Asteroid breaker by smiley

[raw]
made by smiley for LD 40 (JAM)

Mining energy crystals in the asteroid belt is a tough job. Crack open the rocks with your trusty collector in tow and attract the green gold. Use the navigator arrow to navigate back to the base to fill up the tanks and receive upgrades to your ship. Be careful to not load up on too many crystals in one go as the collector gets harder to control as it gets heavier.

You also need to watch out for the annoying wasp like space aliens coming to suck the fun (and life!) out of everything, but your base in particular. The more concentrated energy you have stored in your base, the worse the alien attacks get.

To win you need to fill up the base with energy. To lose you just have to let the aliens deplete the base of energy.

Instructions:

Rotate your ship with A and D.

Use W for thrust.

Space bar for boosting and braking*

*(after you have unlocked those upgrades).

At the left bottom of the screen you can see hints on what to do next in the game.

Remember not to load up on too many crystals in one go as the collector gets harder to control as it get heavier

Try the HTML5-version first. If it's lagging the Java desktop version is much smoother.

Soundtrack

The soundtrack is a special mix down of a song that Nicklas (smiley) has previously released on Spotify. Check the full song (and other ones) at https://open.spotify.com/album/7L4PZBI0z48SWIU9J5Xym2

Updates

6 dec: minor update with some performance fixes trying to get the game running smoother in a web browser. The .jar is still a lot smoother.

Enjoy!

Great music! I wish the thrust sound was quieter (or just an initial sound) so it didn't block out the music as much. I couldn't get the hang of steering the ship, but I still enjoyed trying due to the game's nice mood. It's cool how the enemy interaction is a non-violent tug-of-war. Overall, a nice and chill game!

It's a bit difficult to get how to control the ship, but after couple tries, it tuns out as a geart game! Thanks!

Controlling the ship was difficult but the mood and the graphics side of the game was great!

Really cool game although I found it a bit difficult to get used to controlling the ship.
The graphics are minimalistic but good looking.

This was a nice idea. I liked how the upgrades gave you some encouragement to try to get through the game. The controls were pretty hard though. It would have been a lot more enjoyable if they weren't are hard to use.

Controlling the wrecking ball was difficult but in a fun way. The webGL version stuttered a bit, but from experience I know that making webGL builds is hard . The soundtrack was very nice.

Nice space mining game!
Feedback: I think the controls are a bit too sluggish for my tastes. I don't mind acceleration buildup or indirect control over my character but this was just a bit too dragged out. I think if it was a bit more responsive then players would also feel more in control of their 'ball and chain' thing and more stimulated to try and really crush things with it. I would have loved to do that. The graphics are a tad minimal/simplistic too but they do work as a sort of homage to the classic Asteroid game and I do think it works for this kind of arcade / high score / stages type of game.

Nice game, it takes me a while to understand how to collect things and even that the red shapes were the enemies, but after a couple of minutes it has been funny. Graphics and music fit so well.

My playthrough (it has 3 videos, obs decided to cut off my recording for some reason):

https://youtu.be/Ez2wKM3HMJ0

Freaking frustrating, but for some reason it's just fun. I was confused where the base is located at first even though there's the triangle arrow showing the direction early on in the game. The triangle should show the direction better. Maybe even just convert it into an arrow.

Other than that I enjoyed the game very much. Frustrating, but enjoyable.

Oh yeah, the break should be introduced earlier I feel. Would've made the early parts less frustrating, but I don't know.

Getting the wrecking ball to move in the direction I wanted it to was pretty frustrating. Overall, I really like the twist on Asteroids. The music was great too.
