Between Dimensions by lautregars

made by lautregars for LD 41 (COMPO)

Between Dimensions is a game about a 2D platformer hero who gets revealed that he lives in a fake world from an amateur game.

Live the first-person experience of being a little platform hero in a naive, pico-8 palette colored world.

Your objective : Getting to the end of the level alive ,then bitchslap the dude who revealed you the truth.

Note : The game's a little hard, so don't be afraid to mash all the controls to do sick moves !

Note 2 : Leave me a comment ! Feedbacks are alot appreciated !

/!\ This game features : /!\

*Alternative views between first-person and 2d plat-former : You'll see that being a platformer hero aint as easy as it seems... * But luckily enough, you can get a temporary control over the camera ! Use it to pass some hard stages of the level ! Ouais1.gif

Dash ! Get untouchable during a short lapse of time to escape the enemies... And their bullets ! ouais2.gif

Walljump ! Fell free like a bird... Until you hit the ground. Mash that jump button and be careful with your landings ! allezeeeee.gif

So,

CONTROLS

Arrow Keys / WASD to Move

Space / Keypad_0 to Jump, Double Jump, Wall Jump

Left Click / Keypad_. to Dash, Dashing makes you untouchable during a small amount of time, while giving you an impulsion in your last movement's direction.

Right Click / Right Ctrl to change the camera side. It's pretty much the core of the idea.

R to reload the level, if you feel like your run is spoiled you can press R and restart immediatly.

No matter the pain you feel and how desatured your vision is, the 2D Camera will still watch you. eye.gif

My Second LD - Still a Compo Game :

I made a level in a way that the player can have a challenging experience ; the first minutes of gameplay on first person are really harsh, but after a li'l of playing it begins to be more fluid.

I'll hope some of you like this small gamexperiment , if you feel like speedrunning remember to post the farthest point you saw, or even, if you achieve it, the final run time you got after winning !

The theme didn't pleased me much, so I tried things that I found interesting. Here a classic idea : Seeing what our plat-former heroes see. I wanted to do something slightly more narrative, with the hero doing voice comments on the fakeness or the awkardness of the unity scene, etc etc. Something meta.

To virtual characters, the players are plain ol' voyeurs. Now you know what our platformer heroes see when they look at the camera.

But as expected I struggled to do simple things as detecting a collision so here I am, with a Sound Design and musics made 2 hours before the end of the jam :D

In the end, I achieved only a part of my intentions : Doing a game with a Truman-show-side, by making a classic, basic, naive platformer on one side, and then on FPS we can see that all of the world is fake, the landscape is just a plane on the background, etc etc. I wanted to add even more of that side in my game, by showing shadows of the background props on the sky, making the character rant about his fake world, and making pseudo-philosophical statements about our perception our reality and the dimension of choice, etc etc.

...At the end I have, like, 50% of my scope : But I learned 1 or 2 things during the making of it so I guess that's okay. Okay, who wanna play ?

PS : Sorry fur bad englanch : did not sleep much recently. :D

Actually a lot better than you are saying in the description ! Could use another scene as tutorial to get how the game works but once you do it's really fun ! Well played especially alone !

I think it's great how you've managed to fit a platformer and an FPS into a browser game. It was a little tricky to work out why I would need to be in first person view at all at first, but then I saw where you were going with it. Really good work, even though I was terrible at it!

Nice concept, great music ! I think you should ve set up the controls like this : wasd/zqsd to move, left ctrl to switch view. Moreover, I think you should ve start by a "friendly zone" to explain the controls, because my Controlers goes in FPS mode before I read all.

But god, doing all this work alone, you are so crazy dude ! Good job, that's a nice entry :)

Really cool! I was going to complain that it's hard to know sometimes what's below you, but then I remembered maybe I should use first person mode to check first, which actually gives it more of a purpose.

@silkworm_sweatshop Yep, I was really short on time so I couldn't do a proper tutorial with controls & gameplay tips, like mandatory double-jumps, or trying to switch cameras frequently to get past hard stages... I hop you still appreciated the idea :)

This is actually really neat! The take on the theme is super cool. Great execution, super nice graphics and music especially taking into account you made this in 48 hours!

@sndr Thank you ! yeah, it was a constant rush, I managed my time really well on the graphs, sounds, was efficient and all, but I lost some on pure game mechanics.

Pretty nice game, as you said it's difficult but i love the concept to switch 2D/3D, the eye is verry creepy !
Nice musics and graphics too

Dang, you weren't kidding about this being difficult, but that's what makes it so fun! The 2d/3d stuff is awesome! Only problem I had was that the up/down arrow keys also controlled left and right in 2d mode, and that through me off a bit. Really cool concept I enjoyed it. Good job!

Very good graphics and music.
Very interesting is the concept of switching between dimensions.

Apparently "restart" does not work very well (at least not in my Firefox).

@gustavo.christino Well,I only tested the browser version on Chrome. Even if the game's have much few problems with the downloadable version.

Edit : Yeah, apparently, restart by pressing on R still works well on the downloadable version, and even on newgrounds on Chrome. weird

Nice work! The idea is pretty cool, and I like that the game forces you to switch between the two in more ways than one. The switch is enforced by the timer, but there are also situations where it's in your best interest to go 2d or 3d. This duality was well designed.

The air-control physics felt a little strange. It felt like once my character was in the air, I didn't have control over them anymore. I also seemed to fall and get stuck in the ground quite a bit. Also it was a little strange to have the enemy bullets look so similar to the health pickups.

That said, I like the aesthetic of the game. The metal background music was a good fit to the game's frantic pace. Good job!

Fun idea but doesn't really feel like a platformer to me. I'm able to spam double jumps and dashes through the level, not having to worry about falling. The different perspectives, which can influence your progression route, is nice.

I had a few issues with the controls glitching out and my guy suddenly switched to 3d view when I didn't want to. This unfortunately prevented me from getting very far into your game.

@bentglasstube : Sorry you didn't like it ! Your 2d view switch automatically when the cooldown on the low-right side of the screen is finished, because, y'know, you're cursed and all. That was made in 48 hours, hard to balance it to a perfect time, or add feedback when you don't have much time before the view switch, so it's effectively important to look on this gauge while playing.

As of the controls glitching out, i'd like you to tell me more about i : Was it about the fact that you penetrate the platform when you jump without moving ? If so, you can just walk out of it.
bentglasstube
02. May 2018 · 09:27 UTC
I suppose then I was too tired to notice the gauge that would count down my change to 3d, so that's on me. After resetting the stage I was sometimes unable to move my character but I could not consistently reproduce this so I can't say much more than that about it. I was playing on the windows build, for reference.

@bentglasstube Oh yeah, I recognize that : You must have left-clicked when respawning, it makes you dash on your own place and eventually freeze the character. I'll try todebug that sometime, even if my code's a mess.Whoopsie, thank you for answering :)

Bon travaille.

Awesome Art, really man! I loved it.. the game is way better than what you are saying, seriously! The game worked smooth when i tried it (maybe didnt notice any visible glitches which you were talking about). Loved the change of camera! Overall its a really nice game and deserves more rating! Well done!

Btw if you wanna try out my game too, its here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/memebumps

Wow, tricky! Nicely done! I like the concept, but thought it was quite disorienting to switch from 2d to 3d, and sometimes felt like my vision was flipped? Maybe some kind of transition animation would be good. It was challenging though, although i think tighter controls are important in a platformer. The visuals sometimes looked a bit janky in 2d mode, and tiles seemed to be clipping, but not sure if that's just for me. Congrats on making the Compo deadline too!

Fine graphics, good audio work, and smooth 2D/3D transitions. I just had a really hard time playing the game. I can't see enough of what's around me to react quickly enough, especially when falling. I didn't realize there was a reason for the 2D/3D transition until I figured out that it was on a timer and I was forced to use it. I got stuck in level geometry and turrets a few times, and some vines damaged me every frame (the ones at the start only hurt me sometimes). Sometimes in 3D, W moved me forward, and sometimes it moved me backward--I suspect this is because one was moving me 2D left and the other 2D right, but it was disorienting. In 3D, the cursor wasn't captured, at least for me, so movement was limited.

Nice polish on the 2d platforming and the first person view! The 2d camera eye is pretty funny. I think I reached the end because there were no more platforms, but I wasn't sure. Overall platforming was much harder in the 3d camera though I guess that may have been the point. I liked how there were hidden areas you could only see in the 3d mode and were blocked in 2d mode. Otherwise the dash helped a lot. I did run into a bug where if I dashed at the start of the game I would get stuck and not be able to move, but otherwise had fun. Nice job!

Took me several tries to beat the game. The 2D-platforming feels a bit clumsy, I wish the controls were more responsive. The ever watching camera in 3d is horrifying, and I love that. There are few bugs here and there, you should probably make a post-jam version with those in mind. Other than that, great idea and a worthy implementation!

That was hard! I often got switched to first person, and found myself making lots of progress... backwards... was hard to know which way I should be going. Controls (on the downloaded Windows version) seem to have a *lot* of latency.. have to hold an arrow key for quite a while before I start moving, makes moving mid-jump really difficult. Great visuals, impressive how much art you got done, and how expansive the level was =).

Really smart idea! Although it was a bit tough to beat, I had fun. I'd like to state some points though:

- If you press the dash button at the beginning, the character gets stuck and you cannot even reload the level properly, having to restart the whole game.
- The controls feel unresponsive, takes a while for the character to move after you press the move keys.
- Doing wall jumps feels weird due to some platform colliders.

This game has potential, I'd love to see it expanded into a full game

Kinda "meh" with the overall game, but mostly because of the difficulty, the weird chose of input and the bug who occurs. But in contrast, the main idea was really cool, the theme of the evil eye who shoot at you (and the evil one who look at you O-O ) and some LD idea like the skippable tutorial, the floating text and multiple way to get trough rise up the interest and push to try more the game. So, in average : meh.
