Asteroid Miner by Roka Josh

[raw]
made by Roka Josh for LD 39 (JAM)

A game about blasting open asteroids with a laser, in order to get the gems inside to become the richest person in the galaxy! Watch out however, as pesky space pirates have heard of your wealth and are out to stop you in your tracks. Utilise Power Packs and Shield Power Ups from some asteroids in order to gain an advantage and become the wealthiest of all! This is our second jam ever, and it was a really good theme to make a game around!

The music isn't too loud :) Quite good, feels smooth. The only real issue I had was that the menus didn't fit properly on my screen. The sides were cut off.

Really brought me back to asteroids, at first I was wasting all my energy on the stars and before I knew I was at a score of $500,000.

@dragonzbw, thanks for your feedback, it was an issue with the ui, as I set it to only scale to 16:9 monitors, so sorry about that. Thanks for the kind words though!

@lcmw-spud Glad to see we hit the nostalgia of asteroids, it was a heavy inspiration, thanks for your comment and thanks for checking out our game.

Great arcade style space shooter. Really liked the music (nice and catchy) and the movement mechanics were beautifully smooth.

Nice game !! Good job with the parallax effect. Also, great idea to destroy the bonus/minerals if we shoot on them, it makes us play more carefully. The music fits the gameplay, seriously, for a LD game, it's perfectly done. I know by experience (LD38 :P) that it's not easy to create that kind of game during a jam. Amazing job !

Nice game, fluid controls and great music. I accidentally destroyed precious minerals on several occasions, but that's really interesting gameplay element, so no objections. Good job!

Fun game. The controls work very well, and the art of the asteroid, ships and itens are adorable . Nice job.

The controls were very simple but they felt great and easy to grasp. The game is a bit simplistic and repetitive, but it's OK.

I also liked the fact that you can destroy the collectibles. It keeps the player from firing like crazy and forces them to be more strategic.

This is a pretty interesting addition to the old asteroids. The graphics were nice and clean, and the music was good and overall a nice fit. I think a natural progression for this game would be to have some form of in-game store where you can exchange your currency for upgrades. That might be a good idea if you choose to continue developing this.

I did have a couple of issues with the game though: the first is the main menu being cut off on my MacBook, regardless of which resolution I picked. I saw someone else had the same problem. The game itself was playable anyway, so in the end it wasn't a big deal. The second is the speed of enemy ships. They come at you so fast that there's basically no chance to react, track them and shoot them down, which feels a bit unfair.

Other than that, really great job!

@frogcheese Thanks for playing our game, I'm glad you liked it! We are continuing to make this game afterwards, and you can follow us on twitter to see developments. Upgrades is something we have planned, and the UI is a noted bug which is already being worked on. Thanks very much!

Feels like a mix between Asteroids and Super Stardust here! :P The game looks pretty nice and the sounds do fit the style you've chosen here, but I think some more balancing, specially on how the game advances would be nice.

Also, mouse controls for this kinda don't fit well (for me). Having a twin-stick-like controller would be better here. And, on the main menu, when you click on Help, it would be nice to have an overlay, indicating that you can't click on some buttons, as all buttons have the same colour.

Nice job, overall! ;)

This felt really nice to play. It's actually fairly similar to my game . The music and sound effects were great, the graphics looked nice, and it plays well. Good job!
