PILLING DEBT

Ludum Dare 44 - Your Life is Currency. A strategic runner. The player has a total of 10 pills, and needs to predict how many they'll use for each stage. The game is about a salaryman running to not lose his job, having to take anti-stress pills to avoid cardiac arrest. His name is Bill.

CONTROLS AND SYSTEM

Screenshot_2.png

Jump (SPACE)

The character can perform a short jump or a long jump, depending on the time at which the button is released. The character can also double jump at no cost. After the third jump and onwards, each jump costs 50 Stress.

Scream (Z)

The character screams, scaring any thieves in a small radius. Scared thieves don't rob your pills. This action costs 25 Stress.

Pills

Before each stage, the player must choose how many pills they're going to take. Select the amount with the slider and press the circle at the center to confirm. Once confirmed, Bill ingests all the pills at once - the player does not need to take them during the stage. Each Pill is worth 100 Stress. Stress accumulates throughout the stage, and the player must reach its end goal before reaching its maximum value. Bill begins with 10 Pills. Thieves can steal Pills from Bill.

Slide the slider at the lower-half part of the screen. When you're done, press the circle at the center.

The game was really fun, and the graphics and music were very nice as well!

Once I figured out how to play and why I was dying, it was pretty good. Could use some better in game explanation. Having to choose how many pills to use per level was an interesting challenge. Good game!

Nice work, took a minute to figure out the flow of the game, but once I got it I found it pretty fun! The bandit noise was funny

Hi @maggardjosh!
Lots of players had trouble with the pill-gambling mechanic, and we're working on it to make it better explained!
Thank you for playing our game ^^

Couldn't make it past the second level but it was pretty satisfying to land all the jumps when I did. Whoo boy it's a tough one

Nice. It took me a while to get used to the flow, but it's really fun once you get it. Maybe consider changing the color on a few of the hazards. They are really similar in color to the background which makes them too hard to see when moving at high speeds.

@hwaet yeah, the game pace is indeed really fast and confusing for the first couple of times when playing it, but once you figure out the strategy it becomes a lot easier! About the color scheme, some of the props really do blend into the background and we're trying to find a better color palette for they, so it becomes a little bit more user friendly on a later version! Thanks for your feedback and for playing our game!

Was it intentional to let the user jump in the air? I can jump out of the screen but I get stress with each jump

Took a while for me to figure things out. I think it would have felt better if the jump was less floaty. Was a bit hard to time the jumps. Still a playable game. Good work!

Nice entry. The physics is a bit too floaty to my taste and a summary on the gameover screen would have been a nice addition as well. I ran into a couple of issues with the WebGL version (UI elements placement in fullscreen, for example), but nothing major. Congrats!

At first I was very disappointed by the jump physics. But after playing some more I sort of understood why you chose to do the jump like that.
This game was hard, and I wanted to quit several times. But persevered and beat it. Well, I am a lowly accountant now, but still alive!

@waylon531 the jumps were intentional, the more you jump, more stress you get! But I guess we went a little overboard with it, and we'll do some fixing on it! Thanks for your feedback!

@harark timing the jumps is a very strategic part of the game! We'll fix some bugs to make it look less like the character is flying! Thanks for playing ^^

@iarwain, @tangiblegames, hi!

Our team is working on fixing the issues with the Web version and with the physics mechanic, that is mostly intentional but got out of thw way and, as many players stated, started to feel weird. The executable files seem to work better than the web version, too.

With some more time, we'll try to make the game more playable, user-friendly and fun! This was our first entry, and we, as a begginer development team, are very glad with the repercurssion we had! Thanks for playing and for your feedback, you're helping to make this game a lot better!

First of all, thanks for all the feedback, everyone.

We're working on a less "floaty" jump and making some adjustments to the Pills screen (I don't know what was I thinking when I wrote "Current" instead of "Remaining"). Additionally, we might add a sliding mechanic to the game, which was originally cut due to me getting ill. We'll see what the future holds.
