Bus Mayhem by Sebastian-M

made by Sebastian-M for LD 40 (JAM)

Welcome to Frenzy City.

A really nice cubic-looking place, where public transportation is surprisingly popular and cars are not that durable.

You are the new bus driver, in charge of the original bus of the city. The tires are a little used, so expect some slipping here and there. Also, the bus allows for only 100 passengers, but we don't follow those rules here. It does become harder to drive when it's overweight though... Good luck, and please don't destroy the bus.

Controls

  • 'W' - Acceleration
  • 'A', 'D' - Steering
  • SPACE - Brake
  • 'S' - Reverse

How To Play

You have to pick up the passengers at every bus stop and take them "safely" to the central station.

  • Move in the street, avoiding other cars and buildings.
  • Stop at the pickup zones of the stations. These are marked with blue lines. Use the brake (SPACE) to completely stop touching the zone. Po.PNG
  • When all passengers aboard, continue to the next station until you reach the central station. End.PNG
  • Beware of your health and overweigth level in your car control panel. The more passengers you have, the less stable your bus is. It get's super drifty. UI.PNG

What about that sweet funky music?

I'm very passionate about music. Although this is only my second Ludum Dare, you could say it's already a tradition that I spend almost half of the time composing, arranging and recording a special song for the game. This time it's a weird funk song that adds instruments when your bus gets more and more crowded. It ends up fitting really nicely. I encourage you to try to hear the whole song in it's 4 stages without dying in the game. It's not easy.

Hear the song on Soundcloud

Thanks to my dad for recording the brass section of the song. He did an amazing job with it.

What about everything else?

The graphics are all done using nothing but the basic Unity's 3D shapes. Hence the cubic-look of the place. Some modified sound effects, some custom car physics written using C# and ... That's pretty much it.

Known Issues

  • lightning Problems. (Fixed v1.1. Lightning system migth take some time to load properly)
  • You can win while dead. (Fixed v1.1)
  • Bus not stoping when picking up passengers (Fixed v1.1)
  • If the car flips upside down, your only options are quitting the game (with ESC) and open it again, or wait for the cars to kill you and restart with 'R'.
I'll stop the description here, otherwise it'll take you longer to read this than to complete the game.

This game is pretty goofy. Controls are a bit too slidey and theres a glitch that causes you to not stop after stopping for more passengers. Still the game is pretty funny and kept my interest until the game ended. Nice job!

Funny game! WebGL was definitely hard to play, but at least you have it as an option and gave the warning going in. Cool entry! :)

Wow, the bus is just uncontrollable! And other cars keep crashing in me, even when I stopped at station.

@royoyo Well the idea is that the bus becomes hard to drive the more passengers you get. But I never intended to be uncontrollable. And yeah they crash on you on the stops, but they don't affect your health, so it's okay.

It's pretty good! I think it's too easy though. More traffic or less HP would make it more interesting. The art is good but it could have used some post processing :)

Maybe its just my leet Crazy Taxi skillz, but I beat this first go with 200+ passengers :sunglasses:

Maybe some kind of points system to reward 'perfectly' stopping would have been nice, or have passengers board much slower the further away from the stop you stop at...? Things to consider if you expand on this post-Jam, but this is a solid entry as is (although slightly disappointing it just ends after one level - maybe could have just restarted that level with a lower initial time limit each time?)

Crazy Taxi got nothing on this.

Fell in love with this game the moment I saw the thumbnail. A bus so crammed with people that they were popping out of it? That's _my_ kind of weird. I'm glad to see that the game managed to live up to the high expectations I had on it.

This game was a wacky romp, with some funny comments. But the real deal was by the end of the run, where the thing was noticeably harder to control. So there I was, clumsily driving a bus of sardine-like people, grinning like an idiot throughout the short ride.

While simple and short, this was one heck of an experience. Great job! In behalf of my team, we're looking forward to what you can come up with in the future! Cheers! :whale:

The physics of the bus is chaotic, I love it ! The difference between each load is well implemented. Great job.

Good game and a lot of fun. Physics were a bit whacky but that just added to the difficulty, especially with a full bus. Fits the theme well.

Overall a fun game, though I did have a few problems. First, the bus takes forever to stop when empty. Stopping is actually one of the things seemingly made easier by having too many people on the bus. Second, you seem to be scored based on the number of passengers but I didn't seem to have any control over that? Finally, the biggest issue I had was with the other cars. There's not really any way to avoid them. They just drive in straight lines and make no attempts to avoid the bus whatsoever. I noticed that you turned off damage while the bus was being loaded, which was nice, but I would have preferred that cars at least try not to hit the bus in the first place.

Still, this was a fun game to play and it captured the theme pretty well. Nice work!

Interesting physics game.
Music was definitely top quality.
Web version ran ok for me.

That's an excelent game, I want more of it! So, more levels or an arcade mode would be great post-jam addition. Also while the music is good and, as rarely seen, adapt to the situation by adding tracks, there is little to no sound effects. Drifting tires, crowd sound (with exclamations),... could add a layer of chaos over an already excelent game.

Wow this was great. I am of those guys that do not know how to use the breaks, so I GTAed it, but I got the point :). I would love some settings on the sensitivity of the turns or maybe the front and back movement speed. Considering how polished the current UI is I do not thing this would be too much. Nice job !!

It feels far too easy to land upside down. Sometimes I didn't even know why this had sent me flying. Also, the speedometer is bonkers. And the worst thing about this game... is having just one level. Come on, make a post-jam version, because this surely deserves it!

Excellent job on the music, and you managed to get a strong core of a game to carry it too! As other people have mentioned, I'm a little disappointed there was only one level, since the game didn't feel like it was hitting it's stride until right at the end for me. Still good work at putting this all together within the period of the jam!

A fun game. I loved the way the bus became harder to control as the number of passengers grew. I did manage to reach the end of the level on my first try, so I would have liked to have seen more passengers piling up in there! I was expecting more levels and was disappointed when the game ended because I had a lot of fun. The music was great, the visuals were nice and the game play was fun.

My only issue was that the other cars would bump into me when I was loading passengers, which didn't feel fair to me.

Overall, a fun game with great potential!
