Blood Mage: Human Sacrifice by tdg_

[raw]
made by tdg_ for LD 44 (COMPO)

In order to play:

Drag cards over the player to sacrifice limbs (you start with all fingers, toes, hands, and feet) to gain essence. Sacrificing limbs does damage to your constitution (not your defense). If your constitution falls below zero, you die.

Left click on spells, right click on targets to use them.

End turn using the spacebar.

Use spells (which require essence) to defeat enemies.

Spells include:

Fireball - deals damage based on your destruction skill

Frost Bolt - deals damage based on your destruction skill and prevents movement for one turn

Siphon - steal additional body parts from your enemies

Bind - prevent your enemies from moving for one turn

Shield - raise your shield level by 20.

Shuffle - shuffle your remaining cards.

There is a basic leveling system that I wish could have been more fleshed out, but it at least exists. screen1.PNG

This game was made for the Compo edition of Ludum Dare 44 ("Your Life is Currency"). It was minimally game tested and is barely functioning - but it was my first LD, so I wanted to include it.

All art, code, and music was created by me. Or, in the case of music, it was chosen by me using sound effect generators such as BRFX, SFXR, and BeepBox.

Interesting concept, and the cards were actually quite well drawn! I feel like it'd be a really great battle system for a bigger turn-based strategy game project in the future.

@kevin-liu Thanks man! I appreciate it. There were a couple things that didn't break my way when in those last few hours that I think would have helped. Mainly, a more robust unlock system. I'm excited with how it turned out and will probably keep working on it in the future.

Cool game. Was a bit confused in the beginning with what each bar does (I thought the red bar was also full but its actually empty).
Loved the gameplay and would love to see more. Game has solid mechanics. The cards are brilliant but sometimes they really unfair. But if you add some persistence between fights so you can play it as a rouguelike then that's fine (i'd personally like that).
Also feel like I was missing some sort of an AOE spell.
Anyway, thanks for the fun.

It's nice for a first compo entry, and you have done pretty well something that most of all fail in the first jams: scope.

You scope was pretty perfect, because the idea is fully working and the core gameplay mechanics are in the right place.

Theme was also fitting, and that's another point to you advantage.

keep jamming, you'll improve yourself and become better!

@fanmanpro Definitely agree with a lot of points you made. Balancing and leveling up was something I had planned on doing. I was also planning on making a ladder style room system like FTL but just ran out of time.

Nice! I can see a lot of work went into this one! Lots of pixel art and it's pretty good! I liked the music at first but it started to wear on me, it would be good to mix it up more, or make it more ambient.

I figured out the basics of how to play right away, but not sure about advanced strategy. I'm a big fan of slay the spire and mtg but not sure how this translates.

Some thoughts.
- Just use left mouse button for everything. I'm pressing enter, space, right mouse, but there's no need!
- It would help if it showed what spells do when you mouse over them. Maybe even apply that to everything (enemies, bars, etc)
- Cool idea to put the text sideways but it's hard to read!

A great first entry, congrats!

Next time my advice is to simplify! Think about how the game would be better if it had less stuff that was just better balanced and polished. For example instead of 6 spells maybe have 3. Instead of an upgrade system maybe don't have that at all or simplify it and make it more interesting choice. Like choosing a new card for your deck.

The game is very big for the time at our disposal but you made it work ! THe controls are a bit hard to figure out at first. I didnt go very far because I was stuck after i lost all my mana, maybe an ingame HELP button would do the trick, but overall great work

I think the vertical text on the character vitals need to go. It would be interesting to be able to collect cards as you finish each battle to add to your deck. Of course, that's asking for alot in a 48 hour time frame, and what you've made is already quite a bit.

This is a hard kind of game to pull off in a short amount of time, you've done really well!

Interesting concept, I feel like the game has solid mechanics and is quite impressive for a compo game!
Maybe simplify a bit the scope next time to give you more time for polishing, but good job otherwise!
