How to play :

Light Shafts is a platformer/card game. You need to get to the top of the level as fast as possible, using standard platformer movement but also a set of cards.

Cards allows you to place different platforms in the world. Be careful, you don't have an unlimited amount of them in your deck! You can only place object on hooks or (relatively) near preexisting platforms. And, when the timer runs out, it isn't a game over but you won't draw cards anymore (although you can still use those in your hand). If you can't reach the end because you ran out of cards, hit the reset button!

Once you've used a card, it won't come back, but discarded one will, eventually.

Controls :

Jump/Go up ladder : w, up arrow key

Go down ladder : s; down arrow key

Go left : a, left arrow key

Go right : d, right arrow key

Free view : hold ctrl or alt and move mouse

Activate card/place object : left mouse

Discard card/cancel placement : right mouse

View deck or discard pile : left mouse on it

Open menu : Tab

Love it! It's very cohesive. A few bugs when playing, and I had to restart because I trapped myself in :/

i met a bug that stoped me from jumping up so i was unable to get to the ending and there was no limit to placing blocks

It seems a lot of the gameplay mechanics you wanted didn't make it in. I could place platforms wherever I wanted, so all the levels were pretty easy.

The game looks fantastic. I like the music and sounds. Everything fits together well in that regard.

I didn't like the card game portion that much. All the platforms do the same thing for me: I didn't really care if I got a short platform, long platform, L platform, flashing platform, etc. They all helped me get higher up, so it didn't matter to me which card I got.

Ice platforms are ridiculously slippery. Is it even possible to stay on them? For me, I just avoided them entirely.

It has a good foundation, gameplay needs a lot of work but it could be made fun.

This game is wonderful and very charming. The atmosphere created by the visuals and audio from start to finish is spectacular. I think the concept is solid but the game warrants a few tweaks to bring it to its full potential. Very well done!

Great game and good job! Didn't realize that I couldn't walk through platforms, so I fell and got trapped from with pieces I had used to get up. Good design though!!

Neat game, the graphics and music are very nice!
It did seem a bit buggy with placing platforms at times; in some places the game didn't let me place platforms at all, even though they were very close to existing platforms.

Also, there's a bug with the trampoline platform: The collision of the trampoline itself works while holding the card, so you could just pick up the trampoline card, place the mouse cursor below the player, and off you go! :P

I loved the atmosphere and the music!

I really like the menu's (and game's) aesthetic!
It's nice to have an options menu with volume adjustment, as well.

Overall, had a good time playing the three levels! Great entry!

This game has a realy nice mood. Very well done with the graphics and audio! The platformer played smoothly and I liked the option of building part of the game with your deck of cards. It was fun!

Nice, atmospheric game! Found a bug where I pushed myself up to the ladder with the trampoline platform, which was great fun actually!

very nice, specially the mood, the audio and graphics combine quite good, and is curious to play. The stairs are a bit broken though, and not having a different animation to go up and down them, makes it feel weird. I think that in this case, the stairs are not helping the game, and if not fixed (with better feeling and different animation, I would have removed them) I loved the game overall, this was only inteded to be constructive feedback : p

I like the game, it's fun to play and the graphic is great.

Just three little things:
The ice platform could be a little less slippery
You should not be able to jump on non-placed platforms, else one can just spam jump and get to the destination too easy.
There seems to be a bug with shifting platforms, whenyou jump on it in the right moment during shifting you'll get catapulted.

@mrPenguin are you talking about the ladders ? If so, there is indeed an animation for them, but it won't trigger if you don't stop on them, didn't have the time to fix it :(
Thanks for the feedback tho :)

Very good game. Love graphics and mood. And I found a BUG :bug: Platforms got colliders before placing them, so you can jump to the end, without placing single platform :D Still very good entry ;)

I really liked the look of this. It lacked some polish here and there, like how slippery the ice platform was, and that you could bounce on the trampoline without placing it down. The idea was great as well, of placing platforms from a limited selection to get higher up. The only problem there was I had so many platforms to place even if I messed up I still was able to make it to the top. Great job!

I really like the graphics, sound and mood of the game. I had a hard time placing the platforms at times. Seems like you may not always have to place them either as with some I could just leave them on the cursor and lift the guy with it. Either way, it's gorgeous Check ours out when you get the chance https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/infinite-typer

Loved it, and on second level and unlocked the super secret wherein if you select a block but don't click to place it the collision is recognised so you can magic carpet up which I thought was awesome, probably not intended and I'm not regarding it as a bug just a super secret easter egg :)

Graphics suited theme. Mood + the audio was excellent. If you tie in a story with the play mechanics, the game-play wouldn't seem arbitrary. Maybe you can even find item in the cave in order to escape (make it part of the story). just a thought. cool entry.
