Ocean Explorer by Emery

Screen Shot 2017-12-04 at 10.39.24 pm.png You are the worlds best deep sea explorer, and when an ancient city is uncovered, full of valuable artefacts, it is your job to collect them. There is a catch though, the city is guarded by hungry sharks, you have only a limited oxygen and the artefacts are heavy, so the more you have the worse it is. You can refill oxygen at the surface and drop of artefacts for money on either beach.

Nice touch how harpoons affect both sharks and items, liked the music, and the selection of rusty items falling from the sky is well done too.

Fun idea, my ship did not fill up with air quite right.

I love the first impression given by the opening. the music and the sharks are cute
The audio got a little repetitive
attacking the sharks was a cute touch.
The mechanic of waiting for the air to fill up was rather frustrating- i would rather have had my tank fill fully the moment i touch the surface.
Fits the theme well: the weight really did me in at the end as i ran out of air being pressed down by a shark.
having to wait for the barb to reel in was agood limiting mechanic.
Overall nice job!

Well done with a little more polishing the game could turn out great. I love the variety of items there are to pick up. With enough work this game has serious potential. Well Done!

I enjoyed playing this! it was fun to collect as many items as possible. Ideally I would have liked to have an end goal. Or the game could be made more difficult so that I could keep trying to beat my high score. It's a cool game, congratz!

Super fun to play! If you continue polishing it, pay attention to details like the typography to suit the arcade feel more.

What a shame that the music for "Jaws" is under copyright as it would have worked well here. It would have been nice to be able to jettison treasure when you're too heavy ... or jettison passengers!

@badly-drawn-rod I'm already working on an updated version of the game and I just added your idea to the updated version. :)
Im going to post the updated version once Ludum dare is over. Thanks :)

@deinvented I'm glad you enjoyed my game, I was actually working on the typography and feel of the game when I realised that I didn't have enough time to finish it and just submitted what I had. :(
I've already implemented better typography in an updated version which will be released after Ludum Dare

Great game and great idea! I think you can make this into a finished game and probably target it for casual game market. The harpoon is a little slow to shoot, and there isn't any audio feedback to know if I dropped the treasure off, or getting attacked by shark. Overall, great idea that is worth exploring.

Nice gameplay, and the harpoon mechanic is very well done. Wouldn't mind having a timer to avoid only playing half full.

The music was a bit too short, so it got a bit repetative after a while. The multipurpose of the harpoon was a nice bonus as well

@pcmxms sorry it didn’t work, don’t know why. It seemed to be working for everyone else.
May I ask what platform you were using :)

@emery Manjaro Linux. It was very strange, really. The game ran but I couldn't click nether in the start nor in the quit button.

Excellent take on the theme. However I never got any money, regardless of what I picked up. The game would benefit when being a bit faster.

@wakka2 thank you for the advice, I will make the gameplay a bit faster. As for the money, you get money when you drop off relics at the beaches, not when you pick them up. Thank you :)

This is a great start is an awesome game. Few things felt missing in the game, maybe adding that extra polish will remove the 'missing' feel. This is a great idea for a game, but maybe not for a Ludum Dare. Imagine the wonders if you had a week or even a month to work on a game with this idea. If you are ever going to continue work on the game, i would suggest some sort of upgrading system with the money you collect, maybe upgrades such as speed, harpoon damage/speed or more space to carry. As well as upgrades maybe adding more to the level, more to explore, because it feels as if you are restricted to a box of water. Other than that, it is a great game. Congrats!

nice idea! I like the concept where you had to drop off treasure, otherwise you'll get heavier. I noticed I could collect too much and then I would start sinking and screw myself over. Perhaps if there was also a control where you could drop everything you collected so you could make a quick getaway back to the surface for oxygen. I could also imagine some puzzle situations where you have to collect treasure but in order to get out you need to drop all of it (for example running away from a shark). The grappling hook felt a bit slow to me, Maybe if it shot out a bit faster. I think the return speed could be slow (could be interesting if the hook then acted as an anchor or so). Anyway, I think there's different avenues that could be explored. Keep up the good work!

Nice little game! I included it in my Ludum Dare 40 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWC1pkAxfVs
