Culinary Creature Combat by ygrichman

menu.png Have you ever wondered what would happen if you crossed a PokΓ©mon (RPG) style game with Overcooked (Cooking), of course you haven't but we did it anyway. Prepare to see why these genres combined make a confusing game with far too many systems to build and Art to draw in 72 hours.

Changelog (Post Jam Bug Fixes)

  • V1.01 - Hotfix (WebGL build only): Fixed the Web Build requiring the F1 Key to work as that appears impossible in browsers, it now uses H. (Didn't spot this bug as I only tested the web build with a controller)
  • V1.02 - (All Builds) Fixed tool attacks names not updating when changing tool, Thanks to @elbcore for catching that. I added the attacks very last minute and didn't put the update call in the right spot, whoops.
Also applied previous hotfix to all builds, so H key is now the help button (in addition to the Start button on a controller)
  • V1.02.1 - Linux Only - Rebuilt using Universal (32/64bit) Unity Preset and tested that it runs on Ubuntu (Your mileage may vary).

First game we built in Unity and our first Ludum Dare.
Please mention any issues/bugs, play-testing this type of game is a nightmare and I'm sure someone can break it.
We have mainly tested the Windows Desktop Build any others are at the mercy of Unity. WebGL should work and Linux I've tested on Ubuntu quickly. As for Mac I have no way of testing at all, sorry.

Instructions

The aim of the game is to complete the orders that appear at the top right of the screen, to get the ingredients you will have to venture into section of the supermarket where you will encounter various ingredients and engage them in combat. Refer to the help menu for more specific tips on where to find certain ingredients.
Some ingredients have to be attacked with a certain tool for the to be prepared correctly (help menu provides guide), if you use the wrong tool the ingredient is ruined and worthless to you.

Try to capture the ingredients you need and place them in the correct cooking station (Recipe shows which), place any unneeded ingredients into the bin. Keep gathering the correct ingredients until the recipe is complete, then deliver the food to delivery table (Chequered Table).
If you make a mistake placing an ingredient you will need to fill the cooking station first to be able to bin the incorrect mixture (Limitation I was hoping to remove but time ran out).
You can only battle when you are not holding any items (Bottom left corner)
Your tools do get damaged but can be healed at the health station.

This was really fun! I had a bug in the WebGL version I played, where all of the attack names on the UI were the Stove ones. But it doesn't hinder the gameplay that much. The idea however is very original! A mix of pokemon and a cooking game works suprizingly well! Well done!

Funny concept, I thought about pokemon immediately. More animations would have added a better feeling for the user. The idea of having to move through the different food zones is pretty good, but when I captured a bread more enemies didn't appear. Nice job!

You guys did a great job, seems like you put a lot of work into it. Glad it paid off in the end, hope many people get to enjoy it like I have.

@dragojt Thanks! πŸ˜„ Yeah we ran out of time for animations, and the sprites for the left and right movement were literally made the last second (which is why they look so... uh, not good πŸ˜…).
As for the enemies not appearing once you had caught the bread, no enemies will spawn again until you have placed the caught ingredient either in a prep station or in the bin, giving you an empty inventory.

@elbcore Good catch on that bug, I added the attack names last thing and didn't even notice they didn't change as they had been all the same during development, whoops. Anyway I've patched that now.
Thanks for the feedback, we're enjoying your game as well πŸ™‚.

Funky concept - I feel like it needs a more balancing, and the font is difficult to read. That aside I really enjoyed playing this, sliding around the kitchen to my next battle πŸ™ƒ Neat Game.

Nice music. Hard to remember what to bash those meat heads with. Some animations in the fight scenes would go a long way also. Pretty good job overall!

@lewis-quaife Thanks! πŸ˜„ Yeah, the font does have some issues, (especially the fact n looks like a h πŸ˜…) but it was the best copyright free font I could find at the time that matched the style of the art.

@freso Thanks! πŸ˜„ We were going to try and add battle animations but we just ran out of time unfortunately πŸ˜…

Hahaha! I started and downloaded the game without reading the description, and laughed quite a bit when I got to the first battle.

Then I went back, and actually read the description...

I liked it! Graphics and sound are pretty nice too, so good job!

real nice game. good gameplay even for an unpolished game, neat concept. good execution, the only thing i want to see is more stations/foods/maybe a tool capture mechanic?

if ludum dare let me rate it it'd be 4 stars

Really funny concept! I was surprised by the first battle screen. I wish I could put items on the counter for later dishes because I'd spend a LOT of time running from various veggies until finding the last one I need. This is a little frustrating because I can't capture them or do anything productive, just run away. Also the battle menu should have a back button. The food items and tools were very cute. Great idea and impressive results!

@majorgoose Thanks! πŸ˜„ Yeah we did initially want to have an inventory system for keeping caught ingredients but we just couldn't manage to make it in the time. However a back button should really have been something we included! πŸ˜
