When Life Gives You Lemons by sebastianscaini

About
When life gives you lemons, you’d best be prepared to defend yourself. Citrons, those little lemon folks out there, fell from the sky earlier. Their fancy spaceship thingy came crashing down onto my farm. Now, we don’t take too kindly to strangers around here. So grab your gun and get ready.
It’s lemon season.

It pains me to say this, but the actual game does not live up to the expectations set by the intro. It's quite well made and it still animates beautifully, but it's just a top down shooter with two types of easy enemies and no real goal to achieve. And after that intro that is on par with some well-made paid games on Steam if not better the game itself looks a little dull.
The game itself is fun as hell, specially evading the tall lemony bois. If I were to criticize anything, it'd be the shooting. Reloading didn't have anything to communicate it properly (at least not obviously) apart from the sound effect, which sounded very similar to the clicking when the gun was empty. That meant sometimes I forgot I wasn't reloading because I was pressing the left mouse button.
Either way, your jam production value is getting too damn high. We don't stand a chance. My menu wasn't even juicy :'(
Great work on this, congrats to the whole team!
Good job!
Also excellent voice over in the tutorial, i didnt see that in any other games.
The game works very well, with controls responding nicely. Simple mechanics but very fun to play.
Excellent job!
- Add a shooting delay, you can fire of that rifle like a tommy gun :D
- Maybe add a little knockback to the player after shooting
- Tutorial was pretty good.
- The graphics are knocking my socks off. Wow this looks amazing. Especially the Tutorial and MainPage.
- Gameplay lacks a bit of depth. And gets repetitive pretty fast.
- I dont see much of the theme implemented here
Soild entry. Good work guys!
However i did feel like the game was a bit too easy as well as the theme not really being addressed fully. However i think if the spawn rate was increased slightly then it would feel like you were running out of space whereas currently you can easily avoid the lemons by moving around the map.
The gameplay is solid, but could be a bit more juicy -- I'd love to feel some more oomph. Maybe make the character respond more to firing and add more blood (lemonade?) splatters? Some kind of goal would be nice, too; I just kept playing until I accidentally got cornered, which was a little disappointing.
Also, being quite cheeky with the theme there ;)
Some issues I had were that the hit collider for the small lemons were larger than the actual graphic and the death of the large lemons had a few frames of idle before it die (so it's hard to tell if it's dead or not).
I feel a few power ups would improve the game significantly. The spawn rate could increase even faster, as it feel quite slow in the beginning for this type of game.
The accent from Ella is one-of-kind!
I would like to play this on the controller! This game asks for frenetic action!
Gameplay-wise I had fun, the animations are superb and it pushes the fun further. I had even more fun when I realized that emptying your mag on every lemon and reloading each time was more efficient.
