Corn Wars LD (Farming-Shooter) by Firesplash Entertainment

Did you ever try to shoot a bullet into the ground and see what happens? Probably it will grow a big beautiful tree of pistols or bullets or probably it will just be a bunch of wheat plants... Who knows?
We do.
Welcome to Corn Wars!
You need to plant seeds and sell the fruit to be able to buy better seeds, weapons and pay your taxes. Oh! Wait! Weapons? YES! They are... like... Uncommon tools for farming..?
Made within about 45 to 50 hours of development using Blender, Unity and a few other tools. All assets except sounds, the paper background of signs and the texture of our fire effect are self- and handmade.
Have fun playing! Please remember: This is our very first game project and it is a very very very very very ... very very pre-alpha game. Kappa...
We are looking forward to see your thoughts about it!

SPOILER ALERT
Your task is, to survive increasing taxes as long as possible. To achieve this, you have to plant different types of vegetable and sell those at the silo, to get coins.
The seeds need a prepared ground. So you have to use the shotgun on the ground first. After that you can shoot the seed with the revolver or sniper rifle into the ground. You can buy the type of plants in the second floor of the barn. On the boxes you can also equip the bought seeds.
Be aware, that prepared ground falls back to normal ground after a certain amount of time. Fields, that are closer to the water stay longer prepared.
In unpcoming releases will be more weapons (and therefore more fun ... yay!) and more strategic elements like the need to water plants.
END OF SPOILER
Bugfix
We noticed a hand full of bugs in our LD Release... we got in a hurry in the last minutes... The "After-LD-Bugfix-Release" is our fix. It is just a technical fix, no content changes. - Corrected a name on th sub billboard - Corrected typo in tutorial-sign - Corrected the gameover-function (you had endless gameplay by accident)
Post-Jam-version
On May 8th we uploaded a Post-Jam-Version with a few improvements requested by players. This is of course not eligible for rating but we want to give somewthing back to you :) Also we are proud to announce that Corn Wars will be taken a step further. We are starting development on a real CornWars Game right now. Learn more on our brand new website: http://www.cornwarsgame.com

We decided we will turn this idea into a real game (this is just something like a technical demo haha).
We will start the development really soon and we will of course fix the design flaws like the teleporting upstairs (it was planned to climb the ladder), weird controls, missing animations, static look etc in the official game release. This was our very first game and we are proud we finally made it to a fairly well playable state :) We are even more proud that you guys like it!
We will be streaming ludum dare games during the play and rate timespan on our twitch channel. feel free to leave a follow and head over if you'd like to watch: http://www.twitch.tv/firesplashtv
The bugfix is only about Coins getting lower than zero (we did notimplement the gameover call accidentially) and two typos on sprites...
Probably there was a mistake in your understanding of the tutorial? You can't plant using the shotgun. Shotgun is for preparing farmland (and vaproising plants haha) and the other weapons are for planting (with different ranges btw - try to shoot the farmland from the window upstairs using th sniper ;) )
Oh and the point with not being able to carry two weapons was intended to make the game a bit harder but in the final version there will be much huger and mor ipressive things (did you notice the tank? ;) )
Yes we had a few issues with unity and lacked a few hours of time in the end. Could you tell us what bugs you experienced? I will try to do a second bugfix release by the end of this week (have to go to work).
Overall though, I think this is a great game.
With a little adjustments here and there, you can get a cooool game out of this
10/10 for the artwork.
Feel free to stream my game on your Twitch channel: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/caves-of-mimicry :D.
@Rayne did you play WebGL-Version? We know that has bugs we can't fix at the moment. Seems to be speciality of WebGL-Exportt unfortunately and we did and do not focus on WebGL. That is just for a first idea about the game. What bugs did you encounter? I do just know about smaller flws like what @mza said the discrepancy between inventory switching and picking up items. We noticed that too late and changing means code changes in several places as well as testing. I will fix this by the end of the week. Sorry am a bit busy at the moment.
@Cryovr thanks for the nice words also to you :)
I am - and I bet @siml is also - very proud that you like our game :) We are planning to add much more stuff and some tweaks (to make the game not get boring over time) and release a steam version :) But this will last quite some time :)
Attacking or stealing was too mainstream for us :D But in our steam release there will in fact be some enemies but we will keep the current logic (preparing and planting using weapons) but just add occasionally appearing enemies. But more enemies that fit into the farming character.
It will stay a farming game and you will use crazy weapons for crazy tasks. Stay tuned ;) But the steam release will last quite a bit. We do not want to make a game like DayZ being in alpha for ages ;)
Grüße aus dem Allgäu!
The Collider is in fact a bit too small for radish. Corn should be fine as it was our testing crop. Wheat is somewhere between. Unfortunately we were lacking a bit of time to test that throughly.
Holding down E is not intended for our real game (this is just like a preview) but we will likely implement some tools to make harvesting easier. In fact we planned to only put 4 plants per tile but it did not look that good :D
Also the harvesting was a little bit confusing. First of all it was kind of pixelhunty. Then for some reason the avatar wouldn't collect more than 24 grains... and the harvest was way way way more than this. Basically after 3 trim to sell the harvest, and the field not getting cleared in any noticable way I gave up.
Also I am not sure that 2 extra fields were neccesary, given that handling even one field was tedious.
The graphics are nice though. And it was surprisingly satisfying to watch the crops grow.
Oh... And some better telegraphing that the crops are reasy for harvest might have helped. Like made the harvestable plants a differendt color (like keep this yellow colo for harvestable wheat, and make the growing one greener.)
This is now not more than a basic concept...
For the full-grown crops we planned adding some sparkling particles but this also fell off the table as less important task.
CornWars LD is aber 5% of the planned game and we implemented about 70-80% of what was planned to be in the LD-Release... We planned to also implement the tank and one kind of grenade.
The limit on 24 per type is intended to make it a bit harder. probably we should instead have limitied on 24 per slot instead per type...
What coulf improve the "Tedious harvest" issue is to harvest the entire plot with one operation, rather than picking the individual stems. Like use the tile hitbox for harvesting as well (same way you use it for... shotgun-ing and seeding. And them make player to hold the button for a couple of seconds before the entirety of a tile gets harvested. This way even if you can only harvest one tile before you have to run off and sell, the progress of harvesting will be visible. Currently having three trips to the granary and the field not showing any progress was frustrating to the point of final straw... (pun intended)
We will address this 100% for our complete game :)
I saw your blog post about streaming games, if you don't mind could you check ours out? We also did a farming game but we combined it with horror.

it's not the first unity game I can't run. Not exactly sure why, but it gives me an error on all the possible settings I can try
"Switching to resolution 1280x800 failed, trying lower one
All resolution switches have failed
Screen: DX11 could not switch resolution (1280x800 fs=0 hz=0)"
Yes we planned to implement the shooting different but we were a bit too slow. Probably I will put that into our Post-LD update.

I am so sorry for not being able to play and rate your games yet... I got a cold...
I will definitely play and rate them before time is over!
