Nightwalk by sreal

[raw]
made by sreal for LD 39 (COMPO)

Though this is not really a 'game', more of a bunch trying new stuff.

  • raycasting for movement instead of relying on physics, still pretty janky. Press down. I dare you.
  • pixel art that's ok for a first time using a program
  • animations connected to velocity and also the footstep sound effects.
  • shader for the darkness

Still tho, please try it!! Load the review rockets and fire away. Any feedback is great, especially about the animation on the old lady, or programming stories you have about getting raycast movement working.

--> PLEASE GIVE FEEDBACK AND VOTE HERE <--

Controls

Default Unity controller input, so...

  • keyboard/gamepad directions for movement
  • Control/Button 1/A/x to begin

..and the often forgotten...

  • escape to quit from this horrible experience and go and review a different game

Not sure how seriously I should take this game so I'll just use the points you bought up there:

raycasting for movemet - I didn't notice any difference between this and physics based movement so congratulations on that one
pixel art - the pixel art is really good
animations / shader for the darkness - they worked out well too

The darkness/light was very cool the animation needs a little work i think maybe make the leg movement a bit more obvious it was for me barely noticable that the legs actually animated

Looks amazing, but gameplay elements are understandably quite lacking. If this had dedicated levels it could be great. also the rhythmic walking sounds were a nice touch.

The pixel art is very nice and the movement works fine. The sound is a bit annoying, but at least it has some sound :). I'll give you a good graphics and mode rating, but I can't really give you a high overall score since there isn't really much of a game here. Still a fun little experiment though, well done.

Not much to play, in a sense of gameplay, but looks great!

I am 100% sold on the art style! Give me more of those colored star night skies.

10/10, pressed down and was not disappointed

Love the art style and lighting. I'd like to see them in an actual game.

I always will prefer this kind of movement (a finished version, of course) to physics based. It feels much more solid.

I really like the graphics and the shader. The movement is a bit jerky though, and if you hold down the down key you end up falling off the map. Otherwise it's quite interesting.

What you've got looks really good. The walking stick is a bit wobbly because the bottom of the walking stick never properly plants itself onto one spot on the ground, but otherwise what you have is pretty cool. I especially love the graphics, it's good pixel art you've got there! Don't worry about not having made game, any time spent working on your skills is time well spent . Are you considering making a game in a future jam? I'd be curious to see what you make!

Oh, so this is what they mean by "walking simulator". :) I enjoyed it, for what it is. Might be something you could develop further by adding levels with different things to not walk into and the likes.

The raycast controls worked good, especially up stairs and falling through platforms.

The art is nice, liked the simplicity of it. of course we can say that the game is missing but i found it funny.

Really nice prototype, would like to see complete game made of it. Good Job!

I really like your art style.
Regarding the movement I found a tiny bug: when you switch direction while you are on a staircase you fall of.

First, thank you for being honest and stating what was done, second the artwork is nice, the animation is fits perfectly, and the lantern effect is good. Therefore, for trying something new I say "nice work" :)
