Cute graphics and story + polished overall = a solid entry.
By the way: what engine/framework are you using?

@vilix64 Hello, Thank you very much for playing my game. I'm using AGS (Adventure Game Studio). It's really easy for creating adventure games. If you are interested I can really recommend :)

I really digged the art, and with the small noises etc, there is a nice ambiant feel.

Context interface was lingering a bit too much, and I feel the character could have walked faster.
I think to associate the genres a bit more, it would have been awesome to have a small card fight every time you grab a new card !

Unfortunately my adventure skills are a bit poor, but that's not the game's fault, the few enigmas I did solve were satisfying.

Overall quality is good, a solid entry :)

@joqlepecheur Hello, thanks a lot for playing Cartenstein. I wanted to implement card fights since the very beginning, but then I realized, it was rather impossible (for me) to code. The main concept was to collect them, and playing them was just an option to have more fun. Maybe I'll implement playing them later in post-release. :)

I did really like the artstyle and nice combination of adventure and deckbuilding.

I like the style and the riddles are well written. Good job!

I really like the style you went with. It's very charming. You also combined the two genres very well, they create a cool new experience. The only remotely negative thing I have about the game is the lack of erotic section reading. ;)

In all seriousness, though, Great Job! =)

Thats a cool little quest. Although I would really appreciate some walkthrough since I suck at riddles and that door at the end looks kinda intriguing. Got stuck at 8 cards, oh well :D

The game looks quite decent in art department and ambient creates cool creepy atmosphere. Great job on this one :)

@spelos Haha, thanks for an awesome review. Well, Hemlock is a well behaved gentleman, he can't read that stuff! I'm glad you liked it :-)

Nice little game, overall every thing seemed right, and nothing out of place, though some text from the start menu didn't disapear after I pressed play, cause I didn't know how to get rid of it! I liked the riddles!

Great style, art and ambient sound. Probably the most polished game I've played so far. Good job!

I loved the artstyle. Sadly I got stuck on 9 cards. I couldn't find the rare card for Urgel. Nice game though!

Really great artwork and mood. You should try a 3DS game called "Attack of the Friday Monsters", which has a similar card-game sidequest, and play all your character's friends to become their boss!

I'm an adventure gamer from way back, so I loved this one. And I'm embarrassed to say I haven't been able to finish it yet (stuck on 8 cards). But I'm going to go back and try again later! The 8-bit graphic style isn't one I personally like, but you did it very well, and it was easy to see what everything was.

What a howl at the start! That's quite the set of pipes you've got there. :)

Great art! It was clearly done in a bit of a rush but the aesthetic definitely works. And the rhyming dialogue was excellent!

Very cool entry! I am very impressed with this setting, the graphics and sound are just great.

Also a big compliment for creating a game that can still be run on 32 bit Windows XP. I read that you used AGS, way better for deployment than Unity! :-)

I really love the feel of this game, the mood is very well designed.

There are some minor bugs, e.g. when I give the card to Urgel, it is still selected or when I click on something while looking at a book, the book does not disappear but there are all very minor things.

Unfortunately I could not solve the puzzles, I thought the thing that lets use see was either sun, sunlight, sunshine or eyes but I was wrong :-)

Overall a very great entry! Nice job, keep up the good work!

I had a great time playing this game! I even managed to collect all 12 cards :)
Awesome rhymes! They were all very fun to read! Nice pixel-art.
I figured out that you can right-click on a card to get a short rhyme for it, at the very end of my play-through, I'm really glad that I didn't miss out on that!

I have one question though:
What was the point of the _"Red, blue, purple or mint [...]"_ clue? I wasn't able to figure out what that clue meant.

Overall, I really enjoyed playing this game! Great entry!

@NoahRo Thanks for playing my game, I'm glad you liked it. The rhymes were rather basic, but I still wanted to use them for the sake of mysterious mood. Now I will spoil the note hint for you:

!!!! SPOILER ALERT !!!!!

Those colours represent the colours of the books. Hence, "Red (book), blue (book)... one of them gives you a hint."
It's basically saying that if you check out the library it will help you with the puzzles :)

Cool game. I couldn't figure out the solution to the riddle (needed to watch the video for that one). I was trying things like sun, sunshine, eyes etc.
But overall pretty good. The writing is really cool.
Well done.

Nice game guys. I loved the chicken card.

I couldn't exit the game once I entered tho... Maybe it's a problem on my part

Keep up the great work!

@DUUUUDE Thanks for the review. That's ONE OF THE MANY REASONS why I recommend to play it in the window (so you can X the window). I forgot to implement a quit button, and I don't want to make any changes until the competition ends. I'm huge anti-fan of "Post-uploads" during LD.

Cool game! Super sprite pixel graphics. It remind me of hours playing when I was a kid. If I would add something, it would be an ability to double click to run. Moving around between room seems slow sometimes. The atmosphere was very fitting too.

I forget I really enjoy this type of games! Thank you, for reminding!:D And the man at the beginining gave me idea, when he told "Hurry up". Multiplayer card game with seeking cards before playing them, like in Battle Royal would be interesting XD

This was really enjoyable! The graphics are good, the sound effects were good, the rhymes are a little iffy in places but they work well with the cryptic feel of the game. I could only find 10 cards in the end but that was enough to win. Sargan's riddle is gonna be bugging me now :P

It's awesome. Looking forward for longer version of the game. But I'd be happy if you add a button to turn sounds off. The sound is nice but it some times crashes while alt-tabing.

This looked amazing. I think i had 11/12 cards, and the guy just let me leave. HA! i figured out the riddles. I thought that was really cool. :D thanks for making such a nice entry. Only thing i wish could have been better would have been a SPRINT button. Walking around very slow-like is annoying when you have to go all the way back to see if you missed anything (which i did). cool stuff man. cool stuff.

Cool game, nicely done !

My only complain is that I was expecting to use the cards at some point in a fight, since it's the whole point of trading card games, so imo the theme aren't really combined, since collecting stuff is a classic in point n click.

Execept from that minor point the ambiant sound is cool and the riddle very well writen.

Nice atmospheres and puzzles! I was able to get all 12 cards albeit not really understanding the 'hint' note.

I share the same sentiments with @tbaudon towards the use of theme, It doesn't really get expressed very clearly since it's missing any fights, which is something I actually expected at the end (and would've been a pretty damn good way to end the game too).

It is a solid adventure game overall, good work!

@Devastus @TBaudon Thank a lot for the reviews, guys, I really appreciate it. I know it is a shame that I couldnt implement the fighting, but the only reason it's missing is simply technical and practical. Of course it was planned from the very beginning :-)

The game's setting and story are quite nice. It captures the mystery and excitement I felt when I did collectible card games as a kid. I like that your progress is always visible in the top left, and that you allow finishing the game with only 10/12. I wish you walked faster across the rooms, and I thought the skeleton card behind the curtains was just in a random spot, I only found it by clicking randomly everywhere. Overall good game!

I loved the atmosphere of this game, the whole thing (graphics, sound, story) is consistent. The riddles were fun and I loved the rhymes, very well written ! I am fond of collecting things and managed to find all the cards, even though some of them are quite well hidden (the fireball) ! Good job ! It needs and exit button inside the game though.

This is a great game. I like the chasing of the cards to become the master and the riddles are well designed. If you pay attention you might find the 12 cards. The audio set the mood very well and the pixel art is nice. Good job!
