I feel like Sodaboi is using a perlin noise movement, but he always seems to outwit me
Really great use of the theme, gameplay was fast and exciting. The combo scoring and difficulty ramp are really well balanced. And obviously I love the art and music, especially the cannon animations.
Only criticism I have is that the game doesn't make it very clear what the lose/win conditions are.
Minor complains:
- Soda bubbles feel bit too static on the screen and overlaps in the same place sometimes.
- Music is well... interesting
- Damage shouldn't have the same color as bubbles
- No ammo counter and 'i got hit' indicators.
@m-dam - The game ends when the screen fills up with the green soda bubbles. Your health bar is indicating how full the screen is of bubbles, and as you wipe them away the health comes back. We could have definitely made that more clear!
@titos2k - Thank you! Definitely would love to make the soda bubble generation feel more natural in the future. I think the damage you're talking about is probably the combo numbers that increase your score. You're definitely right, we'd love to make those numbers much more exciting and clear later on. Thank you for your awesome feedback =)
Thanks for the feedback everyone! Here are my follow up questions:
@m-dam - Do you have any suggestions for how we can improve this? My only inclination is to make the health bar taller.
@titos2k - We plan to improve the bubbles so they feel less static. I will also look into making sure they don't overlap. I agree it can be strange when they overlap.
What do you mean exactly by 'i got hit' indicators? As the screen fills with bubbles, the hp bar fills as well. Once it is full the player dies. Then hits on Sodaboi show the combo bonus points. Perhaps there is something we did not make clear enough.

I had fun with this game, it was very challenging, but not too challenging to make it unplayable. The audio-visual aspects of the game blended together very well. You guys came up with a very fun idea, well done!
Also, thank you for spelling 'boi' the correct way :)
@frittatenbank - There is a difficulty curve to this one but once you get the hang of it you can continue to improve your recent high score!
My score:

All in all, it's quite polished and well executed.
One critique I have is that he moves sometimes a bit too random. With focus being split between him and clearing the screen, sometimes I would find I'd follow to line up the shot only to have him turn the other direction right when I shot. Just a small thing, and I'm sure playing it more I'd get accustomed to it.
Audio was really good, enjoyed it a lot, fit very well into the game.
Overall a solid entry and I hope you continue to pursue making games, and continue to work and develop this game as well.

Awesome assets and cool mechanics! I just wished there was a way to temper with the cannon speed. Sometimes it felt like just chasing him then he suddenly changes the direction and there we are chasing him again.
Also, I don't know if it's my browser problem (chrome) but I can't see the top of the screen, I didn't know there was a health bar until I saw the screenshots. And finally, it took me some time to realize I could just send a whole chain of cannonballs after the first hit

Cheers!
The gameplay is simple but fits the theme well. I had a hard time multitasking though.
Great entry anyway!
as always ;)
@manbeardgames - It was so fun watching you play on the stream! Thanks for giving it a go, and it was awesome seeing you get better with each try.
@himadri-sekhar-mahanta - I'm really happy to hear that the drive to improve kept you playing longer! I definitely agree on the combo numbers being too hard to see. One of the biggest things I didn't budget my time properly for was the HUD elements. I would have loved to make it all feel more rewarding with better feedback there and in the health bar as well.
@nihilaleph - This is actually probably due to the use of our CSS Flexbox as it centers the game along with the controls below it.
@dimlight - You are a real trooper for using the touchpad to play this. If you have a mouse I'd recommend trying it out with mouse and A / D + spacebar, as the controls are much more natural. That being said I apologize for not considering the touchbar in our control scheme.
@fivenamefivesocks - I'm glad you enjoyed it! Next time I'll make sure to budget time to do HUD work and button feedback. In the game itself I'd say we're missing a cannon animation on when you fire, and possibly a little dust trail from Sodaboi and a better soda can in the air animation as well. I'd love to hear your ideas if there are other animations you feel could have improved your experience!
@gamepopper - The canon recharges quickly after delivering consecutive hits on Sodaboi. We will make that more clear in the description =)
Anyway, I like the concept, and it is a great game for a weekend.
Thanks for sharing this game with me. I had a blast trying to beat my previous high scores! Boy is this game hard though haha!
Nice soda-themed music and visuals. (I would not have believed that music can be soda-themed, but you did it!)
Sodaboi is so punchable! Next Ludum Dare idea: make a VR game starring Sodaboi that you can play with a real sledgehammer. I guarantee it will be a hit. (pun intended)
@benjamin-l - Thank you for playing! There is no win condition in the game, just lasting as long as you can and getting the highest score you can manage =)
@m-1 - Ready for Sodaboi to be the new hot esports team game xD And thank you so much for the music compliments! We wanted the music to feel soda like without using actual soda sounds!
