CompoVersion

PostjamVersion

  • local Multiplayer
  • 2 new tracks
  • race and sandbox Modes
  • more music

Note: Postjam currently only supports Windows Downloadable, because of shenanigans with unitys input system I had to use XInputPureDotNet to have reliable Gamepadsupport for multiple players. If anyone has any tips for me to look into how to get multicontroller support onto Linux/Mac - please share.

Very fun. Loved the madness. Reminded of the PS2 game Burnout. I liked how the world turns slowly into a mush or cars and blocks over time. A take-down mechanic would be kind of fun. (Like a sideswipe or something)

Good work overall!

Ty man, giving more power to the player would be a great idea.
I'll figure something out for a post-Compo version.

teh game is chaotic and really fun, and the car physic is good. The only real complain I have is that the music loop is too short.

Played it last night for a few minutes. I love the feeling the car gives me while in the air however I only played for 12 laps. Is there an end in sight?

After 12th lap I wanted to go to the map's edge but I have a feeling that at one point I was driving against an invisible wall.

Controls are really cute and well done! Jumping off the ramp has a great feeling!

There is no real point to the game but to see the destruction - so there's no limit to how many laps you can do.

There shouldnt be any invisible walls, you should just fall of the edge of the map at some point (but the map is pretty, pretty large)

Thanks for the nice comments :)

The graphics are nice and is fun to crash into things, but keeping track of who is first and having a lap limit would have made it more like a game instead of a crash simulator :)

Very true. Speaking of: tracking the players placement seems tricky to me. Right now I compute the placement everytime the player reaches a checkpoint and compare it to how many cars have passed that checkpoint before in the current lap - but that's not optimal for obvious reasons.

It works surprisingly smooth in the browser. Fun and could easily be expanded into a real game.

This is a suprisingly fun game :) Simple but fun. My suggestions for future updates would be:
-WAY LESS LAPS than 200 ;)
-a few different maps
-some more or less unusual powerups
-a lot of cars just like in this version
-maybe a split screen multiplayer (it's not hard to do in Unity) (also with a lot of AI cars) (it would be quite fun imo, especially with those powerups I mentioned before)

Dude, @RahmKota3 you're speaking my language! Almost all the things you mentioned are on my todo-list. Nexttime I sit down to program, this thing is going to get local multiplayer. Also there's no limit to laps yet - it's still kinda pointless, sorry!

Was more fun that I thought to see hundreds of cars flailing about the track.
Loved the acapella engine sounds!
Gameplay-wise it's a bit lacking, as in there is no win or lose condition, but fun nonetheless (and fits the theme too!)

Game was silly and fun, only real complaints are that there isn't a lap limit aswell as the fact that you can just bypass whole sections of the map and still be in first without concequences just by driving on the grass.

The music could have been a bit happier because the rest of the game is so funny! The sounds are cool, the visual style is really nice, and it is a lot of fun to drive into everybody and see the cars fly around.

The only complaint I have is that I would have wanted to be able to choose more cars (I don't know if my computer then would blow up?) for maximum chaos! It this case, it is "The more you have, the better it is" ;)

This is so funny for some reason - watching all these cars tumble around. You probably know the laps and placement is broken (I went from 1/X to 22/X on crossing a lap line) but yeah - serious racing isn't the point of the game hahah. Good work!

06. Dec 2017 · 13:12 UTC
After I drove a few laps I noticed that the whole town looked like after a bombing attack and I saw in the corners of some collapsed buildings that some cars are stucked. I helped them so that they could find their way back to the road. Then I decited to do the opposite and I tried to push some building parts on the road ... but they were too many cars. Was a lot of fun. xD
And yeah, it would be great as couch co-op. Because than you would have a real opponent and you both would try to reach the goal or lap count. Do it dude and we see us on the road. :D

Haha, thanks guys! I love that you're enjoying the game!

I'll up a postjam version around the end of the week.

Currently I've updated the lap and placement counters to work accurately also helped the AI out when they're stuck on buildings and added little bit of toggleable UI to the game.

Expect Multiplayer, adjustable lap-count and a less mindnumbing soundtrack by sunday.

Pretty fun. It does end up as quite a mess after a couple laps though, and you always have that one pole or tree that spins you around and leaves you way behind. Really not a bad entry though, and I would love to see multiplayer on this.

Really simple and very well made. Well it wasn't that simple to play. But I managed to stay 1/xx for many laps using that default 200 cars setting. I don't know if there was an end, but I feel like 10 laps was enough for me and I would have enjoyed getting some award for that from the game. The way all the cars were just wrecking everything was very good and it increased the driving challenge in a nice way. I didn't much use the indicator of where to go, and I think it could have been omitted without any negative effects. The music/sound was a bit repetitive. Oh and it would have been nice with more violent feedback (music/effects/camera) when wrecking things.

Well made game!

Fun little racer with quite some chaos going on, the more cars you put, the worse it definitively gets for the city :p

the graphics while simple were really good, everything feels cohesive together which is the most important, the camera was well handled in the fact that you don't get too disoriented as long as you dont flip everywhere after crashing randomly into some cars or building.

Quite frankly the physics are awesome and fun, the car sounds are hillarious, and the driving of the car felt right, not too heavy, not too drifty. As i said before this really made me think of the big car chase in the Blues Brothers movie for all the mayhem happening in the city :p, and speed wise it really feels a bit like an f zero title.

if you keep the sandbox mode, and add in a racing, chase, either delivery (akin to games like crazy taxy) or demolition derby mode, vary by having different colored cars, maybe different models (not necesserally complex ones keep this aestetic) also for the player car so people can choose, add in multiplayer, and you have quite a game you can build.

In this state it is still a very solid entry nontheless, especially considering this was done in compo.

well done man :)

Fun game! I really like the idea, and the car surprisingly felt very good to drive. Unfortunately I was only able to do the WebGL one because there was no Mac build. Only things I could say as far as improving it would be more polish, more gamemodes, and less annoying music. Overall very cool!

The more you have, the worse your framerate! Couldn't play with 200 unforuntatley. The car controlled really well, just slightly strange physics when you crash. Liked the way you did the buildings and bridges as destructable and like "cardboard box" style.

Omgoodness this is awesome. Your game title COMPLETELY fits the actual gameplay. The game is such a joy to play and I was laughing most of the time wondering WTF the AI cars were doing. Some were just driving in circles, others were just literally standing on their front bumper like a statue. Did you code in a bunch of randomness?! The closest thing I've seen to this are the chaos levels in Road Redemption such as https://youtu.be/KZ-DDxcgLHA?t=495. Good job man!

10. Dec 2017 · 08:09 UTC
@honest-dan dude thanks so much for checking the game out again, even despite your rightful fear of 3D-games frying your laptop.

@peachtreeoath the AI driving is actually derived from the player-class, it's just generating inputs instead of reading them from a gamepad for example. Honestly it's super basic, but ofcourse they drive without care for their own health, get constantly smashed and I never taught them anything but GIVE MAXIMUM GAS AT ALL TIME. :D

I'm gonna release the postjam version today, so look forward too:

Local Multiplayer (up to 4 players - uses XInput), new Music, a couple new tracks, new UI, new options, revamped placement system, an actual race mode as well as the ol' sandbox and maybe even a third mode - but I doubt I'll get it done today.

Ah ha I gotcha. We implemented skateboarders in our own game and I really wanted to reuse the player controls which were vehicle controls. Unfortunately the ended up with the AI skaters running into walls most of the time so we had to stick with reusing the walking AI from the other enemies =/

- the loop point in the car engine audio clip is pretty noticeable on the main menu (I did really enjoy all the pitch-shifted "vroom-vroom" sfx when you're passing the AI in-game though)
- the car selection on the main menu started out at 36 on the slider, but the text next to it said 200 until I actually moved it
- out of curiousity, I tried driving off the map and found there was nothing stopping me but a relatively long + boring drive; I'd recommend putting in something to prevent the player from just driving away
- Given that nothing happens when you reach lap 3 and that the AI isn't particularly challenging to pass, it probably would have been better to just ditch the lap/position indicators and keep the focus on causing chaos in sandbox mode

Overall, a pretty great entry!

There's definitely a lot of carnage and it matches the theme really well.

I was gonna mention the lack an actual race mode, but you've covered that in the postjam version, shame you didn't make it in time for the jam. My mine problem, however, is the camera.
I wish it was further away from the car and moved way less as I found it very disorienting. Are we gonna get a car battle-royal later on with cars falling out of a plane and all that jazz?

Great work on the extra tracks and multiplayer mode. Thanks for letting me know they're arrived. I love how insane this game is! On the next iteration, it would be nice to see what position others are in the race. With so much going on it becomes hard to know who you're really racing against.

@gwolf86 actually a system like this is already implemented, but turned off, because it costs some performance and I didnt knew if there would be enough benefit to it. But I'll have another look at it maybe I can cut some corners (had it set up in a way where relevant AIs had their nameplate shown and rendering text isnt exactly cheap)

@gimmebeta the current postjam version relies on a XInput library. So chances are if you are using other controller than the standard xbox360 controller for windows it won't work. But there's help: https://www.x360ce.com/

Finally been able to try the post jam version, and it's pretty neat the game is still really fun, and the racing mode gave it a bit more incentive to play :)

I see it's already been pointed out but the only thing i'd say was also that seeing the position of racers ahead of you would be cool, cause it does get pretty chaotic when you race with a lot of cars, hope you can find a way to implement it without the performence issue you mentioned ^^

### What I liked more :
* The controls are good ! Until you bump into something : there grab the steering wheel and pray
* It was funny to see the chaos when putting maximum of vehicles!
* Funny game to play overall !

### How to improve :
* I know it's not easy but try to find a concept that is more innovative with the theme
* Maybe put the checkpoints more visible (by adding color and sound)
