Petri-geddon by kyle-smith

made by kyle-smith for LD 38 (JAM)

petri animation.gif A very simple strategy game that takes place entirely inside the confines of a petri dish. Control you microbes to eradicate the germs. Watch out for wandering viruses and (mostly) deadly anti-biotics!

Yes I am aware of the crumby title. This is a game making jam, not a game title jam.

Gameplay

Probiotics

You start every round with a singular microbe. Your goal is to eliminate all your enemies (the Germs) to move on, but it won't be so easy. You can't consume an enemy germ unless you're large enough (2 sizes bigger).

Growing

To grow your microbe you must consume things. You can consume food (green orbs), smaller germs, or even your own microbes. (you monster!)

Splitting

You can only grow so much though. After a certain point your microbe will divide into two smaller microbes. This grants you a tactical advantage but also makes you vulnerable until you grow larger again.

Dangers

Not only are there germs running around trying to consume you, but there are also dangers like viruses. A virus can infect any microbe and after a few turns the microbe will die and release two viruses. Viruses will shift about aimlessly but don't get caught off gaurd! There are also deadly anti-biotics. At least ... they're mostly deadly. Legend tells of some microbes having the ability to consume this deadly poison without any ill effects.

Neat theme and graphics. I also like the turn based tactics design, except it is veeery slow to play. Each microbe taking a turn at a time, slowly ambling about and then it *crashed* :boom:

I had about 10 microbes sitting around, not one being able to terminate an enemy. Growing fat and complacent and then it *crashed* :boom:

It also *crashes* a lot, and I mean a lot. Could not finish one match completely. :boom::boom::boom:

Dang. That'll teach me to not check the comments more often. Fixed the crashing bug I introduced in 1.2. And I also agree the pace is a bit slow. I wanted to make it so all microbes could move but ran out of time. Maybe a post compo update.
