Rude Bear ReRPG by alexrose

[raw]
made by alexrose for LD 39 (JAM)

Rude Bear ReRPG is the 14th game in the core Rude Bear series (although technically the 18th Rude Bear universe game).

HOW TO PLAY (YOU SHOULD REALLY READ THIS):

The game uses a REALTIME, TURN BASED battle system. The faster you put in actions, the faster the thing goes. It's like Paper Mario except fully realtime. If you click defend at the exact right time, you take zero damage. You can play with any input method but realistically, PLAY WITH A CONTROLLER IF YOU WANT TO WIN.

THE GAME IS TOO HARD. I MADE IT TOO HARD. EVERY SINGLE BATTLE IS ITS OWN CHALLENGE. IT REQUIRES A NEW STRATEGY. PASS YOUR MP BETWEEN CHARACTERS. DEFEND ONE CHARACTER FROM DAMAGE. WORK OUT ENEMY ATTACK PATTERNS. USE YOUR NEW ABILITIES. IT'S BASICALLY A PUZZLE GAME.

The game is also fucking HUGE and.. I'm sorry, I really didn't bother doing the whole "make this shit easier for the jam because game jammers are notoriously shit at actually playing video games so lower the difficulty by 90%" but because of that, I've added a video here where you can see the actual.. full extent of how cool the battle system is here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCqjg2wXx6U

So if you really struggle, it'd be nice if you clicked through that video a couple of places to see what the game has to offer (e.g. 18 monsters, 8 areas etc.)

Great, but the fights are really messy.

Cool idea with the paper art style! Looks really nice. I could imagine a story where the world starts to fill with color while you progress.

Wow, the game looks great and the mechanics are incredibly complex. I found it way too confusing when there were 3 enemies on the screen, i left it when you have to fight 3 of the first boss. I watched your video after that part, the game has a lot of things to offer, good job man.

Really unique game and art style I love it! Bonus points for "It is dope as fuck and you should enjoy it." in your readme. Only gripe is that battles were a little tricky to figure out at first.

The artstyle is very interesting and the battles are like old school FF but chaotic, nice entry.

I love your artstyle, and it is amazing (judging from the video) how much content you managed to put in there. However, the fight system is quite unplayable with mouse as soon as more than one enemy starts to show, so I couldn't get past the second fight. Maybe (for noobs like me) you could add an option to make it really turn-based, or a difficulty setting? Great work otherwise!

Really cool concept & I love the art style too. Obviously super hard but I appreciate the gameplay - I just wish it ramped up a bit more gradually. Some sort of tutorial fight might help here (I found the first fight to be pretty hard). Since the default speed is so fast it felt like I just had to spam calm a bunch until I could actually figure out what to do. Would be nice to have some explanation of abilities outside of battle too, when I got a new ability it felt like I had to throw away a fight just to read the description and try them out. Still a pretty cool experience, nice work.

I think the combat's a little too fast paced to be controlling so many people at once. You could make some really wacky battles if everyone was controlled by a different human player.

Opened this up expecting a bit of a meme game but actually was surprised by the super slick art and animations. The battles felt a bit clunky and I felt like I constantly had to rush or just spam the attack button but overall nice work on the art and world design.

I didn't expect the game to be like this when I saw a screenshot at first, but it's really damn cool, and the art is pretty rad! :O The papercut style of the game, with the sticks and all rocks and feels pretty unique!

The battle system really does make it challenging, but it's also really fun to play and match the proper commands to attack, defend and try to win battles.

The audio also really does help with the mood and the overall feeling of the game's really nice! :D

Congrats! Great job there! :)

Nice art and setting :)

Also cool combat system.

When there was more then one player/enemy on the screen I prefer to have a specific button for attack / defend / spell for each character.

And it was hard to see which character the enemies was attacking, might work better on a topdown grid, or with ex 3 different layers.

But cool concept :)

Very cool + fun universe and atmosphere. Too bad the combats were that messy and difficult :(
