It's nice concept & Level is greatly design
You can add different mechanics as @ursagames said like
1) Policemen shoots automatics to nearby zombies. so it's more like RTS placing unit is important.
2) Add checkpoints like you can clear some path by placing unit in RTS mode and than go to some part of map in FPS mode. (if FPS player die you need to send other Player to save him)
3) (This is just idea come to my mind) Similar to overwatch style match where 2 teams. first we need to setup defence in RTS style mode and then select one player to go other player base and capture the flag. etc. (there will be so many combination can happen like you do not need to setup defence you just need to select all players and send them to attack in RTS mode)(while you need more accuracy and fast movement you can select one character and control in FPS mode)
Very good work you did there in a time so short and I applaud you for it.
I thought of another way you could blend these two genres which is to put some strategically-placed turrets and you move your characters there and then switch to FPS to use the turret. This way you will limit the FPS to the turret positions and the RTS everywhere else.
- Specific weapons for each policeman (sniper, sub-machine etc...)
- An ability to switch directly between policemen in FPS mode (with a camera zoomin/out to preserve the RTS atmosphere)
- It could useful to know where are the others policemen (with little arrows on the screen sides) + a state when a policeman is hit by a zombie or in danger.
- More advantages to use the RTS mode: today you can move simultaneously multiple units. What if you can move them faster in RTS mode? Or perhaps you can heal one of them (with a cooldown for example?)
Anyway good job! :)
There were some annoying things:
* The sound of the zombies (I think) is playing to often. Maybe add 2 or 3 more sounds and play them at random intervals.
* I don't see a good use of the RTS Mode. You can move all the policemen but that's it. Maybe some things like buildings or factories (for example a barrack for more policemen) would make the game more interesting.
* Single selecting a policeman is very hard, especially if you moved them all once to a position so they are almost at the same position. Just use the selection box only when the mouse is moved over a threshold. If not, select the entity under the cursor directly.
If you're interested, we also made a RTS FPS mix: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/placeholder-game
Maybe you want to check it out. In our case, the game is completely first person and also lacks some RTS features but I'm interested about whats your opinion about our game.
I'm sure you've got a lot of ideas on how to implement the RTS side, too. Giving the characters more to do when in RTS mode, instead of now where you can just use a single guy to mow down zombies.
Perhaps a shortcut, like space bar, when a unit is being hurt to snap into FPS for that unit so that we can shoot quicker. Also, not sure if this was implemented or not but while in FPS allow to shoot different body parts to cause different amount of damages. Thus allowing the idea that while in RTS mode the units will auto attack the "body" which takes longer to kill but then I can switch to FPS and shoot the head for an instant kill. That might be fun and makes the game more interesting. Nice work
