Roguespector by Yanek

[raw]
made by Yanek for LD 41 (COMPO)

Roguespector is an endless turn-based shoot'em up, with rogue inspired controls. Each move triggers a new turn, and each turn, no matter what you do, your ship is going to fire his weapons in front of him.

You score by killing enemies (red ships) and staying alive. And you stay alive by avoiding bullets, asteroids and crazy AI rushing to collide with your ship. Oh... and if you kill a friendly ship (green ones), you lose health too.

Pro Tip: Your damage/defense vary depending on the row your ship is on. Use it at your advantage to deal more or less damage, or to survive unavoidable shots.

This is such a great idea! It constantly puts you in tough situations and that is really fun. Good job!

I really liked the game! It was a lot of fun thinking about what to do each turn and then seeing your plans work out! I sadly hit a few bugs during the game, because of which I needed to reload the page (i.e. hitting restart just caused me to lose the game with 0 score).
A really nice experience though, I liked the graphics and the sound seemed to fit the graphics quite nice. :) Great work!

This was really fun! Fantastic art and audio (I wish I had your pixel art skills).

High difficulty though (my best was 3140 / turn 54); the main challenge was avoiding collisions, which sometimes felt impossible or unpredictable - I would have liked to see slightly lower object density and some way to tell where the other ships were going to move next turn.

Overall this is a really good entry. I liked the positional attack/defence bonuses for an extra layer of strategy. The HP/damage values were well chosen too.

Really liked it! nice controls and polish, only thing, in the webgl version the game screen is too long on standard zoom, this is just a little thing but can be annoying ;)

Thank you all for your feedback. I know there is some issues, sometimes, when you want to play again after a game over, but I wasn't able to figure out the reasons in time for the deadline. Maybe I'll check in later if it's fine to post a bugfix update.

@Cheesey Bob That's a pretty good score, I don't think I ever got that far while testing the game in its final state.

I enjoyed the artwork and audio! I would have liked a bit more of a difficulty curve / balancing. It's difficult to get a good run going.

This was an innovative concept. Sometimes was annoying though! Once you mistime it it was difficult to get back in rhythm. But with a bit of balancing would be a nice game.

The graphics are excellent! The gameplay doesn't feel very balanced, though

You did a great job implementing this! I think the graphics and gameplay are great. Probably the only complaint is that the sound and music are a little weak.

Takes a long time to kill mobs or maybe I'm just playing it wrong. Directions seemed pretty straightfoward though!

Really fun idea. I liked it so much. Having enemies movement patern (like in classic shmup) could improve it a lot. A very good entry. :)

Great idea indeed. Not too hard, not too simple, game is well-balanced. Love the graphical effects, good job on them as well. Nice entry overall!

Great little game, i found it a little tough to begin with but once i understood the language of when enemies were going to attack me i found things much easier to predict and strategize against. Great game, i could see myself putting lots of time into something like this on mobile.

I couldn't exactly work out if the enemies had a movement pattern & i occassionally saw them overstep rocks which felt a little confusing at times but having very transparent / predictable movement patterns with diversity between enemies would definitely help the longevity if you took the game further!

Great work and an excellent take on the theme! :-)
