Physics Fighter by Vasco Freitas

[raw]
made by Vasco Freitas for LD 41 (COMPO)

A beat 'em up... physics game? Are these genres compatible? Give it a try and find out ;)

Made with Godot 3.0. Music made in Mixcraft 8 with electric guitar and MIDI keyboard. Also used Corel PaintShop Pro 2018 and Bfxr.

This was my first attempt at making a game with the Godot engine (I've previously used HaxeFlixel), so the first day was basically spent figuring out how things work (or why they wouldn't). So unfortunately this is not as polished as I'd like, but at least it's a playable, hopefully fun little game :)

Change log

  • Apr 23 3:30am: Noticed that the wrong key was given in the instructions for kicking (Y instead of X), so it was changed to X.
  • Apr 23 7:40pm: Removed debug terminal window.

That was fun, the platforming bit is hard when getting punched in the face

Interesting concept ^^ It works well, but after that, it is quite complicated to be up for this poor guy ^^
Keep coding :)

Have tested the Linux version, works absolutely fine (although debug lines spamming out into terminal I
ran it from). Nice concept and great music

well, windows worked fine too, except terminal, maybe an option to deactivate on godot?
In my opinion it would have been a little better to have a more progressive difficulty.

It's an interesting take on the theme!

@joqlepecheur Yeah, I couldn't find the option to disable the terminal at the time, but I found it now and will update the game soon (this simple fix should not be against the rules I think). Thanks!

@vasco-freitas I don't think it should be a problem, it won't change the game or even your code, it will just make it nicer for futer players ;)

This may just be the best game I've seen yet. The concept is very entertaining, it actually *has a soundtrack*, and the mechanics are intuitive and sensible. Reminds me of some of the better Flash games from back in the day, and that's a very good thing.

The big gang of guys at the end though... they get me every time.

Nice job! I can certainly see this being a thing, once properly expanded.

Really nice game I love the songs and the physics ! I wasn't able to go behind the moving plates (I kept falling there xD) I definitely gonna play later to finish this level ;)

damn it is hard getting onto those platforms. fun concept though and probably played it longer than I should have :) Great work

Ha, this is great! The controls are terrible in a good way, and I like how the character looks.

(BTW, in comments to my game you said it didn't start for you. I fixed it and pinged you, not sure if you got a notification.)

The game idea is good and it overall fun to game to play. The best part of this game was the amazing music.

It was quite hard, but made me laugh and had a good blast for the 5 minutes I played!! I liked the physics based tactics, such as blocking enemies with corpses, climbing on enemies for height, and jumping off balance platform with enemies on it, and leaving them to topple to their death below! Would have benefited from a HP indicator perhaps to help you know when you're nearing death. Good job!

I agree with honest dan above, I think you managed to do a lot with the physics aspect of the game but should probably had a health bar.

@honest-dan @niterich Yes I completely agree, the health bar was the next thing on my to-do list, but I ran out of time :( Thanks!

Definitely needs a health bar for the player at least. Also would've been nice if I could launch enemies or something by kicking them (possibly into environmental hazards :P)

The controls felt good, maybe could've used some tighter constraints on the player to keep him from falling over so easily, but being able to mash the punch button was actually pretty satisfying. Also since there's no way to block, you're pretty much doomed. A kill counter would at least show you how far you got.

Overall though it was pretty satisfying to play. If you keep working on this, I think you could turn it into a fun little brawler. Good job!

@ale @lumos Thank you! Regarding expanding the game, I am actually considering this. The physics can definitely be improved, different moves can be added (blocking, crouched attacks, picking up enemies), and various physics-based obstacles/puzzles. It is also a really fun game to work on :)

A lot of fun! Never really manage to make it past the first area (kept falling to my doom), but was thoroughly amused the whole time anyway.

This was really fun! The physics are great and so are the animations! I wish the level design was a little more interesting, but I can definitely relate to running out of time (even more so with a new engine, yikes!). I would definitely play more of this

I liked the use of the physics model and it was fun to play. It would have been nice to have scores and a win state but I guess you ran short of time. Thanks for this nice game! I guess you demonstrated that there is no incompatibility between physics and a good punch up :)

This is ridiculous in the best possible sense! *Really* liked to play it! It lacks some polishing, as you said (like, how much energy do I still have?) and is short. But other than that, a very interesting concept that worked well. Graphics are nice enough (probably better than "nice enough", actually), the animation is pretty good, the music is great and fits well into the game. Great job!

This game is really fun! I think I got to like 10 people killed before I got killed but this is some pretty good stuff.
