Clash of the Fungus by kfischer-okarin

made by kfischer-okarin for LD 38 (JAM)

A fighting game featuring mushrooms - no they cannot move ;)

Screenshot1.png

Use spores to plant poisonous mushrooms in the enemy territory while defending yourself from their spores and mushrooms with bullets.

| | | |---|---| |Gameplay.gif|Pay attention to the wind so that your spores actually reach the enemy soil. Fully grown violet mushrooms will continously deplete the enemy's hit point. Try to hit the spores of your enemy mid-air to prevent them from growing into mushrooms.| |Energy.gif|Both spores and bullets use up your Mushroom energy, which you can recharge with F (Player 2 uses i).|

Both single-player mode against an AI and two-player mode is supported. For two-player mode press Player 2's confirm button while in the Character selection

Default Controls:

Player 1:

|Control|Keyboard|Gamepad 1| |-------|--------|---------| |Aim:|A, D|D-Pad| |Confirm / Shoot Bullet:|V|Button 0| |Cancel / Shoot Spore:|B|Button 1| |Recharge Energy:|F|Button 3|

The two different mushrooms that are available are unfortunately completely identical except for their visuals.

I really love the "fighting game, but you cannot move" idea! But it's not very clear how to damage your opponent at the beginning. Really like the music.

Very unique concept! The mechanics' quite interesting. After figuring out the mechanics of killing spores with purple bullet, the game became a lot more engaging: should I charge up energy, shoot spores, or wait until the opponent shoot spores (so I can shoot it down). Also, the main menu showed 8 fighters, and I'm not sure how to unlock them?

It is a fun concept! I like mushroom themed games and defense shooters and a defense shooter-esque game themed as a fighting game is just fun! would love to see other characters with unique movesets! At first I as well did not really get what my moves were supposed to do as shooting did nothing to the opponent but once I figured it out it became pretty interesting! The wind at times was very unforgiving giving me little chance to attack but it was a fun time regardless, good job!

Audio is nice. Used a xBox360 controller and everything works fine. I couldn't test the multiplayer part though.

@wildmusketeer The character portraits are unfortunately just a images without a real character yet ;). In version 2.0 there will be different characters with unique movesets.

@kantieno Thank you! Yes different characters with unique movesets are definitely the next step. Also gotta think some more about the wind game mechanic to make one's success it maybe a little bit less random...

Very interesting idea, I like the 2 player support and all the unlockable mushrooms you can get. It was a bit confusing at first, but once I got the hang of it it was really fun to play. Graphics and audio were nice too. Great entry!

This is an original idea and I like a lot some details like the roster or the animations. Great job!

Pretty interesting! Took me a bit to figure out that the wind was really important. I do wonder how the fighting could be different between the different characters - perhaps the size of mushrooms or different effects. Definitely changes up the fighting conventions and adds a lot more anticipation. I think varying up how the defense is done would be really important since there's no movement. Good job!

I like the idea but I find the controls on the keyboard to be a bit unusual? :P
Graphics are awesome, and the music is fitting

Cheers!

@rombus I wanted both player to be able to play on one keyboard.... And I tried to arrange the keys in a rectangle of neighboring keys on the keyboard so it roughly resembles a gamepad :)

The idea is interesting, but the game is also a bit confusing to play. But both the music and graphics is really good. And this overall a very well made game.

Great idea to use the spores with the wind, but you have to improve it. The game is very simple, but I understand you about to increase the fungus family with different abilities, I encourage you, it will stay great and it will improve a lot. Good job

Oh, I'm in love with mushrooms. And one of my ideas for LD was very similar - shroom fighting game. Great job, I like it.

It's a orginal game. But the gameplay is not clear. You must add more feedback.

Took me a while to figure out the controls and understanding how to fight. I'd love to see more animations in the characters but I really like the idea and would definitely go on playing to unlock new rare mushrooms.

A Very interesting twist for a fighting/artillery game. Mushrooms look great, but the sound can be a little improved. Great job overall!)
