphics but I'm going to give you some advice if that's okay (if not, continue). I think you have the right ideas, but you could practice a bit more with color compositions, and stay away from 0,0,255-like full colors and match them together a bit. Shape wise I guess it pretty fine and all shapes were really clear. Assuming you made all graphics yourself I'd suggest you don't opt-out of it next time.

__Audio__
The audio was mostly indicative for new orders so I find it hard to rate you here. Sorry.

__Humor__
The idea was actually pretty funny. And for some reason the character looks really silly too. So humor points for you.

__Mood__
The ocean did give me some feel of depth and suffocation. I did feel the lack of connection to the people that ordered food, or a waiter to bring me the list. The latter is a lot of work for a bit of extra mood, so I forgive you.

__Overall__
Overall I think this is an enjoyable entry. It was pretty original to me and a see a lot of room for exploration.

Cool, I like how you need to go and catch the fish before you can start cooking, well done for making this game!

I'd try and use more imagery to represent the ingredients - there was a lot of text, sometimes it was hard to read.

Congrats and well done! Keep making games!
