Cursed Gold by ryusui

[raw]
made by ryusui for LD 40 (JAM)

For centuries, Idyllia was a land of peace and prosperity...and then came the Hedon-Kings.

No one knew what madness took the royal family of Idyllia, but their depravity and debauchery knew no limits. All manner of disgusting and vile act was committed within their ostentatious palace, and the commonfolk were taxed brutally - in every imaginable respect - to fuel their neverending orgy of wicked excess. Finally, the people revolted against their revolting rulers, who blasphemously called upon the gods themselves to defend their reign. The gods responded with fire and brimstone - against the hated Hedon-Kings. Their palace was reduced to a smoldering crater, the Hedon-Kings themselves presumed exterminated by divine fury...and yet the taint of their influence remained, seeping into the land, festering like a cancer. Today, Idyllia is a forsaken land, nearly abandoned...yet hope is not lost.

You are a blessed champion of the gods, tasked with plumbing the depths of the Hedon-Kings' surviving crypt, and ridding the world of their curse once and for all. Collect the corrupted treasures and bring them to the holy totems for purification, but be warned: the curse will take you if you are not careful, leaving you at the mercy of the horrifying creatures which have emerged in the nether depths!

Gamepad and keyboard supported. Arrow keys/D-pad/analog stick to move, Z/A to fire.

OMG, could play this for hours! If I wasn't trying to review a zillion other games. Stellar work for a solo jam, great level design, great action feel. A pure and effective take on the theme.

This had a nice nintendo vibe to it. I died pretty horribly on my first few attemnpts, but then adopted a strategy of avoidance instead of fighting monsters and made it way further.

I wish there was a reason to kill the monsters, XP, coins, something. Running around them was way simpler for most of the game.

The style was good and consistent, and the gameplay was pretty intuitive, so all in all that's a successful entry and above many of the others!

Thanks for making it!

Fun and engaging! I loved the art style and the straightforward gameplay. Very addicting. My only nitpick is that I'm not personally a found of repetitive sounds in the background. But overall, awesome entry! Loved the game and plan to play it again.

This was a really great game! I found myself gaming the system by killing the enemies, and then collecting coins. I wish there was an incentive to not do that. Still, great game! I love how the different rooms get dark when you leave them.

Great game! I do wish that the "curse %" was replaced with "gold until exit" or something like that, I didn't want to keep track of how much each gold coin was worth as I played :P

@josefnpat: A friend of mine stumbled upon the same solution. XD Funnily enough, one big reason rooms go dark when you leave them is that there was originally going to be a chance that enemies would respawn, with a greater chance the more cursed you are. Maybe I'll implement that in a post-Jam version.

@csdoescs: TBH, the reason it's a percentage is because I didn't want it to be obvious precisely how many coins you need on each floor. ^_^; It might've been wiser to use a bar gauge for that, come to think of it.

Really, really like the dull sound you used for gunfire. And the character animation, too - it looks especially right when you're carrying a bunch of gold. It's really nice to encounter what feels like a well-executed game with a scope that's right for a 72-hour jam. Nice!

I agree with michaelsonbritt haha, I could play this for hours on out! This is a well constructed game, the audio could use a little improvement but it is not bad at all! I really like this game, good ratings from me haha :)

It took me a while to figure out the mechanics of cursed coins and curse purging. Like coins is my curse and curse% is level curse. I like how levels and curses feed into each other.
But it is always best to either pick coins or kill mobs first, never both together. I wish the dungeon was a bit more fleshed out, or Zelda-like one room scrolling maybe plus a map so it looks less uniform...

Some nicely polished game here, liked the retro feel! The hands reminded me of the hands in zelda games which would drag you out of the dungeon :)

After a while I realized that you gain exp by collecting coins and not killing enemies and started to run around instead of killing any enemies. Don't know if that was intention of the game but it seemed to work pretty well.

This is cool! I like the look of the game, simple but sets a tone. A bit Master System-esque. The random rooms were neat -- though I had one funny bug where the enemies spawned in the walls -- makes it very re-playable. The music is a bit too repetitive though, I think I would have gone with a more ambient track, like a few low, rumbling notes just to set the mood. But, minor nitpick. I had fun playing, good work on this!

Good job on this game! The graphics and sound effects work well to create a nice retro rogue-like. I like it!

@blubberquark Well, dang. I'm gonna have to take that apart and see how you did that. XD

Nice game, but a bit repetitive,
And finally you kill monsters first, then take gold, maybe you have to found something to prevent that...
(also sometimes, a monster was blocked in wall when I entered in a room and I couldn't fire..)
