Decked Out, a Dress Up Card Game by DrEvilBrain

[raw]
made by DrEvilBrain for LD 41 (JAM)

Become the fashion master! Believe in the heart of the cards to create the most fabulous outfits known to man/dog/cat-kind! Do you have what it takes to be DECKED OUT?

This was initially envisioned as a deckbuilding card game. However, turns out that deciding to write basically all the code in the last day wasn't too much of a bright idea. As comparison to what the game is now, here's a screenshot of the full UI.

Untitled.png

In this version of the game, you can't do a whole ton much. There are no deckbuilding elements (unless you look at the spaghetti code). You start off with all cards unlocked by default. There is no store to access and buy new cards. There is no money either. You were originally supposed to do these photoshoots every few turns. You would have to assemble an outfit according to the theme, getting money depending on how close you are to the theme. The eventual goal would be to collect all 60 articles of clothing and/or reach a turn limit. Every 5 turns you were also supposed to pay an increasing amount of money towards some debt. The idea was to never become bankrupt while also gathering clothes.

I will have to revisit this concept at some point. Hopefully my NEXT GEN graphics are sufficient enough to make some laughs.

And if you're curious, the song used was Lost in the city by TRG Banks. It felt really reminiscent of a dress up game's music to me.

This game wasn't horrific by any stretch! It actually amused me for some time coming up with different really dumb combinations.

Good bits:
It works; I didn't notice any serious bugs.
Good take on the theme - haven't seen this genre combination before. Interesting ideas in the game description. Plus I'm a sucker for card games.
Also I like the way you set up the mood with cartoonish drawing and music etc.

OK bits:
Charming programmer art.
Humor because I enjoy making silly character combinations.

Ideas for next time:
Don't rewrite all your code in the last day. Actually avoid rewriting all your code on ANY day.
Make simple sound effects.

I like the concept of this! I think it could get really interesting and be super varied - think the high fashion version for a style-type genre or a more like a thematic one as a fun-game.

Mood totally works as well, had a huge smile on my face the whole time.

It's super simple but it's not bad by any means! It's super cute, and god, it actually reminds me of a game I played when I was super young. Card games and fashion are not a unused combo, apparently? Now I want to find that old game... You did great, and made me remember my childhood! :)

It's a good concept, maybe playing against someone could work better. Like Texas Hold'em style, whoever dresses up first the guy wins.

By no means the work of Van Gogh, however it is amusing and funny to mix the cards and create strange looking combinations. The music was good and the game works pretty well. Good Job.

Coming soon to a fashion runway near you.

Cute graphics, and funny idea. It would have been cool to see the full thing, but honestly a dressup game is pretty fun even without "real" game mechanics.

It'd be cool to see this concept fleshed out more, a dress up deck building game seems like it'd be fun. Your art is basically exactly what it needs to be for this sort of thing, any art except this would have felt out of place heheh
