Fist of Wrath by vlandemart

[raw]
made by vlandemart for LD 43 (JAM)

Game is 100% made on Manjaro Linux

Pesky humans forgot how to properly obey to their only patron! They can't understand that sacrifices must be made. It's time to teach them the old ways.

tutor.png You control fist of angry god and your goal is to destroy all non-believers before they kill you with their ignorance (and cannons). * Screenshots were made in enhanced post-LD version, graphics in LD version is a bit simpler. * screen1.png Humanity inevitably grows and expands, your goal is to stop them. screen3.png screen4.png Currently game includes 6 small levels.

I've started this project at 03.12, skipping one day of jam. However, that didn't stop me from finishing my game (but it stopped me from polishing it). screen5.png Resources used: - https://opengameart.org/content/village-buildings (CC0) - https://opengameart.org/content/pixel-dungeon-iso-tileset (CC0) - Sounds were generated using SFXR

Warning

Note that there is post Ludum Dare version (enhanced one) with in-game tutorial (first screenshot in post) and some better graphic assets from my friend. There are no gameplay changes, only visual ones - new background, trees, clouds, flowers, etc. LD Version: ld.jpg Post LD Version postLD.jpg

Interesting little game! It took me a little while to grasp the strategy, but I was eventually able to power through all the levels (sometimes the humans stood in a line and never moved...) My one suggestion would be to make the damaging concept a little more interesting. I felt helpless when enough fire towers showed up to blow right through my health bar, and there wasn't really anything I could do about it. Instead, I would make it so that A. fireballs only damage you when they hit you, B. make fire towers show up more frequently, and C. add in another form of damaging, such as the villagers lobbing arrows at you as the game goes on.

Nice job with your entry!

I had fun playing your game!
It is a nice feeling to punish some humans who spread around the world like cockroaches ;-)

Thing that might be considered for being added to the game:
+ sound track - it will add to the overall atmosphere
+ variety of weapons for the god to chose from with different cooldown time.
+ ability to shoot down launched fireballs

Another concept to consider: killing all the population should IMO lead to game over. Gods exit only until there is at least one human believing in them. So I would change gameplay towards keeping the population in the certain range: to small - the can't reproduce and die out of starvation, to big - they overshoot you. And the goal is to stay alive say for a minute or two.

Have my respect for being a solo developer in this game. Very nice entry!

In hard Level 1 and Science Level in html5 the people stayed in lines and did not move.

Funny concept, a bit like an evil version of black and white. More good powers would be good. Like a shield, or a fire or an illness, slowing down people. Maybe give them for destroying build X or load them by X cooled people. Some shared cooldowns and some distinct cooldowns / charge bars for different ability classes would add a lot to this game.

I liked this game btw. it was original and fun (and I beat it!). Does the regeneration rate depends on the numbers of humans on the screen?

Story question: What could the humans sacrifice to please you? Maybe there over expansion / population growth?

Fun concept, I agree with the things stated by above commenters.

So... To be somewhat constructive, what this game does great is:

1. Destruction
2. Feeling powerful

These are the two things you would focus on to enhance the gameplay, but keep the game as it is. Minor improvements such as

1. More powerful smashing-animation instead of a slow linear movement of the hand, I'd love to see the hand flying down with something that comes closer to my great vengence and furious anger at these villagers. For example, I think an exponential speed in the hand (accelerating) would feel more powerful/realistic, so that it smashes into the ground with great power.

2. Satisfying sound effects on smash

3. Funny/satisfying sound effects from villagers, screaming in terror as the hand smashes them to pieces.

If you check my profile and play our game, try imagining how our game would be with no audio/poor audio. Try imagining how the game would be if there were no glass-shatter och flying of the units when you Fired them.

I can see this game be quite addictive, perhaps as a mobile game (which I assume you do@Red Machine) if you add more challenging levels and some God-upgrades (faster smash-recharge, regain life when killing villagers, two hands, etc, etc). Well done!

Thank you all so much for your great feedback!
I am currently figuring out how to develop this game into nice mobile strategy, so all your suggestions are very valuable.
I will definitely check out all your games as well once I get my windows laptop. Right now I can only play web/linux games.

Hi! That's a nice concept you got there, kill those humans before they can kill you with their stupid science. I like it! The artstyle is exactly my type. Sound is ok, nothing special but alright. I really like the gameplay itself. I won once and lost 2 times afterwards :) thanks for this, had a blast.
P.S: Would love to see a "turned around" Version of this game where you have to build a settlement and have to be strong against the gods. Maybe next ludum dare :) keep it up!

This is overall a very interesting and fun little game. As already mentioned is there things that can make this game better, but for this is already a pretty good game. Well done.

Had to restart the science level several times before I managed to kill all humans (minus one) with a lucky first shot. The "hard" levels were rather easy, due to an seemingly infinte amount of power (bar filled faster than my fist decended back to the heavens).

All in all, a great idea and a very fun game. :)

Oh darn, they breed too fast.

The gameplay itself is nice, art style is quite minimalistic and nice. I've enjoyed it.

Good job.

Had a bug on the 2nd level where the humans didn't move and more didn't spawn so I won pretty easily. Also towers seemed tough, it would be cool to have a defensive ability to outplay the towers.

Cool little game! I really like the concept, and I think it's executed decently. Would like if I could do a little more than just click, and having to wait to drop my fist is a little boring – limiting it in some other way might be more fun (maybe the longer you wait, the bigger the AoE, but you can rapid-fire if desired, for example).

Lol this is definitely my new favorite LD game. It seems like your game suffered a bit of what my game suffered from which was, a lack of time to tweak mechanics. For one, it seemed like some levels I was able to just one shot the villagers since they weren't able to build anything in time before I was able to punch. Also, on some of the hard levels they were building WAY too many fire towers before I could start knocking them down. With all that said, after several attempts I was able to complete your game! This is a great concept and there's lots to expand on so I hope you continue to work on it post jam!
