Pirate's Escape by BobbyTables

[raw]
made by BobbyTables for LD 40 (JAM)

Summary

After a day's plundering you must escape the Royal Navy and make it back to your secret cove with your cargo still intact! Each level you can expand your ship but be careful, the more weight you have the worse your speed. Use sails to counteract the weight of new guns and cargo. Avast matey! Go forth and flee honorably to escape with your life and booty!

Controls

Use WASD to move and Arrow Keys to Fire

Gameplay

The more cargo you bring back the more gold you earn but be careful cargo is heavy. Also, you earn 5g for every ship tile you destroy so don't slack on the cannons either :) Sails will decrease your speed and hull tiles are cheap ways to protect your more important investments. Pay attention to the weight, speed, and cargo in the top left hand corner as you build your ship. Make it to the objective marker with at least the minimum number of cargo for that level to win!

About

This is my second Unity game and Ludum Dare competition. I didn't optimize it at all, so it may occasionally lag (sorry!) on the later levels. I also have the artistic ability of a kindergartner so its just a mash up of what I could find on the unity store. You might be wondering why everyone is sailing under the same flag? A cynical mind might say (and be accurate) the programmer was lazy and forgot to add the pirate flag. But the intellectual would conclude the pirate just underwent an undercover mission and hence is flying under the flag of the Royal Navy. Hope you enjoy the game!

Change Log

1 - Fixed a bug where rocks would spawn too close to the player and some typos

2 - Made some performance improvements (primarily spreading out ship creation through multiple frames rather than instantaneous)

A lot of fun. I really liked building my own ship and running it through to the end. I will say that the lag was a bit much at times and the sails are really op. All in all, very fun and think this would make for a fun mobile game.

Thanks for the feedback @Windowwasher! If I had more time I would have looked into optimizing the ship spawning, but glad it still worked out!

I really liked this game! The ship building was a huge deal haha, I love any kind of building/customization, it did spike lag just a little bit, but not that bad. I really enjoyed playing this game, Great job!!

Glad you liked it @beanslasher! The lag was something I wish I could have fixed but 72 hours goes by quick.

Yeah my games physics were the part that I suffered the most, It is not bad, but it is not as smooth as I would like it to be @bobbytables

it's a pretty nice idea, but it needs a fair amount of polish and optimization before it's going anywhere.

Looooved building my own ship. I'm a big fan of having things like that. Balancing where you put things and what exactly you purchase added things. Game was a fun little game once I got into the actual gameplay as well. As you mentioned, there was lag occasionally, but it was mostly fine.

Really liked the concept, great on the controls wasd and arrow keys together, and the ability to create your ship feels quite good as well.
Although one point of improvement might be the camera movement behind the ship it feels a bit too "square" maybe a delay on the camera would be nice.

Anyway congrats, it is a really nice game

One of the best game I've played so far! Strategy and controlling are both needed, graphics is good, ande music is perfect for the game! Got 30000+ at last. Well done!

Awesome game! I really like the idea. It reminds me a lot of robocraft. The graphics are ok and the sound is really nice. One thing you could impove is the amount of avilable upgrades. I userd only forward pointing canons, sails and cargo. Maybe you could add rudders, which affect the turning speed. After a slow round with lots of cargo I was able to mount a quite large array of canons, which allowed me to chew even though the large enemies.

Maybe it could be fun, if you could replay levels but they were harder to beat. You could make levels where lots of small ships come from all sides and levels where only a hand full large ships with canons are fighting you. I'm thinking of very fast paced start -> get destroyed -> rearrange ship -> start again.

All in all very fun game! My final score was 51785 :)

Fun fun! Love these type of "building the character you play" games.

Wish you could rotate the camera with Q and E or similar. Some upgrade that affected the turning would be nice. The range on your cannons felt a bit OP sometimes.

Great feedback everyone!

@notpresident35 - Thanks! I agree, definitely needs some touch up; glad you like it!

@Asellio - Always fun to have your own customization options :)

@AFlatThrasher - Glad you have fun! The best part of this game is seeing all the different strategies folks came up with. Of course, I didn't have a good feel of balancing game mechanics so I'm sure some designs are OP but its cool to see the ships created.

@binaryunit - I'll have to try the camera idea, that makes sense and I agree that would definitely help out.

@stmatn - Great suggestions! I really like the upgrade idea and would love to do some sort of talent tree. More enemies would also be fun, someone mentioned maybe sea monsters too :)

@nekoballs - Rotating the cannons is a cool idea. If I did that, I would probably make some sort of delay to make it feel a bit more realistic. If I had time I would have liked to add crewman to the ship and maybe the more crewman you had the faster the rotation.

I had a ton of fun playing this. My ship got pretty OP, though. 5 rows of canons in the front, 10 canons each. I obliterated everything, which was cool.

Interestingly, seeing that opponent do not fire, I gone pacific way: using only crate and sail tiles. It changed a little the game as I feeled as the honest merchant (on his penissy ship) being assaulted by dreaded pirate-kamikazes. Congratulation for making a great game, I was surprised to finish it as I though that levels was generated.

Really fun! I didn't understand the ship customization screen at first, but once I got it, I liked being able to choose my loadout.

I tried to download the Windows Build but there is no exe file in it. Just DLLs for Mono. That DownGit thing sucks. I see the exe in the source code. I have to download it all now.
Wow this game is awesome! I love it so much! Great idea, great way of doing it! I can't wait to see more of this!

Actually very enjoyable! I gave you straight 5's in everything except mood where I'm giving you a 4. I think if you really nailed the look of the water it would have sealed the deal. Maybe even some bobbing up and down of the ships.
