Unnatural Occurrences: The Events Culminating in the Invocation of the Soul Reaper

An occult management simulator.

Sell potions to make money, spend money on equipment and other items to improve your abilities as an occultist, with the aim of summoning the most evil demon there is... but be careful not to arouse too much suspicion whilst doing so, and keep an eye on your mental health, the dark arts can have a severe effect on it....

UI:

  • Click on the buttons at the bottom of the screen to access the shop and actions available in a given room (not all rooms have actions) (and the menu button).
  • Click on the buttons at the top right to switch between the 5 rooms.
  • Stats in the shop and action menu are red if they are a cost that you cannot afford, white if you can afford it, and green if they are a reward.
  • Actions give one-off bonuses, items bought in the shop increase the rate it which your stats increase every tick.

Basic Guide:

  • Money: Make money by selling potions in the Lab. Upgrade the Lab and read more books to make better potions and more money!
  • Suspicion: Selling potion, casting spells and summoning daemons increases your suspicion, don't allow it to get too high otherwise you may be punished...
  • Foreboding: Upgrade the chapel and read some books to increase your foreboding score.
  • Vital Fluid: Can only be attained through goat sacrifice; upgrade the butchery to increase your vital fluid.
  • Madness: Take care when meddling in the dark arts, the more you meddle, the worse things get...
  • Dark Lore: Purchase more books from the library in order to increase your knowledge of Dark Lore.
  • Expedience: Upgrade the Lab and read books to increase your expedience.
  • Malevolence: Read books and upgrade the exhumer in the the graveyard to increase your malevolence.

BUG FIXES: - Madness and Suspicion will go yellow then red as you get closer to losing the game, so you know before you lose - Music now working properly - Candles now working properly - Shop now working properly - It's possible to summon the Soul Reaper (Satan) - stats balanced - UI fixes

Awesome sim. Loved the depth and the humor. Art was beautiful. Sound effects nice. Some moody atmospheric stuff was there - not quite music but spooky enough. Menus quite simple but I liked the inclusion of settings. A little hard to figure out how much suspicion would make me lose etc. Some in-game explanation of mechanics would really have helped - some icons and numbers don't mean a lot. But after some trial and error I figured most of it out I think. Keep improving that UI :). In summary, a very impressive showing with great mood and art.

Really loved the idea and atmosphere, completely looking forward to a version with stable UI to spend more time with it. Loved the amazing lo-fi graphics and the game flow. Good work!!

I'm so disappointed I can't figure out how to not get hanged down, because your game had a mazing mood. Audio and graphics are really well done. I particularly love the third room, the one with the goat and the butcher. Please add some information so I can invoke the Soul Reaper !

Great atmosphere, art and sound fit very well. Took quite a bit of trial and error to figure out what to do, could use some more explanation in-game. I'll probably be back to play this one again.

Wow great mood! But I couldn't manage to get "Foreboding" so I have been blocked real quick! Too bad!

Audio was really crackly on the web version.
Couldn't really figure out the point of the different things.
Also didn't like the idea of being a character of the occult.

@jason-kennedy Sorry about the audio, seems to be a unity bug - we've taken out the layered music to stop the crackling on the web version, have a look at the windows/mac version for the full effect though!

Really good mood ! Is there anything we can do to reduce Madness / prevent it from increasing ? Good job anyway :)

Pretty impressive in terms of amount of content. I like the atmosphere as well. Feedback: It would have been nice to have a bit more of a tutorial or guide during the first playthrough because I really didn't know what to do at first.

@plasmonic, can't run Mac on Linux as far as I know and I don't have the desire to make Windows work via wine. ;)

Great, atmospheric game! Love all the text: book titles, newspaper headlines etc were clever and entertaining. The music and graphics, while simple, were immersive and drew me in to this world. It made me want to play more until I won! (which I did ;) )

The only real criticism I have is that the menu design could maybe be improved, and I came across a few bugs:
- "money" menu in the first room stuck open on my second run
- bug when exiting settings menu, couldn't figure out how to get back to the game

Other minor criticisms:
- button icons could maybe have been a bit cooler (considering how cool the rest of the art is)
- Font a little hard to read sometimes (though it does suit the theme well)

@svenfrankson There's no was of reducing madness no, it acts as a time limit!

@jason-kennedy Have you tried the web version? We'll try to sort a linux version if there's time!

@plasmonic, in response to my 'web version has issues' comment you said to try windows/MAC ;)

@jason-kennedy good point! I'll sort a linux version... the sound is a bit better in the web version now though!

Very impressive! The graphics are excellent and the gameplay is really interesting. This'd be a game with some solid atmosphere no matter what, and the fact that you pulled it off in an LD timeline is amazing. Great work!

Haha! The more unexplained indicators there is the worst it is to figure it out! That works well with the theme, but more in-game clues about impacts of your actions would have helped to figure it out without having to monitor the eight indicators by eye.

Your game shines with it's great graphics and the atmopshere of mad widzard facility which is exceptionally restituted. That's definitely a great entry.

Nice incremental game. Ambiance well set (reminded me of Irenicus dungeon). The game seems rather pointless as I don't get to feel all the awesome things I can achieve with my newly crafted spells. Overall I enjoyed the experience. Well done.

Great freaky mood and an interesting gameplay. I like the way so as to switch screens - smooth transition. I did not understand all about rules, but I had fun playing. Well done ++
