CoinCase (Ludum Dare 40) by Billeclipse
Its my first ludum dare compo and i can say it was pretty fun... Not as a game but as testing some of the unity's tools and assets. Well if you dare you can check it out but disclaimer its super boring :P!
Time spend on this: 5hours.
INSTRUCTIONS
Arrow Keys (←↑↓→) for movement and... thats pretty much all you can do :P
Except of course collect coins and disposed them... In 100 disposed coins you win... and if you run into "water" you die :P
EXTRA INFO
As an idea close to the theme of ludum dare 40 "The more you have, the worse it is", i made it so the more coins you collect (with your little boulder :P) the slower you become. So in order to collect more coins you have to dispose the already collected ones so you can return to your regular speed.
P.S. I know that this prototype needed much more work to be as a part of ludum dare compo but as my first project i didn't dedicated the time that i should have and also i was still trying to learn the tools of the engine... So yeah it needs a lot of improvement like adding some timer so its a little bit of a challenge and many many more... But thats what i ended up with and i am pretty happy that at least i tried and learned a little more of the engine and what it needs to participate to a event like ludum dare compo :D

The physics of the ball make it very hard to turn or change direction at high speed. This may be realistic as far as physics go, but for games it's often good to bend the rules to create fun gameplay. So I would allow faster direction changes, maybe. It does add a challenge of planning ahead how fast to go, and how to avoid falling in the water. So I dunno, maybe it's good like this too, depends on the feel you are going for.
Music was very pleasant. Good luck with your next projects!
@masamunedragon I didn't consider it will be necessary since the code its very basic but here you go :D https://github.com/Billeclipse/CoinCase
@cklidfy Yeah like some others said the controls are a little be slow already cause of the physics needed more tweaking so it could be more fun than realistic...
@Anonymous Yeah i know like i said i wanted to put a timer so it would be more challenging but i didn't had time to test it so it would be fair... I will try harder next time :D
Perhaps, you can add some "bonus" counter when the player place a great quantity of coins in the disposer ; your game would make you want to take more "risks".
:-)
Though I have to agree with the other commenter: the game's pretty boring. I never really felt challenged. I certainly like what you did with the theme, but I found the mechanic really only got noticeable after 10 or more coins, and then it just felt like trying to roll a boulder around (I mean, that's the point, but it certainly felt sluggish and unresponsive). The music was interesting (though the title screen and main theme couldn't be more musically different), but I noticed a distinct lack of sound effects.
My main suggestion would be to change the flat playing field into a obstacle course, to provide some much-needed tension while rolling around.
Good job.
Also why is the camera not rotatable? I think you could have had a nice rotation going there..
Oh and also, the way your rock moves is pretty satisfying IMO.
Keep it up!
The best way to add smoothness to camera otation is to have intended rotatiopn and gradually lerp towards it. Or just use small multiplyers on Rotate command.
Another option would be to go for a top-down view so camera rotation is not required at all. But in current setup it doesn't feel good whn you need to roll backwards without being able to tell how far is the sea...
I really liked your textures.
Still nice job for the first time try. Keep practicing :)
but i might since i see a lot of people liking the idea of it :D Right now though i can't cause i am working on a unity project for my school :P
I really liked the music and there is some potential to add more to the game post compo: Some bumps (if you are heavy you can't get up those hills). A camera that follows you, powerups that make you quicker for some time... Would be a fun little adventure I guess? :)
