Skelly Zone by mattmirrorfish

made by mattmirrorfish for LD 39 (COMPO)

Skelly Zone is a third person tower defense-ish game made for Ludum Dare 39 by Matt Mirrorfish.

Collect skulls to build turrets, teleporters, cauldrons and barriers.

Shoot with left click. In keeping with the running out of power theme, the turrets have limited ammo and need to be manually refueled. Refuel turrets by right clicking to shoot skulls at them. Space toggles building mode.

Itch link fails.

It shows the game loading then gives that error where the game should be, the link is not a 404 though

Yeah the link fails for me too. I found it with a manual search on Itch.io though. This is the link https://mattmirrorfish.itch.io/skelly-zone
Next time, try clicking your links to make sure they work okay?

Game looks very good, music is nice too!

I'm not into tower defence myself, but it does what you expect from the genre.

My computer was sadly not up to the task. Even at very low settings, it failed to run smoothly (old quad core (I know)). I noticed very little change in fps between the settings.

High amount of polish for game made in such a short time! Good job!

Nice Matt, was surprised to see the camera blur when moving, nice touch.
Atmospheric, once I sussed out what to do i was baddie bashing quite happily :)

slightly darker on my old laptop, but still playable.

@estebe thanks for pushing through and searching, I was rushing to upload before running out to pick up my kids. Sorry to hear the game didn't run well, it's honestly very very badly optimized, I made some late attempts to tweak that but yeah, it probably won't run well at all on slower machines :(

@oboshape thanks for checking it out and letting me know about the bad link on Twitter! Really appreciate it.

Fun little shooter. For some reason the WebGL build was very slow, so I got the Windows build and while the motion blur was gone the performance was much better. I'm honestly not a fan of the tank controls, it makes the game awkward when aiming. I would suggest having the mouse aim and turn, and let the directional keys move and strafe (with gamepads you use the left and right analog sticks).

@gamepopper thanks for the feedback, yeah I agree the control scheme you describe probably would have been better. I considered switching to straight FPS style controls and might do that if I do a further iteration on this idea. The performance is generally pretty bad across the board, I did some things that are fairly terrible rendering wise lol, so I'm not surprised it's slow. Not sure if we're allowed to do optimization work post-jam.

The WebGL build was very slow and the motion blur was overly strong there. However interesting idea and good job for finishing. Up the brightness if you pursue the idea further however :)

One of my favorite entries so far.

HTML5 build ran badly, Windows build is much better.

At first I didn't know how to build, until I watched your video and tried again. The turrets were easy to use, but it wasn't clear how to best use other items or even what the cauldron, for example, did.

It took a few shots to kill the enemies, but they kill me in one hit? That was frustrating. They could have had some variety in attack or speed, the streams of them were kind of monotonous after a while.

Still, over all, great work!

Thanks for the feedback guys, generally performance is pretty challenged, there's a lot I can do to optimize but I wasn't able to do it during the jam.

Excellent graphics and a solid gameplay concept that was well-executed. Controls were a little tough to get the hang of, and I could have used in-game tooltips for what the tools did, but the gameplay worked pretty well on its own. The skull collecting mechanic was nice (I didn't realize for a while that the skulls from the skeletons could ALSO be picked up!) and it sounded great when you picked a bunch up at once. The colors and lighting were all quite nice as well.

It looks like a very good-looking and complete games. The music is funny too. However it seems to be very demanding on computer performance. It was very slow on my laptop (both the WebGL version and the Windows version) so I could not really enjoy it. It is also very dark to see things in the game.

Hi Matt, its nice to see you partaking in the Ludum Dare! The motion blur shader you use was pretty awesome. Music was cool, and very atmospheric. controls took some getting used to. I also take it you had some lighting effects going on too did you. You should continue to develop it after the judging is done. I for one would like to see what else you could do with it.

Nice aesthetic. It looks like a great game from the get go.

Unfortunately, the motion blur and controls made moving a bit frustrating at first. If I turned too fast, I couldn't see anything and I couldn't nicely control my turn rate since I couldn't use my mouse. Also, the level was a bit dark so it was hard to get my bearings.

But after I figured out the controls, I was able to have some fun blasting away enemies. So I guess it worked out. And the art is quite fun; the music fits well with the world and the models/particles feels consistent with the theme of the game. Good job on this.

Like the gameplay and the looks of the game, it gives a nice dark mood. But it might be a bit too dark though, it's a little hard to see what happens in the edge of the level. As others have mentioned the motion blur is a little hard on my machine, which makes the game lag quite a bit when enemies are chasing you.

Other than that I had fun, good work

The tank controls made the game a little clunky at times. The music and lighting made for some good atmosphere. Overall a good game.

This was a fun little tower defense game. I was a little confused on what each thing did and ended up just falling back on using the turrets.

Only problem I had was a huge fps hit whenever I looked back towards the base area (I was playing through the browser).

Love the art style and the simple little sounds. Great entry!
