Biomass by Jobus

[raw]
made by Jobus for LD 44 (JAM)

In the deepest of space, strange creatures fight violently for survival of the fattest.

Mass is your life source. Consume it. It fuels everything.

Biomass

Game tips: - Watch the bottom left bar, the whole bar represents your mass. If it hits 0, the game restarts and you lose your upgrades. - If the red bar (inside the mass bar) hits 0 after taking enough damage, you drop a lump of mass. - Be careful not to overspend your mass, as it brings you closer to death.

Notes: - This ended up being a sandbox; time ran out before I could add any specific goals.

Controls: - Move with WASD. - Rotate with mouse. - Left-click to fire. - Hold space to upgrade.

Disgusting! In an awesome, Cthulu-esque way.

Looks really great - although the framerate did chug quite a bit for me

Spent way longer playing this than I should have. Gorgeously beautiful, the large purple structures in space are amazing. The costs and payoffs are well balanced, which I know is hard from my own game. Favorite aspect is that, you need to eat to survive, but once you're too large it's impossible to chase the smaller prey, perfect analogy to the natural world, genius.

Love it. At a first look at the screenshot I thought I am gonna play for some easter bunny sitting in an easter basket. I like the mood and the graphics (did you make them by yourself?) - reminds me a bit of the first Machinarium

@philarmon Easter bunny? Oh god, I can see it too now.

Yes, the visual style and models were all made by @flavoredpickle. There were even a few more models that sadly went unused.

It's great! Graphics and sounds fits just right. Reminded of me of Spore. I loved every second of farting arround the universe, looking for some fatty meatball to eat :D But enemies weren't really that challenging. I didn't really escaped from anyone. And I mostly used my mouth to damage them.

Space Munching Simulator 2019! Haha, this is great! Amazing visuals, it looks really polished.
I had some minor framerate issues. I also ran out of things to munch on pretty quickly. The only remaining grey dots were pointing to tiny aliens, not enough to sustain yourself.
I don't quite know what the purpose of the guns were, since I just munched on everything instead of shooting it, haha!

Great work, i played it for quite some time. With some more work towards replayability i can easily see me playing this for hours.

Awesome game. I managed to get to a point that nothing else was showing on the map, so I guess stuff doesn't respawn? Sad. I could've sunk hours into that.

Nice take on the theme, and it's incredibly rare to see such detailed and well-lit 3D models in a 72-hour jam entry. I didn't find much challenge but I had fun flying around munching on other alien creatures and shooting at them. Great work I'll have to say, will need to play more of this later.

Thank you all for the awesome comments!

As some of you have mentioned, yes, the game does run out of enemies. I wanted to add a dynamic spawning system, but ran out of time. :disappointed:

this is the best game i've came across so far, i was playing this for more than a hour...the AAA-esque graphics, pbr materials, emissions, models etc are so gorgeous.

It doesn't run well on browser, so please build a standalone windows version(which will run better, ofc), i would love to have a icon of this game on my desktop

and yeah this game has a potential to become "Indie Commercial Success"

Very beautiful. Reminds me a bit of my LD40 game https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/earth-blossom - but yours has much better graphics.

This looks great! It's strangely relaxing despite the monstrous look of the creatures.

The only thing I wasn't too sure about is that I didn't really have a use for the fire button? Maybe eating is just that more efficient of a weapon.

Added a Windows build to the downloads as requested. Both builds have also gotten a few bugs fixed (notably the broken direction indicators).

@youbestrong Yeah, the acid guns are a bit useless. There are many balance and mechanical changes I would have made if the jam wasn't over.

This game is so atmospheric! Beautiful art, and the music creates a very dense world. I wish the world was a bit more populated, but at the same time the empty space is nice as well.

I saw you already were answering the questions on the acid guns. I actually found it really relaxing to just cruise around and throw out a green blob every now and then! :) Really fun concept!

This game is absolutely gorgeous and also fun to play and themetastic.

You fail at elementary physics though: there is no drag in space.

Great work. The graphics were great - all the pieces from lighting to post-processing to texturing felt really satisfying. Gameplay was good and I like the upgrade system although, as other have mentioned, chomping away at enemies felt more useful than shooting them. Although shooting still looked cool so I kept firing anyways.

@flying-dog-fish Haha, we had an argument over that, but realism had to be sacrificed.

Great game. Visually stunning and chomping the enemies was super satisfying. As others have mentioned, shooting didn't seem necessary since it was usually more effective to eat everything. Well done!

Graphics is very good! Game is fun, but i think shootng/eating should be more ballanced to upgrade the gameplay.
