Think Hockey by RilleP

[raw]
made by RilleP for LD 41 (COMPO)

This is a turn-based ice hockey game. Featuring splitscreen multiplayer and vs ai single player.

Every team can move up to 2 players every turn. Players must have atleast one move point to be able to move or shoot. If a player moves into an opposing player a tackle is performed, stunning the hit player if the tackling player have enough move points (1), otherwise the tackle backfires.

A game is atleast 60 turns long and the team with the most score will win.

Be nice to the AI player! It didn't get all the love that it required.

Controls:

Left mouse button:

-Select players

-Shoot if selected player has the puck!

Right mouse button:

-Move selected player

-The goalie can move up or down by clicking over/under him

Pretty good, however it's too easy to get the puck and then immediatly lose it.

Never thought I will put so many brain power into a hockey game...Great use of the theme! Well done.
Although I only scored one time, it's sooo hard!!

Very good idea, as I love hockey :) I had some trouble with the UI, ending my turn didn't always work, and the game got stuck after the AI goalkeeper had the puck, I got a message "you have to shoot with the goalie" and the AI stopped responding. Otherwise very nice game!

Really awesome idea! Bit challenging to take the puck, but an interesting take on hockey! Good job

I got stuck at a point where I couldn't move any of my players and the End Turn button refused to work.

Pretty fun game! With some balancing it could have some real potential. In this version it is a bit too easy to steal the puck which leads to back and forth going in the middle zone. If we think about hockey as a game, I would try to balance this more towards direction which would generate more shots towards the goal.

But I enjoyed it, thanks!

This is really fun, it took me some time to get the hang of it, but you have a great little party game here! It would be nice to have a button to cycle through the players, sometimes it's hard to select them if the clump together really close, especially near the goal.

Turn-based hockey is a game design challenge I've been interested in for a while, and this seems like a really good start but I'm honestly confused about how to shoot! It also seems like there's no passing in this, right? (No passing might be a good balance decision, though.)

This game is frustrating! I feel like it could be balanced better because it gets to a point where the puck just stays in the middle and bounces around from person to person. Overall it was a really fun game

I think sport games and turn based controls are not so incompatible. This is an example how is possible to make a good sport game with this mechanical. With some polishment and game design, this game have a lot potencial

Reached the point I could only move the goalie. Nice idea and implementation, but requires some balancing. Keep up the good work.

Great! Was a little tricky to understand at first but I ended up having loads of fun and the AI proved just challenging enough for the perfectly balanced experience. I pulled through right at the end and won 3-2!

A little crowd noise and this would have been perfect. Maybe some voice over when actions occur like red player tackles blue player or blue player shoots and scores! Like other people mentioned sometimes ending the turn didnt work

Great idea, and good execution. The game indeed requires a bit more balancing, with the puck changing team a little too often to make the match as exciting as it could be. The sound and the graphics do the job, and the UI is quite clear. Maybe make the retrieving of the stamina a bit shorter to that the player has more possibilities during the whole match. And I personally found the AI acceptable for a 48h-developed game !

This is excellent. Best game I've played so far. I used to love Subbuteo, you can get some real tactical depth with turn based team games. At first I found it quite tricky, not being able to tackle then pass in the same turn, but quickly worked out strategy to tackle and then block with other players. Very satisfying!

Nice game although the ai froze when it fired at the post, so I had to restart. :( Other than that it was a good and fleshed out game with some cool sound effects!

This is great! There is tons of depth and complexity here, especially for 48 hours. I don't know how you did it. Maybe I just suck, but the AI seemed pretty smart to me. Even going as far as passing backwards to a far away defenseman who had a clear shooting lane, and scored! I had to add that to my playbook after I saw it.

Just awesome!

Not really incompatible genres for me, I actually find it compatible and enjoying. I think most LD games are played by one person so I would focus more on the AI next time because I found it pretty easy to exploit (for example, nobody has the puck and it could not reach it with one move so it started moving all his player to the front). In my case, the AI froze, leading to a rage quit on my side.

Pretty cool idea. I've not played a turn-based sports game before, but, I think this game definitely shows that the concept could work. About the only thing that could immerse me further into the game is if there was some awesome hockey rink organ music rocking in the background. Great job!

Tricky to get the hang of but a solid entry here. Nice work. The stealing feels satisfying and checking the other team down does too!

Cool game! It took a while to get used to it, but I liked a lot that all attacks depend on where the player is facing. Nice touch!

I managed to play it 2 player, and it worked out pretty good. We did have a few times where everyone was out of moves and sort of paralyzed, but they eventually snapped out of it. Nice job!
