The controls are superb! Combined with the sound effects and the balancing act of shooting and picking up bitlives and opening chests, the game is rewarding.
I was a bit sad, when it ended. You hit the theme very well and there's a lot of potential. Would have loved to dig a bit deeper.
I had some glitches/slowdown at starting but then was ok
graphics need polishing and maybe some more love
theme fitting is ok
Gameplay is immediate and clean in the structure
Overall I had fun for a couple of minutes
Thanks for your work!
Compo games are supposed to be by a single person :/ Did you mean to enter it in the jam?
You fit the theme ok, but yo ucan do better with this type of game!
Graphics are good, but as @memel06 said, graphics needs love even if you don't have the time :yum:
But the game is here, and you have to be proud of the job you done there !
Keep the good work!
Could be good if you do a post_jam version!
Maybe it will be better If the coins get to the character automatically.
My suggestions to improve the game:
* You should be able to press with a mouse button on the startscreen, especially as you need to press a mouse button in the subsequent dialogue.
* Enemies should not be able to go through walls and out of map.
* I did not know that you shoot with your life and assumed that lifecoins just go down over time, and shot too much useless bullets. I think you should indicate that mechanic in the intro, or on the ludumdare website.
I'd suggest adding a shop system to buy better weapons. Also I wish there was a reason to actually slay enemies. Right now you don't get much by doing so. In my first run I lost at the last level, in my second one I avoided all enemies and won with 70 coins to spare.
This game would be really interesting to speedrun. Add more levels because I'd love to play more of this.
The gameplay is a bit too simplistic though and a bit too literal to the briefing. Nonetheless, it's a fine entry, good job to you and your cousin :)
