The Last Duel by dollarone

[raw]
made by dollarone for LD 44 (COMPO)

A great space fight has just ended, and all that's left is you...and one enemy ship. There's weapons and shield generators floating around in space - you can reel them in and install them on your ship if they get close enough! Mind you there is this one enemy ship... maybe take him down first?

The Last Duel is a card game set in space where you duel to the death. Each upgrade costs a life ("fusion core"), so you must measure up benefit vs cost. Whoever can blast away all the fusion cores in the other ship, wins the Last Duel.

Win by attacking with lasers and rockets and special weapons like the Giant Bomb and EMP. Lasers can be stopped by the shield, and rockets can be distracted by flares. There's no stopping the Giant Bomb, and the EMP will take out your shield (unless it is massively upgraded), opening up for a laser attack!

Controls: Mouse and R to restart.

Quite a nice card game! I encountered a case where I had one fusion core left and got a card +1 fusion core. Clicking that said "you don't have enough fusion cores". A bug or is this expected?

I like card games like these.

Great job. I wish that graphically it had more stuff, such as ships actually firing, but I know how compo is constrained, especially when you have to make an AI.

It did not take much away from the game.

One thing I really want to commend is that the game really feels balanced. Well done!

Hey folks, thanks for feedback! @hypp - sounds like a bug :/
@kaisean-games : I wanted to add animations and sound effects - maybe in a post-compo version!

I won  This was cool to play, I enjoy these types of games the most on LD. Excellent job on the music, it made me feel extra retro-y. Overall I enjoyed the mechanics, if you want to make a post-jam version for itch.io maybe, make a couple more cards and add some animations you'd be all set. I'd certainly play that.

A question about the rocket launchers: since they can be countered with flares, is - given the choice - building a laser always a better option?
