Road Rules by Sky

[raw]
made by Sky for LD 41 (COMPO)

In this racing/stealth game, the goal is to drive back to your house as fast as possible... while also following the rules of the road. NO driving on the grass or hitting traffic cones along the way!

The web version of the game is playable but pretty laggy, I highly recommend downloading the game for a proper experience of it!

Loved the Rampage Mode!!
Things to improve: Controls of car felt like too slow i mean if i press left it took a while to go left

I always loved playing this way in Grand Theft Auto games
The problem with racing games is that if the controls aren't fun the whole game is not so good.
But making enjoyable control & physics in 48h is pretty hard so nice job! Nice art style too.

I like how polished the game felt. Just driving was a very pleasant experience. A thing I think would be good is an indicator of how the house looks or where it is: I felt lost the first couple attempts. Also I don't know if anyone else experienced this but the sound was very staticky (that's a word now) for me. Btw, liked the LD41 player number plate and the police number plates. :) Nice touch.

@LegionGames Thanks! I actually wanted to put in an arrow indicator pointing towards the house from the very beginning, but I was cutting it close on time and focused on polishing the game instead. (I still missed a few bugs :P, oh well).

It is fun drive the car, and game idea is good. I have no idea were the home is. But the graphics, music and controls is pretty good. Overall a pretty fun little LD game.

The game is very polished. The graphics is nice, the control works reasonably well and there's music!

@jk5000 Thank you! Sorry for not making it more clear where the house is, you have to actually park the car inside the garage on the other side of the map, as shown here:

Kinda beating myself up now for not making it more clear, but hey, exploration is fun too right? Plus if all else fails you can go into Rampage mode and find the garage that way, lol

Nice game. Just pretty laggy for me. Love how you can change it to rampage mode. Glad none of the people were home while I was on rampage mode!

@coatline Yeah, I tested the game on my laptop and the Windows build is still laggy (although not as bad as the Web version, lol). All the polygons in the scene are pretty gpu intensive

I really like this! These two genres are actually pretty interesting together, and the idea that almost everything was an obstacle made the game constantly interesting to play. Great job!

The graphics are great, the audio is good as well despite being laggy when accelerating. I found the turning to be a bit sensitive. Also, when you run into an object, like a fence, you should only get penalized once because the way it is now if you are still in contact with said fence your meter keeps going up. Overall it was a good game, fun to drive around.

@Jack Hipson Thanks for the feedback! And yeah, the multiple penalties problem is something I wanted to fix, but wasn't sure how. If I go through and make a more complete version of the game with bug fixes and such in the future I'll definitely make sure to fix that!

Love the music and graphics and the car drives well. The roads are perhaps a bit slim as they're a bit difficult to stay in (for me), but overall excellent compo submission!

Great game. Good design, effects. Maybe a little more info on where to go and a music change could be better for rampage mode. Add more depth to it and it will be awesome. Good job overall!

Fun game, I agree with some of the other comments that the car is sometimes hard to control. RAMPAGE was a nice addition as it gave me a chance to look at the level layout! Overall nice work.

For anyone else reading through these comments, I'll put a video of the pause glitch here:

All you have to do is get the car clipped inside an object a bit (the road barrier works quite well) and then pause and un-pause the game. The result is undeniably entertaining!

Good game. The graphics and audio were great. My only complaint is that when you go faster the controls get a bit sensitive. I liked that you added a rampage mode which was fun to just go wild in. Good job!

@mikedirl No lag on the web version? That's odd, but nice to hear! No matter which browser I use I get really poor audio and video compression issues...

That was fun to play! I like how the game looked and driving felt pretty responsive. I kept thinking I wouldnt make it around corners at full speed but I did :D I was confused about finding home, though I see you mentioned it in the comments. It might be nice to have the camera start out at home and then fly to the position behind the car. Overall a really nice job though! :)

This was pretty cool. You basically took the best part of GTA and made it's own game ;) I think I would've liked to be able to move the camera and to have some sort of arrow telling me the general direction I have to go, but aside from that I think this was a nice little entry. I like that you included a rampage mode and I think the license plate was a nice touch. Good work!

@morrilet Thanks for the feedback! You are right on the money with needing an arrow to point towards the house, that's probably my biggest regret is not getting that little extra functionality in the game (Followed closely by performance enhancements so it doesn't lag on weaker GPUs :P). But alas, I ran out of time
