Lunatic Luke by fidrik

[raw]
made by fidrik for LD 44 (JAM)

Inspired by Mad Max and Dune, an arcade style battle arena game in which you drive a buggy around an arena and destroy enemy buggys to get there resource.

I tied this to the theme through the game play and narrative

Through the gameplay there is one resource called "Juuce" that is used for everything in the game, including health, fuel, ammo, and is a drug used in powerups. So your life is your currency.

Through the narrative, which I didn't fully put in due to time, the idea is you either die in the arena or buy your way out. So people would be placing bets on the combatants and whoever wins doesnt even get to keep the money, but they keep their life.

Controls WASD - move SPACE - boost LEFT CLICK - shoot RIGHT CLICK - drug

Haha fun :) Nice Mad-Max vibe, also nice to see cars floating above me when exploding them! More sounds would be welcome though (e.g. for exploding cars).

Nice submission! I really liked the car graphics and the bad guys flipping up into the air. It took me a little bit to figure out I was getting juice from enemies because I was picking it up so quickly. I did end up saving enough to get my freedom. Overall nice work.

Graphics are really cool and I liked the music. The vehicle felt a little sluggish and the camera made the game feel a bit claustrophobic too me but overall liked it.

@volatile-dove yeah I wanted to get better sounds like a roaring engine and better soundtrack but ran out of time, thanks for playing my game!

@dvlv thanks for playing :)

@malarpuppet It does feel a bit slow to accelerate, can boost from a full stop to help you get some speed. Thanks for playing and for the feedback

Liked the style, well done on getting so many mechanics packed it. The driving is a bit slow, but the boost compensates for that. Great work!

Good looking game with good game mechanics. More sound effects would have made this game even better.

I got stuck on my first play through and rather quickly :P

So I made sure to use the boost option to prevent that in the future. I was confused with how Juuce was being used and when. I know the game tells you "it is everything" but the rate at which is is consumed vs how I get it back, especially since often the visual indications that one was collected from destroying an enemy, was hard to tell.

I know that others have mentioned this but I like to put a twist on it. It isn't so much that the game drives slow is that it feels like it takes an unfair amount of time to recover from a mistake. If I turned that wrong way or hit a wall I then have to fight just to get to the right orientation which takes me out of the experience of fighting for my life and makes it feel like I am fighting with the game. lol

Still, the idea is there, the game looks great, I do get that feeling of an arena set in the desert, and the particle effects really brings everything to life.

@prodigalson Thank you for the feedback, much appreciated. I agree the driving could be better. I had never used a wheel collider before and when I first got the car driving it kept tipping over when I turned. I increased the mass loads and the acceleration a bit and it was much harder to flip over. I kept tweaking all the different values but I left it as it was to work on other things as I was spending too much time trying to get it perfect. But I should have had another go at tweaking at the end.

Thanks for playing though!

the art style is very cool, reminds me of hot wheels toys , the driving feels great when you start to pick up speed, but man takes too long to build up velocity. The best part is shooting at high speed, but I feels like getting punished too much for doing so, maybe shooting costing 1 JUUCE only could help. Overall is a solid game, Good job!

Fun game! Did you do that alone? If yes, it is impressive for the given time!
Good game. For me everything could've been a little bit faster ;)

@justswn Yeah I made it alone :) thanks for playing, Yeah I think I should have changed the speed and acceleration of the car, would have felt more fluid.

I love the art of this game. As well as the combat of thowing enemies into the air is very staisfying. However, the car felt a bit hard to steer and was very slow to gain speed, but overall still enjoyed the game. :)

Very fun, with cool mechanics and a great amount of polish. Maybe a little too easy tho (or too slow?).

I liked the game. The music is very suitable. Shoot nice and felt explosions when destroying the enemy. It was interesting to replay) But in my opinion it was possible to make a more arcade control, so that there was a greater desire to use the use of jumps.
I really want the project not to be abandoned and done only better!

That was pretty fun! Really satisfying watching the cars blow up in the air. Graphics are really nice too and it controls well. I wouldn't mind the game being faster. Right now there was really no point in the "drug" option because I definitely didn't want it to go any slower. Good entry!

I think it would be better if the enemy vehicles did their best to avoid touching the player's vehicle. That would keep them in constant movement and make it more challenging for the player to shoot them. Good entry.

This game is very fun. Steering felt pretty good to me unlike some other commenters. And you should be punished for making mistakes, otherwise it would be too easy.

Pretty fun! Especially when you hit the high speeds.

Only thing was it felt a little too easy, would have been fun if the enemies could ram you.

really good fun game. I did feel it was slightly too easy but im a sucker for anything mad max style. I think with some tweeking and maybe a couple of different enemy types this could be a great game :D Well done :D

Controls felt a little unresponsive, especially after ramming something. I wasn't able to reverse for a bit.

Some of the Juuce wasn't collectable, it seemed like it was too high with no ramp to get to it.

Physics were cool, watching things fly through the air and sometimes land on me. Needs more explosions and sounds, though.

Overall, with some more speed on the cars and projectiles to make it more hectic, it would be really enjoyable.
