Super Goop!

Background

Run past, or through, the goop to complete the level. The goop will change the game as it causes different affects after hitting the player. Initially a build up of goop on the player will lessen gravity and is key to completing the levels so be careful! Too much goop on the player and he won't be able to complete it at all, and the more goop the often more difficult it gets to control.

There are five levels that I made during the 48 hours and so after beating them it will repeat level 5 over and over again.

Tool Info

  • Eclipse Java IDE
  • Pyxel Edit for Graphics
  • Bosca Ceol for Sound
  • BFXR for affects

Everything made from scratch for the compo and what a weekend oh boy, I hope you enjoy! If you want to try it out, grab the jar over on github.

Controls (Shown in game as well)

* The Window is Resizable *

WASD or Arrow Keys to move

Space to jump

Any of those to respawn after death/completion

Nice entry! It's a nice take on the theme as you need the goop to a certain point, which means you have to balance your goopification.

Love the little victory sprite/animation, I feel like this could be a really interesting concept for a game outside the bounds of the jam.

Nice entry, great job! :)

Fun little game, I wish there were more levels. I like the concept of balancing the amount of goop you have to best complete the level :)

Neat idea, but there's no downside to having the maximum amount of slime on you. Would be interesting if the slime made you better at some aspect of platforming but worse at another so there was some strategy to how much slime to get. Good work!

I love the art you had on the main character, it is very similar to Superbrothers: Swords and Sorcery style. A style which I myself would like to learn.

There seems to be a bug in one of your levels, that prohibits me from reaching the end. Basically what happens is that I get to the flag, and then I restart back from the beginning of that same level. Unless maybe this game does not have an end screen? So when you reach the last level, you just loop on it so that you don't trigger a crash?

The game was fun nonetheless!

I wish there some sort of UI indication of what's going on, like a little in the corner to indicate what level you're at.

Also, the camera seems a bit off with the player, because whenever you're falling, you don't really see what's underneath until the very last second of landing on something.

Good job!

I submitted a pull request on GitHub for your readme. Also, really nice graphics on the game.

That's nice to loop on the fifth level, this one can be solved by many pathes: getting minimal good, flying half the level,... So I actually played more than five levels... I love your game.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback! It means a lot!

@tiberiusuciu Yes, I never got around to an end screen or animation so it loops the 5th level for those that want to keep messing around and playing the game. The UI idea is a great tip, something quick I can definitely think to implement in the future!

@cameronjsamuels Thanks so much for the readme changes! It was a very hectic ending yesterday, as I'm sure it was for many and it reminded me that I need to clean up my submission page too. Thanks again!

The camera is a bit frustrating. When I'm climbing platforms, I'd prefer it centered on the character in order to see what is below. It's even more frustating when you have to jump but you can't see where the next platform is, like in the last two levels.

I like your use of the theme, and the graphics are nice. Good job on your game!

Good job! The idea is interesting, but isn't fully executed, though there's only five levels so I can't really blame you. It is a little bad that the last level doesn't require any goop (is there even enough to lose?) and is kind of a leap of faith, but only since the camera is so high up compared to your character.

I like the art and the down-tempo music. What could be improved is the level design - a number of the jumps were just a little too finicky and needed to be timed just right. I do also like your application of the theme and the way it manifests on the sprite work. Nicely done.
