Frank's escape by Nyri0

[raw]
made by Nyri0 for LD 40 (COMPO)

For my second edition, my goal was to create my first game with Unreal Engine and Blender. And, in fact, my first 3D game. In the category Compo, I had to do everything by myself: the art and the programming.

I used Blueprint because otherwise it wouldn't have been possible to finish something in time. All the content has been made during the week-end except for the walking animation and the sky which are builtins from Unreal Engine.

This is a short escape game. There should be more items but time was too limited. Enjoy the art (I've slept only 3 hours during the week-end), and give me some feedback.

Controls:

  • move: WASD / left joystick
  • camera: mouse / arrows / right joystick
  • interact: space bar / A on gamepad
  • escape or tab to quit

There is no ending animation, so when you reach the helicopter you can stop playing.

NB: if you have never run a game made with UE you may need to install some dependencies: DirectX end-user package (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35) and Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=53587).

Good job on making your first 3d game in UE! Tried playing on a controller and controls feel okay, only thing that feels weird is the camera in narrow corridors, which is probably not something easy to do in the alloted time (at least I wouldn't be able to do it). As a prototype kinda game, it works and I love the main character model, while every other model fits well together (maybe except the helicopter :D).
Don't really see how it fits the theme though.

The camera is very simple, it is locked at a fixed position relative to the character, and when there is a blocking element it is projected in front of this element, on a line from character to original position. Didn't have time to tweak it, and it was also too late to change the layout of the level (I should have made it waaay bigger).

When I read the theme, I thought about ways to use it in the mechanics but no idea was interesting enough so I thought about making it about money: having more money doesn't necessarily make you happier. I should have more emphasized this aspect.

Sorry for the helicopter asset, I've made it in 15 minutes at the very end, I've not even had time to implement a message when walking close to the helicopter. And the roughness value is definitely too low, it has a shiny metallic aspect.

Is a very short game. Having info text not rendered in 3D space would have helped as most of the time the text was hidden by the character. Could blindly just walk around clicking things to progress without knowing what's going on. Character graphics and animation are solid.

GG !

The graphics and animations were really well done for such a short amount of time. Sound effects would have been nice in a game like this, but I understand the time constraints (especially when constructing complex 3D models and animations). Overall, solid work!

I like this level design and graphics (very good for so few time). Do you try to use theme in your game?

Maybe you could just add text about end game. And I don't know, maybe it's a bug: Elevator's panel in second floor I can broke, but first panel just open:

The game is really cool. But the rooms are so small and because that the camera are very close to the Frank. But everything else are good. Good luck :)

@nikchernyakov It's not a bug: firecrackers can be only used once, though the screwdriver can be used as many times as you want.

I wanted to use the theme more, but my final game has so few mechanics... The only link is that all this stuff happens because Frank got a lot of money ^^'
(the more money you have, the worse it gets)

Really nice game!
Miss the ending though. And maybe some music and/or sound effects.

The building could've been a bit bigger compared to Frank, I kept trying to zoom out...

I would have said that the text prompts maybe could ruin some puzzles since they only showed up if you have the right item, but there's only the one thing, so...

Neat idea, maybe you can do more in the future (if you want to). Like if you have a certain amount of time to try to block off entryways, then when the time is over you have to escape and more or less people are in the building while you're trying to escape. I dunno.

The idea and the graphics is really good. The camera angle is not the best, but it was okay. I would have hoped for some music or some sound effects. But overall a well made compo game. Well done.

Like the art, it's pretty well done. It could use some SFX/music, implementation of the theme, and a way to get on the helicopter though... anyway, good job.
