Tetris Escape! by Ninjascribble

[raw]
made by Ninjascribble for LD 41 (JAM)

Blobby is trapped! Avoid the falling blocks, or use them to build a path to the exit. The only way out is up!

Play it now! (hosted on github.io)

Tetris Escape combines the classic puzzle game with some self-generated platforming goodness. We built it for the browser using PhaserJS, Aseprite, and Chiptone.

Controls

Use the arrow keys to move Blobby:

  • ⇦ Move left
  • ⇨ Move right
  • ⇧ Jump

Hold SHIFT and use the arrow keys to move the blocks:

  • ⇪ + ⇦ Move block left
  • ⇪ + ⇨ Move block right
  • ⇪ + ⇧ Rotate block
  • ⇪ + ⇩ Move block down faster

Take-aways

What went well

  • Simple-enough concept to get it done over the weekend
  • Successfully married tile-based and physics-based movement
  • First time using Aseprite, and I'm already sold!

What could have gone better

  • I really wanted to make it so that full rows of blocks would disappear, but we just ran out of time
  • Some collision detection wonk, especially when rotating blocks
  • No win condition

Overall, pretty happy with the entry. Might spend some time tweaking collision mechanics over the next few weeks, but it feels OK for a weekend jam.

Congrats on completing LD41! You came up with a combination of genres that is really smart and I loved the concept. However, I found it to be a bit too tough to have to re-start from zero once you fail, but I feel there is some potential there!

@MartinTristan If you hold the SHIFT key down, then the arrow keys will move the blocks

Fun concept, executed fairly well. Additional mechanics such as lines decreasing would have added for sure. Good entry :)

Wow! This is a great concept! It was difficult, but I couldn't stop playing! I liked blobby too! Great game!

This is amazing! I'd have preferred the WASD keys to be for block moving - since then I could move both at the same time, but that's nitpicking. The idea and execution otherwise is great - good work!

Good job with the game. The idea worked well with the theme and it was executed pretty well. It is a pretty challenging game and I had fun with it.

Quite fun and challenging. I had a good bit of fun with this, however I found it hard to slide down a 1 gap hole, you have to get it JUST right.
Regardless very nice work, keep it up. :D

Very cool concept! The fun is killed a little by the fact that you can mess up so easily, getting Blobby stuck between too high walls. It would be cool if one were able to rescue him (e.g. by actually completing lines). Or did I miss anything?
