Thief of Hours by CharlesSchar

[raw]
made by CharlesSchar for LD 44 (JAM)

In Thief of Hours, you play as... well, a thief. But your thief is no cat burglar. He steals the very life from people, transforming young boys into old men! Like most thieves, though, he must avoid the police and hide into alleyways to escape.

Controls: Arrow keys to move Space to dive and steal life Up/down near a ladder to climb it Up near an alleyway to hide in it

Gameplay: Your goal is to dive into as many brown-haired people as possible to steal their years. Upon turning into old men, they will begin to chase towards you. To hide from them, you must press [up] at an alleyway to hide from them and disengage them. The more years you steal before you hide, the more combo points you get! Stay away from police officers and grab randomly spawning health potions to replenish life.

This is my first Ludum Dare project, so please give helpful criticism.

This is great haha! Enjoyed this one man, it's oddly satisfying to play!

The graphics could do with a bit of work, but I also lowkey really like the style. Good job!

Heh, I enjoyed this... It's pretty difficult at first as those old dudes are quick! I got the hang of it though. I kinda liked messing with the physics and the AI - if you hand about in the middle of a ladder you can get an old dude stuck on another ladder, and the police can't reach you. Made me smile. ;)

Definitely a fun game! Love the shifty eyeballs when you duck in the shadows. Makes for an interesting game of maneuvering around old grumps. Even if it's a little buggy, it makes me chuckle every time an old man gets stuck on a tree or can't decide to climb up the ladder or not XD

Interesting concept, definitely some neat ideas in here. Though I ran into a few bugs it was pretty fun anyways.

This was fun! I enjoyed the simple graphics and overall the way the game played. I also think that the main screenshot of the game is great and it made me want to play it! This is very good for a first entry!

Since you asked for constructive criticism...

- Some simple sound effects would go a long way to making this feel more finished. You can use something like https://www.bfxr.net/ to quickly create some and it should be simple to add them. Even without music it would go a long way towards feeling more finished.

- It felt more intuitive to me that you would press down to leave the alleys instead of hitting up again. I had to switch my thinking to hit up instead when I wanted to come out.

- Obviously there were some pathfinding bugs that could be worked out.

- The fact that there are multiple layers connected by ladders is standard platforming, but the fact that there are trees on the top layer is a little strange :)

- A nice background (bonus points if it is parallax scrolling!) is pretty simple to create and implement but adds a ton of polish.

These are all small things that could just lead to a more finished product, but you should be very proud of what you created. Nicely done!

Fun little game. I think minibobbo summarized pretty well about what could be improved, but I'll take the liberty of adding a couple of things:
- About the sound, I'll add https://sfbgames.com/chiptone/ to the list. It's pretty much the same concept, but a little bit more intuitive to use.
- I found that if you hide and press any other key, you also get out (or at least, it happened a couple of times.. Don't know if that was intended). This made it a bit hard to hide while in a rush to avoid police and old men...

I had way more fun than I expected with this. Even though the art is kinda rough here and there, I found it pretty charming, especially the player sprite. As others have pointed out, sound is always good to add. Even the most basic sounds make a big difference if only for the feedback it gives the player. Although to be fair, and I don't say this a lot, this is one of the few games where the lack of sound didn't bother me that much because the VISUAL feedback was so good. Of course adding sound would make it even better but I just wanted to give you props because lack of feedback is the most common complain I have when it comes to jam entries.

This game's got pretty good visual feedback. I like that the characters are expressive, and I got an explicit "Combo!" reward. It can be pretty easy to get cornered though.

Nice work.

The old guys are very quick making it quite difficult and there aren't many allies to hide in.
