You play as a chick magnet, literally.

Press W, A, S, D or arrow keys to move.

  • Moving around by pressing and releasing the buttons repetitively to prevent singing.

  • Moving around by holding down the keys or just staying still to sing.

  • Singing attracts chicks.

  • Stop singing and some of the chicks following you may begin to lose interest in you.

  • If there are no eggs around, you have to wait for the chickens to lay some, so don't attract their attention.

  • Chickens only lay eggs in their nests.

  • Touch an egg to stop it from hatching and bring it around

  • If an egg touches a chick or a chicken it will stop following you and starts to hatch.

  • Chickens lay eggs, each egg hatches into a chick, chicks don't grow up though.

  • A chicken may destroy her own egg if it follows you.

  • When pecked by a chicken you might get thrown at a distance away.

  • Get at least one egg to the lamp before the bar is all red. When it receives an egg the bar will be full again. Repeat.

  • How many eggs can you manage to obtain before the game is over (which it will immediately restart)?

More and more chicks get hatched as you collect more and more eggs, so you will have more and more chicks following you around.

Try to collect as many eggs as you can while keeping the number of chicks following you around to a minimum.

Can't export for Linux and HTML5 because I used the beta version of Godot 3. It says: "Export templates for this platform are missing/corrupted: Linux/X11"

Known issues:

  • Game will crash when game is over if you killed too many chicks or collected too many eggs, which means if you play the game it will most likely crash. (something to do queue_free() to free the resources, bad code on my part, sorry!).
  • Dead chicks are invisible but they might collide with live chicks (sorry).
  • Resizing the window may hide the progress bar at the bottom (sorry).
  • If you dig into the source code, you might find that I tried to make the game a rhythm game but failed. :D
  • If you get pecked by a chicken you might be thrown far away off the play area (thanks, @chronosv2 for pointing it out!).

Used:

  • Engine: Godot 3 Beta
  • Music: Bosca Ceoil
  • Magnet sfx: SunVox
  • Chicken voices (I used my voice): Audacity
  • Graphics: Inkscape

Hey, can you make this an executable maybe? I don't have Godot so I can't try your game :/

Nice little game i like it! Maybe make the game little bit easier?:D

This is cute, funny game name and concept. I couldn't ever get an egg, though. It was never clear why an egg would follow me or wouldn't.

That was surprisingly tough. I was expecting some sort of reward for getting an egg it, like some wishes.

@gassasin Haha thanks, I think the game is too hard too!

@eli-delventhal Thank you!! An egg follows you if you touch it, but it stops following if a chick or a chicken touches the egg while it is following you.

@galan :D Actually I was thinking of more punishments, like a genie comes out and attacks you because he isn't getting his egg ASAP. Or maybe he makes all the eggs hatch immediately. Or turn all the chicks available into chickens.

What if YOU are the genie? And you are collecting the eggs to feed your hungry genie family of five? And your genie wife/husband and kids would starve if you don't get the eggs to them in the lamp in time.

This is a really interesting concept, and really shows the theme well.
I did have a hilarious situation where a chicken pushed me out of the play area, though. I wandered around until the inevitable restart.

I'd love to see where you take this, if you plan on post-LD updates. Keep up the great work!

@chronosv2 Thank you! I thought of making it into some kind of RTS.

My idea so far:

You start of with one egg. You are provided with an initial number of worms. The egg hatches after clicking on it enough times, then you feed the worms to the chick. The chick grows into a chicken, and you have your first "building".

Feeding the chicken enough number of worms, it will lay an egg. As the next chick hatches, that chick becomes the leader of your army, the "magnet" which the other chicks will be attracted to. You move this "magnet" around with the keyboard or game controller as it leads a group of chicks, it is your main player.

Then on to the 3rd chick, 4th chick and so on. For each chick you can choose to let it
1. Be the leader of the army, reassigning the "magnet".
2. Or assign it to find worms, the primary resource of the game.
3. Or if you have enough worms, feed the chick enough worms to turn it into a chicken to lay more eggs to produce chicks faster.
4. Or by default, it is assigned to be a "foot soldier" chick, which gets attracted to the army leader, the "magnet".

Only one "magnet" can exist at a time on each side. If a chick is tasked with gathering worms, a "rally point" can be set from the chick to bring the gathered worms directly to a selected chicken, so as you have more and more resource gathering chicks, you don't have to feed chickens manually.

...and so on...need to think about building caps and unit caps. And what to do if you have extra chickens.

not sure if I'm actually going to work on it yet. :(

Interesting concept, though your instructions made it sound overly complicated. The extent of the tutorialization in the game is just "bring eggs, put in here" which is perfect IMO. Everything else can be figured out through practice. With that said, I got 4 eggs to the magic lamp (why a magic lamp? lol) before I got pinned in a corner by a massive swarm of chicks. Kind of tedious but I enjoyed the unique concept.

@ruthiepee Thanks! I didn't have time to even think where to bring the eggs. So I just thought, "magic", hence the lamp. Also, you are suppose to be a genie bird with a magnet above its head.

Btw, you can drown the chicks.

I like the chickens! It was a bit confusing that the egg takes a few seconds to follow you. Also I think I didn't understand the instructions lol I couldn't stop singing.

Always love chicken games. And this is no exception.

Interesting concept, but the elements don't really seem to work together. Why a magnet to attract eggs? Why would a chicken be taking eggs into a magic lamp? If you maybe had a fox or something it would work better. The input was also a bit laggy so grabbing the eggs became a bit frustrating.

The game is packaged well though and works great on a Mac which I cannot say for many other games :)

Extra points to you for using Godot. And the Godot 3 beta! You're actually the first I've seen in the jam that put the beta version to use. (but y u no export the linux build :( i downloaded the source and played through the engine itself)

Now talking about the game, your way of making tutorials is something I enjoyed. Writing next to the initial spot, simple and to the point. The graphics were funny but the rest of your content is pretty alright. A nice soundtrack would fit in well, but since this is a Compo game, maybe you're not a musician so I don't blame you. More content in general would make the game more interesting but mechanics are the true core of a game, and since you did that well, you have good foundations on this LD run.

Overall good game.

I liked the name :). It took a few minutes to get used to the gameplay mechanics, but once I figured it out, I enjoyed the game. The graphics were also very charming. Well done.

Hey a fellow Godot & Inkscape user! I didn't use the 3 beta though. It's nice to see it's so capable. I'll have to try it for the next one. Fun idea. It was really hard for me but I got a couple eggs in there! :)

Love chickens, sounds and overall craziness of this game. It seems to impossible to bring eggs in time, when you have too many chickens behind you, but thats was fun :)
