Pride by Shephard Joseph

[raw]
made by Shephard Joseph for LD 40 (JAM)

A side scrolling stealth platformer where you go and steal stuff from a warehouse.

Goal: Steal stuff, bring it back to the van.

Theme: "the more you have the worse it is"

The idea I was going for with this was to depict a character who has that weird mix of pride and traditional view of his/her role in his/her relationship with his/her partner/family (the breadwinner) that leads to dishonesty and criminal action when put in a bad situation (here being fired from his/her job and running out of money and feeling to ashamed to tell his family because they rely upon him). I specifically wanted to show how the line between what is the truth or a lie for this character blurs until he/she just becomes totally evasive and distant from their loved ones. ( so maybe honesty would have been a better title ^^').

Largely unfinished mostly due to poor time management (aka i slept too much). untested before creating installer so probably crashes.

*edit 2

So, i tried out the patched version of the game and i screwed up the order of the levels, which means that it went from the first room straight to the last story blurb. Added on the same page as the one linked below is a patched version of the game where the difference from the previous patch is the level order and the D key now takes you to the before last story room.

*edit 1 Used submission hour to make a beatable version of the game:

https://still-learning.itch.io/pride-submission-hour-patched

Didn't get time before end to test the object that leads to last screen --'' changelog:

-fixed last pick_up so as to take you to the final screen.

-fixed enter van arrow to inform you when you can leave at appropriate amount

-fixed issue that touching a guard would crash the game

-fixed not being able to drop off stuff in the third run of the warehouse

-fixed the guard not talking.. kinda

-fixed money not resetting

-and others i forgot in the panic to fix stuff before crashing on my bed

known issues: -collision in general

-D key crashes the game.

-probably a lot of spelling mistakes.

-lack of tutorial/menu/SOUND/gui and uex in general()

-and much, much more.

tools used: -gamemaker -aseprite

keys: -arrow keys to move, -1space to use, -up or down to attach to ladder, -c for slow walk, -escape to exit

Didn't understand everything , but the idea is interesting and graphics look fantastic. Got stuck in the doorway at the end.

I just kept getting stuck on a room that only had text, and two things saying no choice. I tried all the patches but I couldn't get past this

@porcus-pie Thanks for giving my game a go. You need to hold down the space bar on either of the two choices The

I must admit I actually had a lot of fun with this game once I got it working. The core mechanics were really simple yet they worked really well, and the movement was spot on. It was very fluid and easy to control. The graphics as well worked really well, they were so simple yet at the same time they told you all the information you needed to know in the game area. The lack of sound was slightly dissapointing, and I feel even some music could work really well in this game. And it may be slightly obvious from my comments above, but some instructions would clear up some of the more confusing areas. I also found that when unloading into the van, sometimes it didn't unload, the counter would come up but nothing would happen. I am however sounding slightly negative, but I really had fun with this, and I would honestly really enjoy seeing a post-compo version being made.

P.S. In Gamemaker a lot of people often prefer using a zip file rather than an installer for LudumDare, it's just easier for the reviewers

@marjoriep Sorry to hear that. When I played around with the 1st release of the game I noticed I forgot to remove the D key from being used to skip to next room for debugging(ironic, i know). It saddly didn't work, crashed the game and i got the same error as you.

Controles are arrow keys + space bar to use + c for slower walk.

Thanks for giving the game a go and leaving some feedback. Next ludum dare i will put a screen with the controls at the start :) .

@porcus-pie Hey ! Thanks for giving it another shot. I appreciate you taking time to write up so much advice and having that much patience to come back for another go.

When it comes to sound and general explanation of the mechanics to the player, they ended up gettting pushed to the side to actually finish. I was creating the installer minutes before the deadline. I nearly cried when 15mns from the end i noticed deleted one of levels. Thank god for back ups !

Thanks for the tip for the folder. I can see how having to install, play and then uninstall a game on your computer could really put people off . I guess this is the kind of noob mistake i have to learn from - -'.

Anyway thanks again !

@shephard-joseph No problem, it's only fair we give each game a fair go. And yeah the sound didn't bother me too much and I guessed it was a time thing, it didn't affect the game at all.

Wanted to play, but the game required to make changes to my computer to run when installing through the itch-app and that is a no-go.

Would be awesome if this was available for other platforms as well. Also a web version would be great!

Had some trouble with it, crashed many times but I did managed to play it (a small screen with controls or something could be useful) I really liked the idea over all and the art/animations are good. Pretty good game, just sad that it's a bit inaccessible.

The game looks interresting, with nice mecanism. However, I got somewhat frustrated, mostly because death was too sudden (It took me a while to undertsand what was happening). But,it was still enjoyable.
I liked the character's animation.
