made by elkiwydev for LD35 (COMPO)
ShootShift is the game which let you play a thing that shapeshift in to other things every five actions you take. Oh, and enemies shapeshifts too.

In the game there are two floors divided in rooms filled with enemies. There is one item room and one boss room in each floor.

R or SPACE to reload
TAB minimap
H toggle Hardcore mode (You can switch mode only in the menu)

///Stuff I used to make it
-GameMaker:Studio for coding
-GraphicsGale for pixelarting
-Gimp for fine details
-Bfxr for sfx
NB: in the game there is no music, only sfx.

this was a good entry, liked the fact that the graphics were pretty self explanatory about what each shapeshift would do, didn't have to wade through an explanation each time or test too much

I can't play the game because it opens in a window that doesn't show the entire game. Can only see half the screen.

Shapeshifting was too random. It would have been better as a turn-based game rather than a real-time game. As such it was a bit difficult to enjoy :(

Really neat core mechanic! Took me a bit to get used too, but once I did I had a great time. Cool visuals and vibe.

You lost a star on fun because I couldn't figure out how to get bullets back. Is one of the shapes suppose to be melee? I experimented but it was too hard because it changes shape so much. I also found the arrow keys to shoot made things too complicated... space bar would have been enough but I guess sometimes space bar did something too? Never figured that part out.

Conceptually, this was really cool, and I think it was a really good interpretation of the theme. The graphics were nice too (I thought the scanlines were a nice touch). I had a good bit of fun playing it, my only complaint is that the shapeshifting seems a bit too random, like sometimes you get a shape useless for your current situation. Also, it would be nice to be able to retry the second floor if you die there.

Reminds me of binding of isaac, in a very good way - I played a few times - lack of ammo might be an issue though :c

Very nice concept though, I'd play a fleshed out version :D

Very good and addicting game. Couldn't understand though how to get more ammo. But with some polish, this game could be something!

Cool game. I really like the idea and the implementation. Two things I found a bit hard: First, no "please reload" indicator. This cost me a few minutes at the beginning. And it would be cool to know your next shape (like in tetris), so you can position yourself a bit better.

I like it. It's fun but shifting randomly is kinda makes it hard :) Quite nice game, well done!

Fantastic entry! I love roguelikes and this is a new favorite for me. Reminded me of 868-Hack in terms of aesthetic :)

I like the game, but within a couple of rooms I'd just lose the ability to shoot altogether making it impossible to progress. Lovely graphics and well-done but this bug makes it unplayable for me :(

Excellent use of the theme, the graphic for each shape was self-explanatory which helped the learning curve. Graphics were great, so were sfx. Overall very good.

Good luck in the compo!

Went in thinking it was a turn-based game. After a couple of minutes realised that it is not and the most efficient strategy is to mash shooting and reloading buttons :(
But the overall idea and art style are very nice :)

Very challenging and very well polished. I like the strategic element of choosing when and where to move to aim and fire at your enemies. Sadly couldn't get very far.

Just out of curiosity, what shader did you use for the scanlines? Unity < Colorful Fx?

I like the presentation and kind of fuzzy feel of the shading. Especially the really deep FOV shadows make it spooky and surprisingly complex-seeming since you interpret them as holes in the floor. So it's almost as if the room is changing as you run around.

I'm not as sold on the autoshifting mechanic though, ends up feeling quite random when there's no user influence except sometimes skipping a move to hold on slightly longer if you like the current weapon. The diagonal one also is very confusing in the heat of battle.

Maybe one improvement would be to ease the player in by enabling the different weapons one at a time for the early levels? Either that, or allow some kind of limited action that skips a form or takes you back to the previous one at a cost. Not quite sure, it might be enough to just make the unchanging stints longer than a few steps. Also what about switching manually for a +1 HP reward and the risk of getting a worse weapon that you can't get rid of for N steps? Maybe some would even be non-weapons or stuff like reversed controls... I don't know, there's definitely potential in the style and general formula here.
