Beat Em Shmup by CaptainDreamcast

made by CaptainDreamcast for LD 41 (COMPO)

Can the valiant™, good-hearted™ and loveable™ protagonist Shmup defeat the evil Em comglomerate?

Most shmups don't include punching enemies, so I thought it would be fun to mash them together with beat-em ups. Maybe even sliced in a little Telltale narrative storytelling in there.

Note: All photographs were taken during the Ludum Dare and the engine used was prism, my cross-platform Dreamcast/Windows/HTML5 engine.

Punching bullets back into enemies is something I never knew I wanted in a shmup.

Very hard game but very fun. I couldn't even pass the first level lol. SFX and BGM are really fit for this game. Overall, great game. Keep up the good work.
Check out my game too:

Punching bullets is a real Chad strat and it feels really satisfying, although it's pretty hard to intentionally hit any enemies. I liked the silly dialog choices. Pretty fun.

When I realized that you were literally punching enemies and bullets in a shmup game I was 100% on board, the gameplay is admittedly a bit weak but I'll vouch for you on Innovation and Humor!

Vary hard, humor got a giggle out of me. i's day if very visually noicy and would do well from a more neutral background, otherwise the controls feel a little sterile too? anyway good work dude!

I wasn't expecting the breakout/arkanoid elements, but they really help add to the incompatible genres theme! Also, I appreciated the use of ordinary objects as enemies, since the shmup genre has a long history of that already! Though it was maybe a bit too hard, I still enjoyed my time with this game!

At first I was like "That's strange, this game seems like just like a Shoot 'em up game, where is the twist", but then I puched a ball and everything made sense!

Nice approach! It really changes what you expect from a shoot'em up. Instead of dodging the bullets I found myself going straight to them!

Good work!

PS1: I couldn't help to notice on your profile that you also code for Dreamcast. Is that so? I didn't know there were people still doing this kind of thing! Incredible!

PS2: Your world record on Type 'n Run was beat... The new record is 83 commands and I don't even know how this is possible!

A LD game complete with a boss fight, nice! Although I did get destroyed, fast. As others have mentioned, when you figure out you can punch balls back it becomes a lot easier. Cool game!

Hit the projectiles is really fun, it lacks a little animation and feed back! Nice idea !

Bullet hell beatemup definitely fresh idea! The extra of having an introduction story to further immerse the player in the world even it's a 48 hours game is a nice touch. The music got to me after some time i had to mute it hehe, but the game is majorly bug free and has good flavour to it. Nice job captain dreamcast!

My favorite part was the gigantic fists that spawns to "shoot" / attack. The sound and constant movement of the game made my eyes go craaaazy haha. I liked that you were able to encorporate narrative in the game on top of the top-down shooter on rails.

I learnt the lesson of staying true to myself in the face of adversity. Well done! Throwback to the classic gaming era. The game did feel a little repetitive, but the punching mechanic was fun as hell!

I think this has potential, but i myself could not really get into it. I did like hitting the bullets back. The music got a bit repetitive after a while. But good mixup of themes.

Nice game! I've never played something like this. It's amazing you made your game also for Sega Dreamcast.

From the moment I pressed the first key at the title screen (thought it was frozen for a while) I knew I was in for a ride. Humor is greatly appreciated, and while the gameplay could use work it had a lot of charm. Also impressive that you managed to make it for the Dreamcast!
