Overdosed! by Madbeagle

[raw]
made by Madbeagle for LD 40 (COMPO)

You are an over-worked nurse in an under-staffed hospital - mistakes are bound to happen! Make sure you give the right medication and dose to the right patients, or things could spiral out of control very quickly.

Collect the right coloured medication, stand in the box to the RIGHT of each bed, assess the required dose versus the meter and click away, PGA Tour Golf style!

Controls

  • Movement: Arrow Keys
  • Administer Treatment: Space or Left Mouse Button (when standing in box to right of patient).

Conditions

  • Pain (Blue bar, max dose 10ml)
  • Infection (Orange bar, max dose 15ml)
  • Blood Loss (Red bar, max dose 50 units)
  • Cardiac Arrest (Green heart, max dose 200 joules)

Administer Treatment

  • Collect the necessary equipment from the colour-coded boxes on the wall
  • The indicator above your head will change colour.
  • Walk next to the patient on the right of their bed.
  • Check the required dose on the clipboard (Pain - blue, Infection - orange) or next to the heart (Blood - red, Arrest - green)
  • Click to start the treatment meter.
  • Click again to stop the meter at the required level;
  • Click a third time as close to the thick bar at the beginning as possible to administer a pain-free injection.

Pitfalls

  • If a patient's heart rate rises above 124, they will enter cardiac arrest and require the Defibrilator.
  • Once a patient enter's cardiac arrest or has full blood loss, you have 30 seconds to save them.
  • Leaving a patient untreated with a full bar raises their heart rate.
  • Overdosing will raise a patient's heart rate and lengthen their recovery.
  • Underdosing will do the same but to a lesser extent.
  • Missing the third click will cause a sloppy painful injection, increase heart rate and may lead to blood loss.

Update

Fixed a few game-breaking bugs and improved the balance a little while I was there. It can get quite hectic after the first few patients!

I like the game idea, I couldn't quite understand how the joules in the defibrillator worked. But nice in general, congrats!

Hey, thanks - exactly the same as the other treatments, the amount required will be shown in the green triangle next to the heart. For blood transfusions the amount is shown in the red blood drop next to the heart. I wanted to make it more clear but ran out of time!

Today I learned why I would make a terrible nurse.

I'm trying to play this now! It's a little hard to grasp how things work from the intro screen, but I like the idea a lot and it's refreshing to see a game that doesn't quite look most of the others. Restart button might help?

EDIT: Finally getting the hang of it, and I really like the moving treatment bar - the units you're giving aren't clear with the defibrillator (I think it's x% of 200?) but it's really fun. Thanks for making this!

Interesting idea. could be a nice little plate spinning type game with some more polish. I must say I have no idea how much you are meant to give each patient, its not really clear how you decide what percentage dose to give each one?

Cool idea. A little confusing and unpolished, but a creative and fun experience.

If it's pain (blue) or infection (orange) medicine, the amount is shown on the clipboard. The bar shows the maximum value, so you have to do quite mental arithmetic to figure out roughly where to stop the bar.

For blood (red) and defib (green), the values required are shown next to the green heart.

Pretty fun game man, I'd love to see a more fleshed out version with some better graphics.

Interesting idea. It's really confusing at the start, had to read the description twice to understand it a little. It meshes elements of precision, management and randomness really well and it plays okay.

Seemed like I was only able to treat some patients from one side, also it would be great if the color indicator changed the color of the injection at the top, or something more indicative.

Really cool game overall, good job!

Yeah I'd have liked to change the indicator, just ran out of time. It's intentional you're only allowed to treat patients from their right hand side, by standing in the box next to their bed.

@leof - The graphics look better on desktop build, were you playing WebGL?

Great concept! It took long to understand that the objective is not heal them, but keep alive while they are in the room, but when I did it, it was very funny (and difficult xD).

Was also hoping to have the syringe plunge in and out but didn't have time for that either - all the pieces are there just not hooked up!

Jesus this is hard...Needed a few tries to actually figure out how to give treatment xD

Though I say that, I love the game, the sound effects are funny, even though the killing the patients is not... (are you trying to make me laugh and cry at the same time? Shame!)

In my opinion, you nailed it, would love to play a more polished version! So I can kill more people...

Yeah, it's funny how obvious the mechanics are when you developed them! Trying to get that across without a day to make a tutorial section is tricky! :-$

Cool game!

It was hard to figure out how to cure them in the beginning.

OMG! This was way to hard and stressful for me, glad I'm not in this line of business! ;) Really liked the gfx but figuring out how to cure took a bit too long (for me anyway).

With your game and ours, a clinic overcooked kinda needs to become a real thing, right? ;)

As you can see by the likeness of our two games, you can pretty much tell that I really like your interpretation of the theme. :) The fuller your hospital gets, the more stressed I got as a player, so it works out great.

The introduction screen was a bit overwhelming at first, which led to me loosing my first round of the game quite quickly, but once I understood the gameplay mechanic behind it, the game flow got really smooth and satisfying to play.

The music and graphics are nice, and especially your sound-effects have a great deal of charme. It would have been cool, though, if the music got a bit more intense, once a patient dies, but that's just nitpicking.

Also, knowing that this is a submission for the Compo, the result is really impressive. Great game!

Yeah I really wanted to have a load of original music this time, but three hours salvaging a broken Unity project put paid to that!

I think the music is incredible and fits the environment of a medical ward. I like how the game play uses mental math, as it is a unique idea and makes a person feel like they are doing themselves good by playing the game. I have learned that I would make a horrible doctor based on my performance of the game

That's a really cool game (and I can't agree more about the political message behind it).
The only little issue I saw in the game is that it's sometimes hard to know when you can start the medication process (especially when you failed a treatement and you want to try again).

Yeah, there is a 4-5 second delay before you can go back to the same patient to do more treatment. Ran out of time to put anything in to indicate this.

Nice game! Looks very pretty, works well in the browser. Bit hard to grasp the controls and how the treatment should be done. Music is nice and controls work fine. Well done for a Compo game!

Great entry, just needs a bit of polish and maybe a tutorial. Glad I stuck it through and figured out how to play, because it was loads of fun once I did.

This game is really interesting. It took me some time to figure out what to do, but I had a lot of fun nonetheless.

Challenging game! I included it in my Ludum Dare 40 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBdKV67omDA
