Dungeon Ruler

A simple action game combining the styles of platformers and top down rpgs. You can play through the whole game and learn as you go, or just skip right to the boss from the start menu. Make sure you don't run out of power!

Written in Java.

Controls: WASD

README: For the boss, the sword/melee attack only works when he is facing the opposite way and his cord is exposed. Just incase you were wondering why you couldn't stab him!

8/1/2017 Bug Fixes - If you only had enough power for a single use of an ability, the ability would display as N/A but still work. Fixed with >= check instead of > - If you died while the final boss was changing color, the color would persist on a replay until the boss activated an ability.

8/8/2017 Bug Fixes - On replay, doors wouldn't spawn after all the enemies in a room were killed (enemy kill count needed to be reset to 0). - If you died in a non-boss room, the game could crash.

I liked the game but the controls are not very good. I think there are some feedbacks to the player.

Nice game. Controls are really not very convenient. Didn't get at the beggining that I have to kill all of the snails. I prefer more pacifist outcome when it's up to such a nice creatures. And holding Space to open doors doesn't seem very obvious.

@rapter thank you so much, it was really stressful to get this minimal gameplay coded in time. I worked backwards starting with the boss so I could be sure the boss fight would feel satisfying.

@plepletier Feedback to the player? If you mean that he keeps moving after you release a button, it's either lag or a bug I haven't yet experienced, sorry about that!

@n-feofentov I'll keep that in mind next LD, I tried using text boxes this year to make gameplay clear, but it seems I missed a good opportunity to explain how to open a door. There was actually a text box that said to kill all the snails at the very start but you must have missed it :( rip them.

It was very difficult to attack sometimes since you always faced right if you weren't moving. Really cool graphics. I'm sad to admit that after SEVERAL tries, I could not bring down the boss. Oh well! Maybe I'll try again later. Cool work, even minimal sound would improve it.

Graphics are mood are very good. Liked how you kind of tell a story very simply. Attacking controls felt a bit clunky. The space key to open door should be instantaneous. Music and sound would have been great.

Cool pixelart and nice gameplay concept. I had an small bug: after replaying it two times (one normal, one boss-only), in the first level the door didn't show after killing all snails. Good job!

Not bad, a bit strange I dont get hurt when running through the lava :D
