FIT_IN by cachodragon

made by cachodragon for LD 40 (JAM)

So here we have it! Our first project for a Ludum Dare! It’s been a hard process, with some times of drama and some times of happiness. But in the end we managed our goal successfully! Enjoy! We’re ready for your ratings!

Controls:

- Move: A/D  or Left/Right arrows

- Change shape: RightShift or LeftShift

The Game:

Your objective is to stay alive as long as possible, all the while completing the bars full of geometric shapes by adapting your shape and standing in the correct position. As time passes, more shapes will be added to the list and it will get harder to adapt! Show what you can do!

PS: We have gotten a problem with the build resolution. We wanted the game to be 800x600 by default, but, when exporting, Unity would not let us. Anyway, you can resize the window manually to make it the shape you want to.

The Theme:

As you all know, this Ludum Dare’s theme is “the more you have, the worse it is”. This got us thinking about excesses, and what are the most popular excesses in our western culture? The 7 deadly sins. From this train of thought, we created a mechanic for each deadly sin and, through a discarding process, chose the one we saw more fit.

The sin we chose to create our game from was “Envy”; the main mechanic in the game was inspired by the character “Envy” from Full Metal Alchemist, a personification of the sin itself. In the game you play as someone envious, someone who can’t be happy by himself and has to adapt and fit in into every situation he’s presented with to feel better about himself, being someone he’s not.

The addition of more shapes to fit into and the neverending bars falling on top of the player make it so that, after a while, there are too many shapes for him to transform to and his desire to “fit in” crushes him.

Switching shapes is the focus of the game and, the more shapes there are to choose from, the harder the game becomes, because the player can only press one button to scroll through all the shapes. That’s why “the more you have, the worst it is”.

We hope you enjoy our small project. Thank you for playing!

Hi, cannot download the thing. Can you try putting it on itch.io instead. Or send it to kullenoskar@gmail.com

It's a pretty good game! Easy game mechanic und difficult to play if times moves on. It fits totally in the theme! Nice one!

I really like the look of your game and it fits the theme nicely.
Good ol' Windows asking me if I want to use Caps Lock made me lose the game ;D Maybe somthing other than shift would be better.

@beebo-studios Thanks!! We inspired on the controls from Downwell. We thought it would be a fitting controls for the mechanics, and very flexible for left-handed and right-handed people. But the caps lock its its disadvantage.

Great one! Feels a bit like Tetris and causes the same stress when time moves on. I like the simple and clear graphics and the shapes and colors are a good choice. I would really like to know what happens when you unlock all shapes but I can't make it that far... :sweat_smile:

@machocodes Thanks!!

@foomar We had the idea to make an ending when you have lasted enough time to see all the shapes. But we hadn't the time and we didn't feel it was necessary beacuse no one will reach that milestone. Certainly, the next project we make on a jam will have a milestone and will be easier to accomplish! Hope you enjoyed!

Really fun, indeed how gameplay feels reminds me of tetris - frantic yet relaxing for some reason.
Some technical issues - once I got past I think 8 or 9 shapes, other ones start to appear outside rendering range, so it's very hard to proceed.

@catspawsgames Thanks! We really wanted to make the player feel that way :D! About the technical issues; we didn't noticed that type of issues yesterday. We will try to fix it! Thanks for the feedback

@cortexdeveloper Thanks! Same ;)

@crdmrn Thanks! We had that idea in mind too! Maybe we will try to make a port for Android, for the lolz

The simple but straightforward nature of the game made it. I especially liked the music! After a certain point the additional shapes started appearing on the opposite side of the screen; I think it would be better for the player to show them all on the same side of the screen (while there's room, at least). Also, I would have appreciated some way of going backwards in the shape order, though that may have been an intentional part of the challenge. Overall, I enjoyed my time playing this! Great work!

Its really good! Addictive too. You should totally polish it up a bit more and release it! The simple, colorful, and angular art style works really well. My only criticism is that I think that the levels progressed too fast later on (5+ shapes).

@grentacular Thanks for the feedback!

Indeed, the fact that you can only change your shape forward, and the new shapes adding at the list on the opposite side of the window makes the game harder as it gets more and more shapes and get every single one. But I will have in mind the window suggestion :D

@arch We didn't really had much time to test it in depht, and we agree that later on it should progress slower on shapes. As I said to a comrade higher on the chat, we will maybe try to make a port on movile and realise it.

Thanks a lot for the feedback! :D

I had a lot of fun with this game! The only issue I had was the pressing shift so many times triggered sticky keys :P

Solid game! Enjoyed it. Gets hard fast. I also had the sticky keys issue, would've been cool to be able to change the mapping, and to play in proper full screen. Good job though.

Our team does a weekly indie gamedev podcast called Nice Games Club, and we just did a Let's Play episode where we played thirty-six (!!) Ludum Dare 40 games, including yours (which we intend to go back to in order to get a better score)!
