The escape of the red panda by chispaLBC

[raw]
made by chispaLBC for LD 40 (JAM)

Someone is experimenting with the poor little red pandas! You have escaped but it is not over yet, they are attacking you. You notice some effects in you, try to survive as much as you can!

Controls:

  • A left
  • D right
  • W jump
  • E shield

The objective is to resist until the wave finishes. Then you will have to pick an upgrade. Having too many upgrades will make it harder.

The "skip upgrade" option reduces your max lifes by 1. You heal each wave.

Someone has said that there is a bug that makes the game over screen appear. If this is the case, please, let me know :)

known bugs: if you press A or D and the W at the same time, the red panda won't show the jump animation.

Fun little game. I made it to wave 9 in first try. Face in monitor is nice touch.

Cool idea! I didn't get to play very much, as I kept getting the game over screen the instant a new wave would start. It happened 4 times in ~7 sessions. I like the art style and the movement felt good, but I couldn't really judge how well the theme was implemented as I didn't last very long.

@wilco i honestly don't know how what could be the problem, i have tested it many times (html and windows) and it works fine :( . Basically you keep stacking upgrades until it gets hard to control

wow it's a really fun game. The basic jump feels pretty good. The red panda is cute! and the animation is lovely. Can I free the other pandas in the background? =)

Fun quick game. I wish the obstacles had more variety, but the ones there did a good job. Movement felt really solid, and upgrades felt effective.

Nice game, the oldschool variable jumping I think made it a lot better than it would have been without it, it adds a lot of fine-control to the game :)

Fun game, really nice graphics. Would have been nice to have the option to upgrade mana as well!

@criggles in the first version there was a mana upgrade and the basic mana was 3 but this made everything too easy as every upgrade has to have something bad .

thanks @talia @adrenallen and @exezin , it seems that everyone likes the jump xD

Nice game! I like the art and music!

The boom sound was really loud though, I got really scared the first time I heard it, haha!

Fun little game. Solid idea. Not sure why there's an option to skip taking an upgrade though since it lets you completely avoid the premise. The player can just choose not to take upgrades and the game doesn't seem to get any harder.

Really tight controls! I thought you fell a bit fast when letting go of space, it was really hard to control the height of your jump. I loved the art style as well. I wish there was a bit more complexity as you progressed through the waves, it got a bit stale after a bit. Really nice game though!

@arkia skip upgrade = -1 life

@chispaLBC I can reproduce the bug now:
It has something to do with the game cache, this is how i can reproduce it reliably:
In the html5 version, clear your cache and start a new session. Get hit twice in the first round, choose skip upgrade (you will gain a life), then lose on purpose.
Then play again (don't clear cache!) get hit once, skip upgrade (you'll lose a life this time), lose on purpose.
Then play again, get hit once, skip upgrade, you'll instantly lose (0 lives remaining)

What seems to be happening is this: Skip upgrade sets lives to: "amount of times upgrade skippped". But it keeps this data in the game cache or something, so it doesnt clear after you lose

I could record a video if the explanation isn't clear :)

@wilco Thank you! the skip upgrade is supposed to set your max health to 2 (the first time) and to 1 (the second time). It's fixed now

Very clever! One of the best interpretations of the theme that I saw so far.

And the art style is cute!

Great work!

A really good take on a very simple concept. Nicely executed and very nice art! I loved the background of the game, adds a lot. Was the music an electronic version of A-Punk? :P
